Your niece is trapped in her dreams and you volunteer to save her. You enter her dreamworld and have to figure out her fears and how to overcome them. The dream version of your niece is a scary, red-eyed wraith spouting threats. This scariness is offset by your sweet, teddy bear helper named Barry.
This game is billed as a CE, but there are no achievements, no collectibles, and no morphing objects to find. A CE version of a game must have these features to be a true CE in my opinion. Extra gameplay alone does not make it. Devs need to wake up and realize this.
That being said, I enjoyed the graphics and artwork. The VOs are well done and the dialogue is pretty realistic with touches of humor. The HOSs are straightforward and nicely drawn. Puzzles are of medium difficulty. There is a map that lets you jump from scene to scene without any backtracking. The hint system works pretty well.
Personally, I will wait for the SE version before I buy this game. The lack of true extras makes it a no go for the extra cost of a CE, but I liked the storyline and artwork enought to buy the game as an SE. Recommended as an SE.
This game picks up where the previous Mayan Prophecies ended. You and your two friends escape the doomed ship just to be marooned on a Mayan island. You need to return an artifact in order to save the Mayan people and the island from an impending volcanic explosion. Pretty standard stuff.
The graphics are okay. The color palette is a little pastel-y and has a faded quality. Interesting choice from the devs. There are morphing objects to find and hummingbirds to collect. Achievements are also included in the game. The HOSs are pretty clear and if you like you can change to a Mahjong game instead. There is a journal and a map which lets you jump from one scene to another without backtracking through the scenes. The cutscenes and VOs are just okay---the acting seems stiff.
This is an okay game. Nothing too exciting but pretty well done. Try it and see what you think. If I buy it, it will be the SE with a free coupon.
This is the fifth Midnight Mysteries game in the series and it does not disappoint. You are a successful novelist to whom ghosts appear asking for your help. This time the ghost asking for your help is none other than Abraham Lincoln. He wants you to find the treasure of a secret society determined to undermine the US and stop their nefarious plans. You get to travel back in time, solve puzzles, and find the treasure! Fun!
The VOs are well acted and help move the game along. The graphics retain the same level of quality as the previous games. There are plenty of achievements to earn and collectibles to find. The hidden clovers are back in this game and can be very tricky to find. One change is that there is a clover icon that lets you know if you still haven't found all the clovers in a scene. This feature makes it easy to keep track of your progress. And be aware---the clovers can be found in HOSs! I also like the fact that you have to earn your hints by finding hidden ravens throughout the game. More of a challenge! There is a journal with a map to record clues and information. The map tells you where actions are waiting to be completed, but does not let you jump to that location with a simple click. You still have to travel through the scenes. The HOSs are interactive and fun and they can be a little more challenging than the standard HOSs. I like that.
One of the extras I always enjoy about the MM series is the historical research the devs incorporate into the game. The Civil War setting and historical data are engrossing and informative. I don't often learn while gaming, but I do with the MM series. And I have fun doing it! Good game!
The first Enigmatis game, Maple Creek, was also excellent and scary. This game ups the scare factor quite a bit. Not for the younger crowd or the timid.
You are driving in the woods when you come upon a damaged camper. You stop to investigate and help. You find a frightened girl and just when you promise her everything will be okay, a mystical, evil raven attacks. When you awaken, all evidence is gone and you seek help in a park called Ravenwood. Now things really get interesting! Creepy people, a suspicious prisoner in a dungeon, catacombs with corpses in barrels, and a crazy lady collecting items and "watching." Talk about an adventure!
This CE has all the extras I expect in a CE. There are illusive/morphing objects and different collectibles to find. There are tons of achievements to earn. The puzzles are of medium difficulty and enjoyable. The HOs are interactive and there are different types: silhouette, fragmented, etc. There is a journal and a map to help you on your way.
The graphics, voice overs, and cutscenes are wonderful! Scenes are not static at all. There are birds, leaves, butterflies, and animals moving throughout the scenes. Really makes for a great gaming experience. This game really looks like the devs went all out.
The game also continues the Evidence Board feature that was introduced in the first game. I really like this feature. Makes you think and helps you solve the game. And this time the EB interacts with the suspicious prisoner! Really nice touch.
This game is topnotch in every respect. Well done!
It should have been a tremendous achievement, but the tunnel through the Ridge of Leviathan became the site of a great disaster. What really happened that day?
A train goes missing on its debut journey never to be heard from again. And your family is among the passengers! Now a strange scientist wants your help in finding the train and solving the mysterious event. Game on!
The artwork and graphics are absolutely topnotch. Cut scenes tell the story beautifully and concisely and give you hints about the mystery of the vanished train. And you can replay the cut scenes anytime you want! This is a big plus for me. The music is a treat. It is much more like the score of a movie than game background noise. There are flowers to collect and tons of achievements to earn. These are essentials in a CE game in my opinion. The map works well. The hint button may be a little too direct for my taste, but you certainly will get the answer about what to do next if you do get stuck. I simply can't find anything negative about this game based on the demo. Worth every penny of a CE price.
Buy, buy, buy and enjoy yourself! It's just terrific.
The game starts out with the death of your police officer father. When you receive his amulet, you are transported back in time to before his death. A chance to change fate! But will the cursed ruby thwart your efforts?!
The graphics are very good. Clean, crisp, and artistic. The VOs and cut scenes do not disappoint. The HOSs are mildly interactive and the puzzles of medium to hard difficulty. The music is fine---not too overwhelming. There is a journal to help you keep track of your progress and to record hints. The map lets you jump quickly from one scene to another and there is a task list to keep you focused.
Now for the "However." However, this is a CE that has no collectibles, morphing objects, or achievements. These are the perks that make a CE a CE in my opinion. The extra game play, which is included, is never enough to warrant the extra money without collectibles, morphing objects, or achievements. Thus four stars and not five.
I will definitely buy the SE when it arrives, but see no reason to pay twice as much for the CE without the perks.
You are in historical Venice and have to rescue a boy kidnapped from a local orphanage. The mysterious deaths you need to unravel are the death of his parents.
I enjoyed the Venice locale very much. Nice atmosphere. The puzzles are pretty standard and of medium difficulty. My problem with this game is with the HOSs. In the "list of items to find" HOS, when you find an item it gets crossed off the list for a second and then it remains on the list. The item's color and appearance stay the same. Unless you are really paying attention and memorize the items you have already found, you can't tell what items still need to be found. I don't like this at all. In the "find 15 like items" HOS, the graphics are so blurry and undefined I couldn't tell what was what. I just randomly clicked hoping to hit on one of the items. This is when I stopped playing the game. I love the challenge of hunting for items in an HOS, but I really need to be able to tell what I'm looking at on the screen.
This game had promise. I am sorry it was so disappointing.
Another game from Eipix---their staff must work lots of overtime. This is a lighthearted and fun take on the pirate genre. Nasty Barons, wives with murky pasts, little boy hostages, treasure to find, the beautiful Caribbean, and pirates! What more could you want from an adventure?
This is a CE that has all the bells and whistles I expect from a CE. Tons of achievements to earn. Hidden papers to find in each scene. The artwork and graphics are topnotch. The HOSs each have a close-up silhouette HOS hidden within. The HOSs are also interactive which I like; they are more than simple lists of items to find. And if you don't care for HOSs you can play Match-3 games. Different levels of difficulty available. Some inventory items have to be combined with other inventory items in order to use them. I like this feature. Makes for more interesting game play. The puzzles are of medium difficulty. The music is very "pirate" appropriate. The cut scenes and VOs are also very good. The dialogue has a nice sense of humor to it that just increases the fun. The pirates are really rather sweet and made me smile.
The devs have struck just the right note with this game: humor, fun, and adventure. What a great game!
I recommend this game!

Sable Maze: Norwich Caves Collector's Edition
Your students have gone missing during an expedition under the university. Can you track them down before the water rises?
The first Sable Maze was a 5-star game. Really wonderful. The demo of this sequel does not measure up to the first game in the series, but it is still good.
The ancient evil Master of Water has taken over mild Professor Buildson and four of his best students. They are trapped in a maze beneath the university and you have to rescue them. I like the university setting, but the artwork is not as well done as Sable Maze: Sullivan River.
There are achievements to earn throughout the game. The music is nice and not overly loud. The HOSs are all very interactive. Each object you find is used to find another object in the list. I found some of these quite challenging to figure out since I don't like using hints. Puzzles are of medium difficulty. There is a map and an objectives button to keep you on track.
This is an enjoyable game, but I think I'll wait and buy the SE version when it comes out.

This game is from Eipix, the devs who brought us the Final Cut series and Off the Record: Linden Shades. That being said, you know the quality is going to be high. Yet, I am strangely ambivalent about this game.
Eipix games each have different artistic styles, which gives them high marks for creativity in my book. However, I think it is the artwork in this game that basically doesn't work for me. It is flat and "boxy" appearing. Lots of straight lines. Reminds me of the Drawn games---games I don't really like.
The storyline is fine. I love new takes on old standards and this twist on Hansel and Gretel is good. There are plenty of achievements to earn and 40 cupcakes to find throughout the game. The HOSs are interactive, but again, not very interesting to look at due to the artwork. The opening VO with the rhyming is good and clever, and all the VOs are well done. The music is also good and appropriate to the story.
If it were possible, I would give this game a 3 1/2 star rating due to the overall quality, but since it is not, I went with the three star rating. I recommend this game with reservations. I really think this is one game you have to try for yourself since my objections are purely based on artistic merits. Thank goodness for the one hour free trial!
