This game started out fun, but by the end I was just playing to get it over with. In fact, I got so sick of it, I nearly quit before the end. Unfortunately, the ending seemed to have nothing to do with everything I thought I was trying to do in order to save the little girl.
It was too long and had too many HOS and puzzles. The HOS were dark junk piles with many objects very difficult to see. Mind you, I like HOS, but there were way too many, and way too many repeat HOS. Some of the instructions for puzzles were as enigmatic as the puzzles. The skip and hint buttons took too long to refill. The music was monotonous. There's too much wandering around with no map. There was very little continuity between chapters. Maybe if there had been more continuity between chapters, the game wouldn't have seemed so long. But at least you definitely get your money's worth, or in my case, game credit's worth.
I played all but 11 minutes of the demo before deciding I really could not take any more.
There was way too much that didn't add to the game -- unrolling scrolls, visions, flashes and cut scenes -- and none of that made any sense.
The story line was confusing. I couldn't figure out where to go, when to go there, or why. Thankfully, the hint button works outside of the HOS and refills quickly, but where's the fun when you have to continually get a hint again and again and again?
The artwork is really beautiful, and the story is intriguing, but there seem to be more puzzles than HOS. That's a problem for me, because I like HOS and don't like puzzles. Also, toward the end of the demo, I found myself feeling a little bored, probably because so far the only living person is the girl Carmen, who has appeared only very briefly.
I'd still recommend it for those who would rather have more puzzles and less dialogue. The game play is very smooth, hint and skip button fill quickly on the easiest level, the HOS have some interactive objects, and the artwork is really nice to look at.
If I could think of one negative thing to say about this game, I'm not sure what it might be. The graphics were incredible. Game play was smooth as silk. I would have preferred being able to replace an object by left clicking instead of having to set it down in its place, but that isn't much of a complaint! If you're an intermediate or advanced player, you might want to select one of the more difficult levels of play, but I found it challenging enough playing the easiest level. Big Fish has reach a new high with this one that will be difficult to match.
I bought this game about a year ago and have just finished playing it for the second time. I think it's really a lot better than the first House of 1000 Doors in both the story and game play. There is a good balance between the number of puzzles and HOS. I love the beautiful graphics and well done voiceovers. The interactive map tells you where there is something to do and transports you to that location, and there are a lot of locations and some backtracking, so the map is really helpful. I think the game might be really cumbersome without it.
The only criticism I have is the abrupt ending as is usual in SEs, and the length. I think it's about one chapter, or location, too long. I had kind of forgotten what I was looking for, and especially why I needed to find it. So for those reasons, I'm only giving it four stars.
ARRRGGGHHHH..... more pictures to match in HOS! Is this the new wave of hidden object games... silhouettes and pictures? If it is, I guess I'll have to find something else to do before bed. Luckily, I have plenty of books to read.
Well, rats!! I was really enjoying this game and was ready to keep it on my "to buy" list. Then I got to an HOS that had silhouettes! Sorry ERS. I can read. Words work just fine for me, matching silhouettes to pictures is something I haven't done since first grade. I won't be buying this game. Do I recommend it? Yes, if you like to play baby games. I do not.
I recommend this game!

Escape the Emerald Star
You awake to find your cruise ship abandoned and in disarray. Can you track down all the fragments of a map and escape the ship?
Some of the best hidden object artwork around, I have to admit. Many folks will enjoy finding objects, playing the puzzle games, and accumulating points. I found it tedious and boring, but maybe that's just the mood I'm in. Don't take this game for granted, though. Some of the objects aren't as easy to find as you'd think!
Not too hard, not too easy, but just right! Really, I can't think of anything bad to say about this game except the map could have been interactive. Even so, once I learned my way around, trekking didn't feel like a problem, probably because of the gorgeous scenery! Occasionally I had to stop playing just to enjoy the beauty of the scene. The music was soothing and unobtrusive and fit perfectly as a background to the story.
There are a lot of characters here, which adds to the enjoyment of any game for me. With all the different voicing and acting that would've been necessary, I think not having voiceovers is probably a good thing.
