This game hearkens back to the excellence of earlier Elephant games, so why am I giving it only three stars?
Because I am so over games where you find needed objects in ludicrous places where they would never be found in real life unless someone had deliberately put them there -- using the hammer that you found in the dustbin to smash a vase to get the heel of the shoe that matches a footprint, etc. etc. etc. Unfortunately, there is an abundance of that kind of thing in this game.
Other than that, the story hook is intriguing, and I think you will want to find out more.
There's an old saying that you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. In this case, putting the Ravenhearst name on a game doesn't mean it's any good.
Puzzles lurking inside hidden object scenes, hidden objects lurking in puzzles, and it t wasn't even a very well-developed story. I wasn't having a fun time, so I quit.
Another reviewer has summed up my exact thoughts about this game. "Please try the demo, some may be able to get past unnecessary busy-work and totally illogical placement of items. I could have given a higher mark for "challenge", but only because of illogic. The last thing your brother says to you on your cell phone is "call the theatre for the address." Your cell phone vanishes and you have to repair a payphone to make the call. Luckily the payphone still had a PHONEBOOK?! Some reading this may not even know of payphones or phonebooks. I'm not sure about a trained detective who's lockbox key and part of her safe combination ends up in a public mailbox."
... to explain the reviews positively gushing over this game. I found the story to be silly, the neon colors garish, and the acting wooden. I couldn't muster even an ounce of sympathy or desire to save the kingdom from whatever it was that it needed to be saved from. It's a wonder to me that they didn't all die from neon poisoning.
I was having a pretty good time following the story, playing hidden object scenes, and skipping puzzles, because I always skip the puzzles in these games. I don't like puzzles, I'm not good at them, and so I just skip them and go on my merry way. But in this game, there is a concentric ring puzzle where you turn the rings to find animal shapes emerging from the lines and squiggles. You can not skip this puzzle!! I did find three of them, but I could not figure out the remaining three. I worked on it for probably 30 minutes or longer, turning the rings around to no avail, so I gave up. Had I been able to solve it and finish the game, I would probably have given it four stars, but this will forever be the game I couldn't finish and wasted a credit on.
While there are some objects to find, they are often things to be used in working out a puzzle, or else you have to work through a puzzle in order to find the objects. I dislike puzzles and want to skip them all. Unfortunately, more often than not that isn't possible in this game. On the positive side -- the graphics are good, the story is intriguing, and the acting isn't awful. As always, try to before you buy.
