The link to the previous Chimeras games is tenuous at best, but taken on its own merits this is a solid game. I've only played the SE, so can't comment on any CE bells and whistles.
The story is entertaining - a mixture of Groundhog Day and thwarted bridegroom. I can't honestly say the Scottish setting added much to the story, apart from some bagpipe and thistle theming, but it all looked very pretty.
A nice point was finding a pair of scissors which you got to keep and use several times. As most veteran HoGers will be aware, all too often that useful knife only gets used once cut a rope, vanishes and then one move later, you need something else ... so frustrating. Anyway, the scissors were much appreciated!
Characters were a little thin and the game isn't overly long (I cantered through on easy level in under 3 hours) but is enjoyable. Give it a try, it has very little wrong with it and rather a lot right.
Not Surface as I remember it, but a very good (nearly five star) game

While this has virtually nothing in common with the others in the Surface series, it is still an extremely good game.
I'll admit to a slight feeling of worry (I'm not a huge fan of cuteness) when I saw that it was fairy tale based, but I needn't have been concerned. Yes, fairy tales are the theme, but they're done well and while (mercifully!) not as dark as the originals, don't go overboard on the sweetness either. I liked the way the fairy tale characters behaved in the real world.
Graphics and sound were both very good. I enjoyed the music - atmospheric, but not intrusive. It was not the most challenging of games, but it was very enjoyable with smooth movement and largely sensible solutions to problems. Nothing very new perhaps, but done well. The storyline made sense (given that we're talking about a HO game here and it's not going to be War and Peace) and it was easy to understand why everyone was doing what they were doing.
Why not 5 stars? Well, it was a little short. Even taking the (good) bonus game into account, it was a little over 4 hours which is a bit slim for a CE at the price they are.
I'm really not a fan of furry critters as helpers and wasn't expecting to like this game particularly. Used a coupon on it. Very good visuals and decent voiceovers combined with a surprisingly tense and atmospheric story.
HOS were well drawn, interesting (and relevant) mini-games and using the Ring of Destiny wasn't the snooze-fest that activating items can often turn into. A very well put together and nicely paced game.
I really liked this one and as I said, wasn't expecting to. Well worth giving this a go to see if you like it. An unexpected, but most welcome treat.
Lots of folk seem to like this one. I did too, although for me it lacked the wow-factor that makes a five-star game. That is down to personal preference as the game moved along nicely and the puzzles, though fairly simple, were well integrated and made sense. I could quibble about the size of the script in the (varied - yay!) HOPs but that really is nit-picking and not at all a deal-breaker.
It wasn't so immersive that I couldn't break off and have a cup of coffee, but it is an honourable entry with plenty to entertain. As I said, personal preference only and many will thoroughly enjoy this.
Another of those games where I can't quite put my finger on why I didn't love it.
I've played most of the Amaranthine Voyage series and none of them have quite nailed the five star for me. There was a lot I really liked about this outing, but the whole failed to deliver.
There were no game play issues, I liked the world (deep frozen steampunk) and found the story fine. I think, in the end, my problem with this was the pacing. It's very variable, feeling extremely rushed and unexplained in places and extremely slow in others.
Overall, not likely to be replayed, which is a pity. Still feel that there is an Amaranthine Voyage waiting to wow me, but sadly, this wasn't it.
I've enjoyed most of these very much (especially this one and the first outing) and am happy to see the devs deciding to bow out with it on a high note. Nothing can (or should) run forever and I'd rather see a good series ending at the right time.
There are some very good swashbluckling pirate stories out there in HOG-land and this is one of the better ones. The series has always been notable for a good mixture of fun, creepiness and some great art combined with interesting characters. Leviathan Reef is no exception. Good visuals, a few twists and turns of the plot, no angst and well designed puzzles and HOPs. Can't ask for much more really.
It's hard to say why this one didn't hit the gaming sweet spot. There is, I stress, nothing wrong with the game at all. It is a decently long, well put together HOG with some good puzzles.
My quibbles are minor really. Some of the scenes are very dark on my machine and the ending is conclusive but not really explained. I don't play with sound, so can't comment on that. Another minor irritant was the constant capitalisation of "You" in the dialogue.
Possibly I was just underwhelmed because it was all very familiar, but then a lot of games are and some of them click and some of them don't.
I am recommending because there's nothing to really dislike and what didn't work for me may well be someone else's perfect cup of tea. Try it and see.
I love Greek mythology and this looked like an interesting take on it. It's a fairly challenging game and the storyline is just fine but I found the graphics poor. They looked very blurry and clunky. This wouldn't normally bother me much, but the lack of crisp outlines did become an issue. The artwork all felt a bit dated compared to most recent offerings. That said, it was fine and atmospheric when it needed to be, but I just kept tripping over the not-very-good-to-my-eyes graphics.
I enjoyed it, in a mild way, but this isn't one I'd recommend as a top of the range game. Sorry. You should give it a try though as your tolerance levels may be different. I'm giving this a recommend for the interesting story and some decent gameplay, but I really do suggest you play the trial first.
While this isn't the best that Mad Head has ever produced, that isn't such a huge negative. Mad Head remain one of my favourite developers and their graphics and story-telling remain second to none for me. Even their less than stellar work ranks high.
As you'd expect the story-telling and visuals are magnificent and the main story is very atmospheric and involving. Nice to have a male protagonist for once as well. It is on the short side, which drops the ranking a little and the bonus game annoyed me. Without spoilering too much, the girl in question has been introduced as a tough cookie who has boxing training. To put it mildly, the bonus game does her character no favours. Mad Head don't usually make mistakes like this.
Not their greatest, but still very good.
I recommend this game!

I'm honestly not sure quite what was so appealing about this game, but it gripped me from the outset and never let go. I played the SE and never felt even remotely short-changed.
Art was impressive, storyline immersive and the puzzles and HoPs were interesting. All in all a highly polished piece of work and treated the player as an intelligent being. You can't really ask for much more than that.
