I like this series and was looking forward to this outing, but it didn't in the end, cut it for me.
The positives:
I found the story engaging, if predictable, enjoyed the HOGs (morphing objects in those), some attractive and interesting puzzles. It's also seems to be a decently long game - I was at the unfinished cathedral before I gave up.
The negatives:
For the love of gaming, will you please include a skip button on some of these puzzles. Nothing is more infuriating that deciding "fine, I'll just pass on that one" and not being allowed to. If I want to be able to stop poodling about with matching statues to a panel that I have to click out of the board to see, I should be able to.
I'm feeling a bit ranty about this to be honest. It broke the immersion and caused me to give up. I don't usually review games I didn't finish, but this was extremely frustrating and I do expect better from this developer.
Looked like a promising game, but I really can't be bothered to find out now and have uninstalled it.
I enjoyed this game, but found the black loading screens a distraction and increasingly an irritant. Another niggle was the constant revisits to the HOP scenes. It just felt a bit lazy.
While I don't regret buying the game and it's a fine example of its genre (creepy, child going missing, events from the past impacting on the present) I wouldn't have wanted to pay full price for it.
Without the irritants mentioned above, this would have been a four star game. Your tolerance may be greater.
Nevertales is a thoroughly engaging, expertly put together bit of work. It has high replay value, an engrossing story and an excellent mix of HOS and mini-games. All of these are fully integrated into the story. The care taken in developing this games is clear in every element - from the immersive graphics, to the ingenious way backstory is given to the player.
It is not necessarily the most challenging of games, but it hit exactly the right spot for me - enough to get me intrigued, but not so frustrating I was left banging the keyboard and gagging for the skip timer to fill.
Mad Head, along with Artifex Mundi, are pushing the boundaries of casual gaming in a very good way. Both developers know their audiences and aren't afraid to find new ways to challenge and engage. I can think of longer-standing rivals who might take lessons from them both.
I thoroughly recommend Nevertales. I'm also hoping this is the start of a series.
Discover the city of Apothecarium, where inhabitants are caught in a perilous struggle against a powerful alchemist who is taking the lives of innocent!
Other developers take note: this is what a CE looks like

... except it isn't. It is a straight up SE from a developer I've not seen before (or not to my knowledge anyway). Apothecarium is a little gem. Tons to do, morphing objects in the HOS (a first for me), interesting story and no obvious hand-holding. Add in achievements, secret boxes, fun puzzles and you have a very entertaining game indeed.
Oh yes, I like this one a lot.
Review based on demo and very short as off to play the full download. I really hope this isn't the last we see of these developers.
You've arrived in the peaceful resort town of Aurora Peak to investigate some mysterious local crystals. But the devious plot you uncover there could endanger the entire world!
I enjoyed the opening of this and really hoped for more. It reminded me a little of Botanica, but didn't take advantage of the exotic things happening to the plants and animals in Aurora Peak. A pity - this felt like a missed opportunity to do something a little different.
Apart from a few issues convincing the cursor that the hotspots in HOS really were the hotspots, I had no gameplay issues. This is a lavish, professional production, but it all feels rather routine.
I suspect we haven't seen the last of our misquided villain either. If there is a sequel, I hope it has the courage to take the game a little further.
I do recommend, but on reflection, should have waited for the SE. This is a 3.5 star CE for me.
If the title seems contradictory, it is. I have played and enjoyed the other Haunted Legends games, but this one feels like a bit of a mess.
The story is potentially interesting, but dissolves in a morass of inadequately explained twists. The dwarf remains an enigmatic nuisance with no reason whatever given for any of his actions. Bonus chapter goes nowhere and is entirely pointless.
Graphics are pleasant, if rather familiar - and the same can be said for the majority of the HOS and mini-games. Nothing wrong with that, but nothing really sparkling either.
The gardening was fun, but had precisely no relevance to the game at all. As such, it became a distraction, which in an already fragmented story, is not a asset. Add in some very poor translations for dialogue and HOS scenes and you have something that could have been a great deal better than it was.
I will recommend, but with considerable reservations. You won't find much out of the ordinary here unless (like me!) you find yourself inexplicably unable to stop growing lilies.
I recommend this game!

I liked this one a lot.
Cartoony graphics with an appealing and well explained story. No HOS (which is fine), plentiful puzzles which made some sense, likeable characters. Not a hand-holder and there were definitely moments when I went through the classic adventure "apply everything to everything" routine. Haven't done that in a while.
A couple of quibbles. The hint system isn't always helpful. It is directional, but occasionally took me to areas where no action was yet possible due to unmet conditions.
The only other real quibble I have is that the ending was far from clear to me and rather rushed. I haven't seen a CE version of this on BigFish, but gather there is one. There is a cut scene, but precious little explanation to go with it and the whole thing just grinds to a rather abrupt halt. Since this is a decent length game, I felt slightly let down.
Give it a try. If you enjoyed the Nightmare Realms games, you might like this.
Despite the series title (which is off-putting), this latest entry is really very good. Lots to explore and do with a goodly number of HOS. The mini-games vary wildly between perfectly straightforward to "hmm, not sure what to do here".
Graphics charmed me and the storyline is engaging, rather than intrusively sentimental. The plot is satisfying and has an appealing twist at the end. I have played and enjoyed the other two episodes, but this stands alone quite happily.
Transporter map is helpful, although it does occasionally insist there is something to do when there isn't.
I'm not sorry to have purchased the CE, but in honesty, although I enjoyed the bonus chapter, it doesn't really fill the bill as far as bells and whistles go. Not a huge amount of replay value, unless you enjoyed the story enough - which I did, but that may not be enough for some of you.
My quibble is that there are some odd mis-labels in the HOS scenes (please note, a Sunflower and a Snowdrop are not that much alike). Also "figure" is unhelpful in the extreme, particularly in a scene containing many, many items that could be regarded as a figure. Resorting to hint and finding they meant a chess piece was irritating.
That aside, this is a thoroughly enjoyable game. I recommend, but would suggest waiting for the SE unless you regard a bonus chapter as enough reward. Do note that the bonus chapter is not needed to end the story conclusively and well.
This definitely qualifies as a full CE package - SG, collectibles, all the bells and whistles. Quite an engaging story too and rather beautiful graphics. I always play with sound off, so can't comment there.
Decent mix of HOGs and games, not ridiculously hard and all well-executed. HOGs are often a two visit affair - once for a junk pile and then a second time to collect 12 of something. These are easy enough to identify in advance and give yourself a head-start.
I would have liked an interactive map, but that wasn't a deal breaker in any way. It still shows you where you need to go to complete a task - just doesn't take you there.
Can't quite put my finger on what stops this being a 5 star game. Despite the obvious care and attention that went into it, something didn't quite click for me. Still a worthy CE and well deserving of a trial to see if you like it.
You made winged people and it didn't work out ... oh, dear!

Pachyderm Productions are rapidly becoming my favourite developer. They're not perfect by any means, but I definitely get the sense that they care about their games and the storylines. The downside is that not all their CE output really merits the CE label (assuming that you don't regard wallpaper and soundtrack with some extra gameplay as enough). This one has collectibles and achievements, which increases the chance of replay.
I'm coming to expect a level of graphical gorgeousness and entertaining characters from these guys and wasn't disappointed with the latest outing from the Surface series. Jeremy (the brother you need to rescue) is pretty much an idealistic twit, but the game manages to tread the line between showing admiration for his achievements and wanting to slap him for not thinking it through. Very engaging.
There is a steampunk feel to the graphics, which I liked and the world is well realised. Mini-games and HOGs well balanced. I skipped a couple of the mini-games that just weren't to my taste, but nothing unachieveable.
Played with a heavy head cold and low tolerance, so anything I enjoy under those circumstances goes on the replay list.
