Eipix announces this is the last game in the Dead Reckoning series and I am somewhat sad to see it go. With the exception of a couple of the games in this series, it has been better than average throughout. I don't think this particular offering is a 5 star game but still ranks close at 4 stars for me. Things which bring down the rating from 5 stars for me are: the ridiculous beginning hang gliding down to the college campus (not a very dignified entrance for someone who is supposed to be receiving a literary award, unless the award is for comedic writing), the irritating missing zipper pull (yawn) and I can't figure out why you would kidnap someone and then hide them inside a display case (this was in the bonus game).
I was glad there were no ghosts and ghouls or evil villains for a change. The plot was well done and a refreshing departure from fantasy love stories and haunted houses. This is a grown up murder mystery and your job is to eliminate suspects and find the real murderer.
There are morphing objects in the HOs, collectibles and a souvenir room. Everything can be replayed if you miss something and want to go back for it. Mini games were not challenging. Connect the dots (!?), swap trophies, rotate the puzzle to get the ball into the hole. The only interesting game was the pinball game.
Eipix consistently offers good graphics and voice acting and this game is no exception. One person's voice did kinda grate on me a bit however.
Try the demo and see what you think. You may decide to wait for the SE but don't pass this game up. Its worth adding to your collection. There may be draw backs but it is better than the average game we have had lately.
I am so excited about this game that I couldn't wait until I completed it to review it. I will definitely be buying it.
I will not comment on plot as others have done this but I did find it to be enough of a departure from the norm that it interested me. This has so much to offer including the CE bling for those who want it, plus gorgeous graphics, nice music and pleasant voice overs. True the HOs are the list type and perhaps not all that interesting but there are other things which support this game to make it better than the fare we have been served lately. It flows seamlessly, doesn't give you a headache trying to figure out puzzles and is just an all around pleasurable experience.
I am sure there are many who will not think it deserves 5 stars but I do, simply because I am enjoying a game that is not so challenging as to be drudgery. The story may be somewhat ominous but the game is light-hearted without the gloomy evil villain trying to take over the world.
As usual take it for a test drive first, kick the tires and see if its a buy for you.

Right at the beginning is a mini game which I hated because I could not get the cursor to line up the parts, they just simply would not move! You may have better luck with this than I did but eventually I had to skip it. I started to throw in the towel right then but I decided to play out the demo to see where the game would take me. When the demo finished, I was intrigued enough to buy the game since it was on sale even though I wasn't really all that enthused. I'm not disappointed that I bought it but it really isn't a great game. It is a story of jumping from location to location to find supposedly extinct ingredients for a poison antidote. These ingredients include a the last of a type of leopard secretly kept for centuries in India.
I loved it because there were mini games which I have not encountered before, the hidden object scenes contained morphing objects and there were collectibles to find which were not hard to spot. I agree with other reviewers however, that instructions on some of the mini games should have been more explicit. I hate to skip puzzles but I did once or twice simply because I could not figure out how I was supposed to play it.
As usual this dev does not scrimp on the art and VOs. Those were very well done. Once you complete the game, there are souvenirs to collect and if necessary you can replay the HOs for those pesky morphing objects you may have missed. You can also return to find any collectibles you may have forgotten to pick up.
The plot was different enough to be interesting but still the superhero H.E.L.P agent must save the world. In the bonus game, the agent must return to save the few lost souls left behind earlier. There wasn't much logic in this part. Papers which should have been important enough to keep together were scattered about and had to be found before they left. There was always something that had to be done before the rescue could continue and in the final scene everyone had to jump from a cliff onto the deck of a boat!
I agree also with other reviewers that perhaps the dev should put this series to rest. I think the value and fun of these games has just about been exhausted.
As I said, at times I hated this game, at others I loved it. Try the demo and see if you are intrigued enough to want to purchase it.

Here we have the story of the evil twin sister who is sent to an asylum then eventually manages to kill her nurse and steal her identity. She is truly a psychopath and kills her entire family. We spend the game in another haunted house filled with ghosts. Not only do we have the ghosts of those who were murdered in the house but we have the ghost of the evil twin who murdered them as well! Even tho she is dead she is still trying to kill her good twin. Confusing as to how that came about but nevertheless the good twin is hospitalized and near death with some unknown illness.
This nest of ghostly victims and the perpetrator make for a fun, kinda creepy romp through a nice long game filled with puzzles and hidden object scenes. I was happy that there were not dozens of amulets to find.
I disliked the rehash of mini games we have seen over and over. Personally, I'm tired of spinning marbles in a circle to line them up by color. I'm also tired of the repetition of things like finding a fishing rod then having to find the line, the reel and the hook. Can't we ever find a complete fishing rod? Furthermore, can't we ever find a key in a lock that doesn't break apart when we touch it?
The coins collected throughout the game could be used at the end to "purchase" different games in a separate room. I liked the idea of using the coins collected for additional games instead of purchasing those ridiculous items for your little sidekick in other games. The morphing objects were puzzle pieces. Most were easily seen but some were not.
The bonus game was good and ended with a twist which made you wonder if this was a prequel or what.
I liked this game but not it is not a great game. It is satisfying in length and has just enough of a creep factor to keep you interested.
Once again, try the demo before you buy. I have discovered that sometimes games that get rave reviews may not be to my liking while games with low reviews may be just my cup of tea.
Mad Head games are usually among my favorites. I don't know what has happened lately that the games they are putting out now are less than spectacular. I haven't been wowed by a Mad Head game in awhile. This one is no different. We have another evil entity possessing the body of a human and trying to destroy the world as we know it. The dialogue bordered on ridiculous sometimes in the "I'm gonna get you! Now you die!" way. Of course, no one ever dies and you always win the requisite battle at the end because its so easy. Furthermore, while I'm doing all the running around in the game and pilfering items for my own benefit, I always wonder why the bad guy doesn't show up more often. And then there's the camera. Its supposed to allow you to track the ghost or whatever it is but really IMHO was somewhat unnecessary.
I thought the bonus game was stupid, had nothing to do with the main game and was so easy as to be boring.
In spite of all the fails in this game, there are some good parts, or should I say better parts so I can't completely nix the whole thing. The HOs were interactive and contained morphing objects. The mini games were not brain drainers and I liked that. Although the dialogue may have been weird, the delivery was good. I don't listen to music so I can't comment on that. I did like the collectibles but they were very easy to find.
I'm hoping the next game by this dev will be better because they have a good track record. Try the demo however, you may think it a 5 star game also but I'm not sure it rates that high.

I guess we have had our best shot at a great game for awhile with Halloween Stories Invitation.
So, that said, this is not a great game but overall, I liked it except I found it pretty elementary. Most of the time, If you find an object you use it quickly or know exactly where to use it. The tasks were usually completed within the scene where you are working and there isn't any trotting back and forth between levels on the map.
I thought the story was different and it is the only reason I gave the game 3 stars. I've not encountered a lady with a chimera curse before who cannot help the fact that looking on her face causes blindness in the besotted men who chance to see it. Much to her dismay, she cannot control the curse. Of course, at the end all is well and the detective reverses the curse on her and her hunchback friend as well as the poor men who fell under her curse.
Some of the mini games were different from any I've encountered and were challenging. There are not a lot of hidden object scenes which are mostly list type and the objects are easy to find. Click on pretty much anything that stands out a bit and you will find something.
I don't listen to the music because I find it distracting but the VOs were well done and the scenery is nice. I was not impressed with the bonus game. It just seemed to be an after thought without much planning and didn't seem to me to have much to do with the story of the main game.
If you are looking for logic and challenge, try something else. If you are looking to waste a few hours, download the demo and see what you think.

Overall, this is a good game. Five stars... maybe, maybe not. I gave it 5 even tho there are a couple of things in this game that were of the been there done that variety i.e. the missing zipper pull and shoot the target. Kinda fun shooting the target when it is a demon doll that jumps around the room. One of the mini games frustrated me to the point of skipping it and I do not like to do that. And there were a couple of mini games that I haven't seen before. They were equal parts frustrating and fun.
It did creep me out sometimes! I expected things to jump out of the screen and they did, I expected ghouls and Halloween fun. but the creepy whispering pumpkins.. Yikes! Gave me chill bumps! I know whispering pumpkins...you just gotta hear them to see what I mean.
I've seen the basic story done in other games but I guess the twist is that Jane is a seer. Didn't see this coming tho. She seems to be young because of the ridiculous remarks she makes at times. Poor Joe. But I'm not going to spoil it by telling about Joe.
The creepy collectible dolls get hard to find. Morphing objects not so much. Picture fragments are everywhere. .
This really is one of the better games to come along in awhile. Definitely a CE worthy game IMHO.

I usually know how much I'm going to like a game by whether or not it drives me to complete it. This one does not do that. I found myself making excuses not to finish it and so far I haven't. Some of the Haunted Hotel games have been very good, this one isn't. It began with a nice idea that ghost hunters were investigating the old Alexander Valentine Hotel. But something sinister is lurking in there and you won't find it until you have located numerous keys, amulets and various shaped objects. Locating all these is just busy work and filler. Not impressed.
Along the way, you encounter the ghost hunting crew... all dead, except for one, with sad notes on their bodies requesting the person who finds them to let their family know they loved them (isn't there always the "if you find this I'm dead" note). The one who has escaped death so far is your sister who looks uncannily like Valentine's wife (isn't this always a requirement?). She may not be dead yet but she doesn't look so great. He snatches out of your clutches every time and drags her all over the hotel to hiding places. Once again, isn't that always the case? The HOs are the list or silhouette kind and the mini games are easy. Another yard stick on how much I enjoy a game is how much I like the mini games. Nothing outstanding here.
I haven't yet come across the "missing zipper pull" thing another reviewer mentioned but I'm sure that in a game like this its bound to come along. Nor have I run into the old I'm not sticking my hand into that icky spider web. It could be just a matter of time before I do.
I haven't finished the game yet so I don't know how it ends and at this rate, I may never finish it. I bought it because it was on sale.... still wasn't a very good deal. This is not a CE worthy game.
I gave this game two stars simply because I liked the ghost hunter idea. Otherwise, meh!

I liked it! Yes, we have the same old worn out story of the evil menace trying to destroy the world, or empire in this case, but nevertheless I am enjoying this game. There's nothing new here, same old worn out, overdone games and HOPs but I enjoy collecting statues, finding morphing objects and other collectibles. I have also seen the crystal disease in another game but that was long ago.
The graphics are gorgeous, the voice overs good. Can't comment on music since I always turn that off. Puzzles and mini games are not very challenging.
This may be an overdone, trite, worn out game but it is a pleasant past time without having a brain drain to solve it. I am giving it four stars simply because there is nothing new here. And, as penmom mentioned, some of it doesn't make much sense either but who said games have to be reasonable? Its called fantasy.
Other reviewers have noted you will either hate this game or love it. I hated it. This game is a mess. The story line may be its only redeeming factor. The game very old school. I became bored after about thirty minutes and quit. Hated having to find those elusive berries to obtain hints. And of course, there are those things to do which have been done over and over again. Something in the fireplace, find the dog a bone, repair the tool before use, etc., etc.
Try the demo, you may agree with the higher ratings. I don't.
