I have the 3 prior Amaranthine Voyages and enjoy them all. Therefore I was somewhat dismayed during and after completion of the Obsidian Book demo. My biggest personal problem is with the story. As stated in other reviews, there are so many good ( and poor ) games available to us that before I will consider a purchase the story must get my attention and then hold it. For me this is not a book that I elect to continue reading. This is not to say the game lacks any merit. As is typical with Eipix creations, AV # 4 is well drawn and the HO segments and puzzles are nicely crafted. I am also pleased the main character is not gender specific. There is the evil Dr. Schroder intent on gathering HARMONIUM , an element which will provide her with awesome powers. The player needs to find the way to foil Schroder. We do obtain a device that in the demo can mend or clean items necessary to the task. There are collectible scholar books but I found no morphs. As stated earlier, the game does not have the panache required for me to spend . I doubt I would even use a free game code on this one. The story is the culprit as it just doesn't cut it for me. For those who like this book, enjoy.
I recommend this game!

For me, the Haunted Hotel games are either a hit or a miss. Eternity is definitely in the miss category. We play as a detective promised $100,000 to help Professor Reynolds's security detail to keep Reynolds alive and well. Of course, from the onset, we know this will be next to impossible to accomplish. Reynolds is shot at with a high power rifle and the detective is able to shield him/her self and the prof using a trash can lid?? Yeah, right !! Mr. Tobias, the head of the detail, suggests an abandoned hotel as a good safe house.
That's when the fun starts. Reynolds is captured, we meet a masked man via transcriptions using TV's who claims Reynolds is really a bad guy himself due to experiments gone bad. We need to obtain objects and use them to further the quest as is typical of all HOPAs. None of the HO segments have any degree of difficulty. A couple of the puzzles require a bit of thought, yet all are doable. There are morphs and collectibles ( masks and puzzle pieces ). The story has been told in lots of prior games, with many of them done better. I was put off by the too purplish coloration in all locations visited in the demo. All in all, this Haunted Hotel is not one I will make a reservation to visit.
I don't recommend this game.

Some games have reached a magnificent level of accomplishment that other games, although good, suffer from the inevitable comparisons. This Dark Romance is such a victim. The most recent blockbuster game was released a few days ago ( The Reflection of Life ) so it's hard for me to make an adequate comparison. Heart of the Beast IMO is an average effort geared to new players and certainly to youngsters. I might acquire it for my 8 year old grandson who likes some HOPAs when he can be torn away from video games. The story line is old hat what with an evil witch ( Claudine) who seeks immortality via the Rose of Life. Claudine has turned humans into animals. We are introduced to a hawk, horse, and lion during the demo. An interesting aspect to the game is the player gets to compete in the game as Beatrice, a human tasked with defeating the witch and also as a lion like beast. Some of the puzzles are far too easy including finding butterfly parts and then assembling them to be guided into a forest clearing. A couple of the HO segments are clever and there is lots of interaction within. Collectibles include portraits and butterflies, the purpose of which I did not seek during the demo. Games of this fashion being within a circus setting and having people transmuted into animal forms have been done in other games and done more convincingly. Not all games can be grand slam home runs if I can use a baseball metaphor. Heart of the Beast is a single that drives in one run. I'm sure lots of players will enjoy it so it gets a mild recommendation. It's just not my cup of tea.
I recommend this game!

When I started this game, my initial impression was somewhat ho-hum. A princess named Espera has been bound up in a trap of vines. The king calls forth Grace ( that's us boys and girls) to free Espera from her bonds. At this stage my thought was been there, done that oh so many times. Fortunately I continued. I soon realized that the beauty of this game lies in the fantastic use of Ho segments and some intricate puzzles. During the demo, and I used up all 90 minutes, there are no traditional word list HO scenes. The type used are nevertheless quite clever and some involve travelling to various locations to either acquire items or to place them in required spots. Some of the puzzles ( which far exceed HO scenes both in quantity and quality) are original with a few being difficult. Kudos to the developer for abstaining from hand holding which is prevalent in lots of games. Equilibrium is not geared for the novice player. This pleases me to no end since there are not enough games that veteran HOPA players can really admire for the challenge that this game provides.
The story line is beyond fantasy, It's really far out and that is a good thing. I have to the conclusion that the fantasy realm is generally preferable for the genre. The player is in a part of the world called Creatos, there are 3 others including one named Equilibirum. Should Creatos fall into the hands of the villainous Avkos, the entire world is doomed. Grace has her hands full since the tasks she must perform are often mind-boggling. I won't go into detail insofar her quest is concerned. Let's just say she needs to be one smart cookie to succeed.
The game is wonderfully drawn, the voiceovers are well done and do much to further the story. We have an owl assistant and in this game its help is not overdone. I dislike games when the helper is overly obtrusive. This bird generally stays in the background and that's good. For those who groove on collectibles there are 114 mirror shards and the player is told how many are in each location once one is discovered. My impression is the game will be a long one. The player has options as to difficulty level. Match 3 can be used as an alternate form in some puzzles but I never resort to M3's partly due to my disdain for them and I can't figure out why M3's are ever available in HOPAs.
I am further pleased that the introduction of Equilibrium coincides with a weekend sale. For those of us who delight in great and challenging games, Equilibrium is much more than a 5 star effort. I gravitate toward games that are equal to or better once they are replayed. I'm thinking this is one of those. My highest recommendation is made here: GET THIS GAME!!
I recommend this game!

I forced myself to complete the entire demo to learn if there would be any improvements as the game developed. I wasted my time. There are too many flaws from both a technical level and in the story. Technically the game is poorly drawn. The characters are extremely wooden. There are no lip movements to accompany the voiceovers. Worst of all is the constant use of pink and purple colors. Had the developer run out of a larger stock of virtual paint? As to the story itself, we have seen this premise a number of times and done with more success.
A woman purchases a mirror and once she gets it home, it takes on a life of itself by housing an insidious creature reminiscent of the Shade who was a great villain in another HOPA. We have another lady detective, Ms. Gofford who is summoned to the manor to investigate the mysterious goings on. Given the era portrayed in the game, I doubt there were any female gumshoes working. Gofford meets a valet and young Patrick, supposedly the son of the woman of the house. Through a series of HO segments and puzzles, some good and some bad, Gofford makes progress until she discovers the weird mirror and is accosted by the ghoul in the mirror. Thankfully the demo ended here.
The developer has conceived some fine games in the past but dropped the ball with this one. The story is drastically unoriginal, we are forced to endure another helper, this time a Siamese cat, Mr. Jenkins and none of the games within the game grabbed my attention.
Figuring most if not all developers read these reviews, please take seriously that a recent innovation allowing the player to choose the gender of the game's main character should be the norm in all HOPAs. I'm really tired of constantly being forced to adopt a female form. Give us guys a break, will ya!!
Overall, I find nothing redeeming about Phantom Reflection and must give it a resounding thumbs down!
I don't recommend this game.

The Alley Strikes Back is a terrible version of balloon poppers.
It has absolutely nothing to do with bowling. As someone who grew up at bowling lanes, I am appalled that the developer could so trivialize a wonderful sport. The premise it that renegade bowling pins are on the prowl and the bowler must remove them from the lane using variously colored balls to strike the same color pin. Should a pin reach the foul line, the bowler loses. If I want this type of game, I'll dig out my ancient Atari. For some unknown reason, the entire 60 foot lane is not used, the player has 3 places at the foul line to place a ball and then just point and click to hit pins. The player has no option to hook the ball. This game is in a word: awful. Why BFG offers on occasion games like this one is mindboggling.
I don't recommend this game.

Eipix has done it again folks. The developer has created that which IMO is a masterpiece. The story is as follows: A bush pilot
whose gender is unknown ( a good feature ) crash lands the plane into a valley. The setting is reminiscent of Shangri-LA except this otherwise idyllic place is beset by the Dragon King, a beast of supreme powers released from its prison. It seeks to overpower humankind and dominate the world. Our bush pilot for some unknown reason is the chosen one, the only person who can defeat the monster dragon. There are 5 other dragons who are opposed to the mighty one. They need our help to vanquish the Dragon King. The player gathers necessary items along the way via exceptionally well done HO segments and puzzles. We have acquired a dragon heart that is instrumental to defeat the monster dragon. The heart is used during puzzle sequences to disrupt the king and also to complete other puzzles. One that is quite interesting involves numbered circles that must be joined in a particular fashion. Eipix borrows as part of the story line terra cotta soldiers which in actuality were carved during the reign of Qin Shi Huang, the very first Chinese emperor over 2 thousand years ago. How much the game's soldiers are used and to what effect remains to be seen as I have only completed the demo. I have one very minor gripe about the game. It's that most of the Oriental characters speak unaccented American English. This takes away a bit of the ambiance of the game.
Otherwise Heart of Desolation is magnificent. The story is top notch, the drawing is impeccable. I marveled at a cormorant that needs feeding at a dock setting. It looked real. There are 7 morphs to be found during HO segments. I failed to find any collectible items but that may be something I alone failed to recognize. Nevertheless, this edition of Myths of the World is a fantastic addition to the HOPA world. This very well could be a game of the year contender. There have been but a handful of outstanding games during 2015. This one for me certainly ranks with the best. Combined with BFG sale offering a second game at $1.99 over the weekend, I plan to be busy at the computer.
I recommend this game!

I'm sometimes a sucker for the well made extreme fantasy games with the Awakening series and the Dark Parables being among the best of that ilk. This edition of Queen's Tales falls far short. For starters, the story is one that has been told many times already. In this case it's an elf wrongfully accused of thievery. When he reaches adulthood he is vengeance bound. The king is abducted and the only way he can be freed is if his daughter promises to wed the bad guy. Been there, done that oh so many times in prior games. Not to be outdone in mimicry, the developer deems us worthy to have a helper, this time a flaming phoenix. Of course, the evil elf can't use his powers on his own so he employs various minions including some huge dude and an oversized rat which we get to miniaturize after creating a reducing potion. Our heroine is tasked to find dad and vanquish the evil one. This is accomplished by means of hidden object segments, puzzles and merely picking up items which is typical of all HOPA games. There is nothing remotely interesting or challenging in the puzzles and the HO scenes are relatively uninteresting IMO. We get collectible chess men and some other form of collectible that I already forgot what it was. Can you surmise I am somewhat bored by the game? It could have been OK had the developer used a spark of originality. Alas this is not the case. New players might have an interest. I wonder if my colleagues enamored with fantasy HOPAs will share that thought. I rather doubt it.
I'll pass simply because I played similar games way too many times.
I don't recommend this game.

This is the second Cadenza game and the first one is brilliant. One aspect of this installment I enjoyed is suggested by my review title. While there have been many games in which people of color are characters, this game is the only one that I recall that has an African-American as the protagonist. Nice touch Mad Head!!
Emma Johnson is engaged to wed Tony a jazz band member. While preparing for the wedding, Tony is called away to a very important new music gig and Emma follows in a separate car to the Jazz Pepper Club. She is thwarted from seeing Tony by the club bouncer so she must use forms of subterfuge to gain access to the VIP lounge ( that's where Tony is ). Emma gains access to a backroom by plying the janitor with liquor and via other actions utilizing a combination of puzzles and interactive HO segments gets closer to reaching her beau. Emma is suddenly accosted by a strange man who only leaves her alone when he is threatened by the bouncer wielding a baseball bat. I don't want to give more of the story away but one can only imagine things from here on out will not be a bed of roses for Emma. Another apparently sinister character is a vampy jazz singer. The songs she sings in the demo are horribly written. No Grammy winners here!! The demo ends with Emma in a rather dire situation.
There is a lot I like about Kiss of Death. The story is very well constructed with a hint of the dangers to follow introduced even in the game prologue. Mad Head always provides nicely constructed HO scenes and interesting puzzles and their excellence is evident in the game. Collectibles and morphs are additions and there is no ridiculous 4 legged or flying assistant. The downside for me in this Cadenza is the game moves at a snail's pace and there are some silly actions in the game. An example is the procedures taken for Emma to provide the police her fingerprints and a synopsis of events when a body is found. The means of gaining this info is certainly not routine police work. I like the game enough to wait til the SE version comes out. Kiss of Death is better than most games but for me fails to reach greatness.
I recommend this game!

I only have one other Fear for Sale, the MC( something ) Manor
which I really like. It's one tough game. I don't remember the others in the series, I guess they did not leave much of an impression on me. Our protagonist in Endless Voyage is a reporter Emma Roberts who reads about a cruise ship ( the Virginia ) which is a duplicate of another ship that mysteriously vanished decades ago. Intrigued by the similarity, Emma decides to board the vessel. I've been on plenty of cruises myself. This ship has a unique method for acquiring a boarding pass with a clever short game. Once aboard she hears a conversation between the captain's daughter ( Grace Sullivan ) and her beau ( NIcholas ) We hear a gunshot and a distraught Grace tells Emma that Nicholas has been murdered. The suspect is Dylan who is a rival suitor for Grace's affection. The ship captain urges Emma to investigate the slaying but keeping it quiet so as not to disturb or frighten other passengers. Strange but there is nary another vacationer on board which leads to the Virginia possibly being a ghost ship. As is the case with all HOPA's, there are tasks which Emma must perform via puzzles and hidden object segments. There are standard list HO scenes and a couple others that are interactive and cleverly done. Some of the puzzles ( demo only ) are routine and one or two are again very clever. There are morphing items and collectibles which are attributed to characters in the game.
One neat feature is that Emma gets to nosh and sip and do other things unrelated to game play. They are merely asides that bring about a chuckle. The story evolves like a fine mystery novel and the game play is pleasing. I am not overwhelmed by Endless Voyage because it reminds me of similar games some of which I own. I am at a stage where a new game needs to knock my socks off for me to buy it. This is the reason I grant it 4 stars. Had this Fear for Sale been slightly more original I would certainly acquire it. Perhaps I will wait for the SE and use a free game code. For those players fairly new to these games, this voyage is one that shouldn't be missed.
I recommend this game!
