Veteran HOPA addicts like myself always look forward with great anticipation the next installment of the incredible Mystery Case Files. In this chapter we take our second foray into Dire Grove. Now let me address the one aspect of the game I found distressing. Going all the way back to Return to Ravenhearst the developer has used live actors in cut scenes. The realism portrayed is an enhancement to the story. I am somewhat dismayed that live actors are not used in Sacred Grove. Is it because Elephant has teamed up with the MCF folks to create this installment? The game doesn't get ruined for me but I am a bit peeved.
Now on to the things I like about the game. I am so pleased that ( is this the first time it has occurred in a game ? )the player gets to select the gender of the detective. That the primary protagonist in the great majority of HOGs and HOPAs is female is an annoyance. I realize that there are lots more women playing these games does not mean that us gents should get short shrift. OK, I am now off the soapbox.
Dire Grove is again beset with mysterious tragedy. The town is engulfed in a mind numbing deep freeze and attacks from predatory animals. This has forced women and children to abandon their homes leaving the men as the only possible defenders. We learn that a strange group of druids known as Mystwalkers are causing the seemingly endless winter at Dire Grove. As the story develops, a couple of brothers become central to the events enveloping Dire Grove. One becomes deathly ill and the healthy brother essentially sells his soul to the Mystwalkers in order to rescue his sibling. The game player is tasked with finding out just who these mysterious Mystwalkers are in an attempt to save Dire Grove. Of course, obstacles in the form of puzzles get in the way of the detective and he or she ( in deference to the lady gamers )
must solve these enigmas in order to get closer to the truths surrounding Dire Grove and the druids. There are no traditional hidden object segments during the demo portion. There are certainly lots of interactive items gathered and some very clever Rube Goldberg like puzzles such as those first introduced in the initial Madame Fate game. Some of these are devilishly hard and I did skip one during the demo after getting stuck on it. There are if I am correct 84 collectibles, the purpose of which I do not know at this time. If there are morphing objects I ran into none. I also did not find any map but the hint button serves as a jump point. Whether this is among the best MCF's remains to be seen. At first blush it does not compare favorably with RTR, the original Dire Grove and last years Madame Fate. For me all the MCF games have been superior efforts if for no other reason that they have often broken new ground which other game developers have followed suit. I can only hope that my opinion of Sacred Grove remains high after completion of the game.
I recommend this game!

In my review of the CE version I mentioned that I am not a big fan of vampire tales. The Black Rose is a welcome exception as I find it compelling. Part of this reasoning is that Eipix hardly ever fails to tell a good story and then backs it up with solid game play. The beginning of the story confuses me somewhat.
It opens by telling us we are on a Penobscot ferry boat. For the uninitiated, the Penobscot is a river in Maine, USA. For some unknown reason, this ferry is in Louisiana and for another reason when we get off the ferry ( by rowboat ) the landscape includes a mountain in the background. For anyone familiar to Louisiana, it has no mountains. I figure these geographical errors are due to the fact that the good folks at Eipix are not as familiar with American geography as they should be. A minor glitch in the story but a mistake nevertheless. In the story, we are tasked with accomplishing the demise of Benjamin Brooks, a powerful vampire. We do find him on the ferry but Brooks escapes, hence the rowboat to shore. During the row, Simon ( our assistant vamp hunter ) is washed overboard by bats so the player must now go it alone. Of course, while on the ferry and then on land there are numerous HO scenes and a variety of puzzles to complete. I particularly enjoy the way the HO sections are handled in this Myths chapter. The developer generally has welcome twists to the usual fare which keep games interesting. None of the game play is difficult during the demo. We encounter a female vampiress. Is she the Black Rose? The player evidently rescues Simon but alas he has been taken under the spell of the lady vamp. In fact he attacks the player and so ends the demo. As I said previously, vampire stories generally don't cut it for me. This is part of the reason for 4 stars. I also found the game play too easy during the demo. This loses a star. I will acquire the game as an SE by using one of my free game coupons.
I have all of the Myth series games and to me this is the weakest of the lot. The series as a whole though is strong enough for me to use a freebie. Enjoy!!
I recommend this game!

For some reason all of the Final Cut games have never held any appeal for me and this one is no different. Eipix develops terrific games and I am sure this one will enthrall a lot of game players. For me the story line which is a very good one, does not interest me at all. Compare this to a best selling novel or an award winning movie, while the book or film attracts large audiences, they will never be accepted 100%. I wish I did enjoy the story given here since there is much to be happy about in the game play itself.
I won't get into the story as other reviewers certainly will do so. I really liked the hidden object segments and lots of the puzzles ( in the demo ) are first rate. I am pleased that Eipix has provided some novelty in its HO scenes and puzzles since a lot of what we get in HOPA style games is repetitious. The initial cut scene is among the best we have witnessed in quite a while. Being witness to 3 accidents or are they murders at the start of the game does a lot to whet the appetite. Unfortunately for me, it all goes downhill after that introduction. I realize I am probably in the minority in my assessment of True Escapade. It's just that nobody can please everybody all of the time. I do recommend the game for those who like the story as this Final Cut is very well made.
I recommend this game!

The Surface series has been among the better groups in recent years. For me the first 2 games are still the best of the lot. From the beginning of Game of Gods I found one element a bit disconcerting. In prior Surfaces, real people were used as characters. In this chapter, cartoonish figures are employed. I guess the nature of the game might prevent the use of live action figures. It's not a really big deal yet something unexpected given what is presented in prior games.
We play as Alice who gets a phone call from one of her fellow researchers telling her about a new job that will pay the group quite well. Alice ventures to bizarre building and learns her team has been imprisoned in a crazed weird game. Should Alice refuse to play the game, her colleagues are doomed. She is transported to a place that looks ordinary but we'll discover that it is rather other worldly. Since this is a HOPA, Alice must perform certain tasks and locate items which will enable her to make progress and ultimately find and rescue her friends. There are the usual itemized HO scenes. There is one where the player must find pairs of objects by moving other items around to locate said pairs. I liked that one. The puzzles are all variations of well known themes in the games we all enjoy. None were hard during the demo. There are 2 forms of collectibles, rosettes ( which are in some other Surface games ) and figurines. I did not bother to determine how these things interact within the game as I will wait to find out after I buy the game. The demo ends when Alice is kidnapped by a really creepy lumberjack and thrown into a pit. At first blush Game of Gods doesn't seem to be as good as some of the others in the series. Of course this reaction is bases solely on a demo. The folks at Elephant generally deliver good to excellent games. I have all the Surface games in my collection and will certainly add this one with the CE version.
I do recommend the game to my fellow HOPA enthusiasts. Who knows, after completion of the game I might just elevate it to 5 star status.
As an aside, since we are so close to the American Thanksgiving holiday, does this mean the next Mystery Case Files offering is imminent? I hope so!!
I recommend this game!

Haunted Legends is a recurring series and The Stone Guest is the latest chapter. This edition is not a continuation of its prior chapters. Children are going missing and Don Leporello is accused of taking them. We, as detectives, must get to the bottom of these disappearances and determine if Leporello is the culprit or find evidence to cast guilt elsewhere.
As in prior episodes in the series, the dwarf is a minion of a more perverse power and it is our task to defeat the bad guys.
According to legend the Stone Guest is a statue whose eyes must not be looked at, to do so means losing one's soul. The primary objective is to repair or replace the heart of Leporello's son. Along the way we must help certain characters overcome their fears by providing them with an item of familiarity. Of course we must first find said item. To free Leporello it is a comb and there is also a younster ( Alonso ) and he must be given a tooth. As in any HOPA game, HO segments must be completed and a variety of puzzles need conquering. The HO scenes do not include word lists at least in the demo. Instead we need to find related items such as water carrying vessels or place things in their proper location. One of the better puzzles involves placing numbered books in such fashion as to have them add up in a sequence which will give the player something to further the game. The demo ends with some evil doer, perhaps the Stone Guest, carrying off Leporello's son to who knows where. Is this the best Haunted Legend? I say no.
Is it the worst? Definitely not!! To me the series is losing its appeal simply because the dwarf needs his final comeuppance. Of course were this to happen, then the series comes to an end. This in and of itself might be the proper course. The game does not induce me to purchase the offered CE. I found no collectibles or morphing objects which are so prevalent in games. If there are any, I certainly did not come across them. If there are these extras I hope another reviewer will point them out. That being said I would wait for the SE's introduction in a few weeks if in fact I choose to want the game. As with all new games, some players will love it and some will despise Stone Guest. Place me in the I LIKE IT group. It just does not overwhelm me. I'm thinking a free game code is the way for me to get this chapter of Haunted Legends. I grade this effort a B+.
I recommend this game!

The Dark Parable series has always delivered and this installment is right up there with its predecessors. At the introduction to the game I was enthused that Blue Tea has collaborated with Eipix in the making of this DP effort. The two developers are amongst the best and having them work as a team cannot be bad. The sunken kingdom of Prasino mysteriously arises from the ocean depths and our intrepid detective has the quest of discovering what's going on. Initially she frees a mermaid and encounters a giant eel that is none too friendly. Then she meets a cloaked stranger who offers some subtle clues as to what and where the detective must travel. As in all Dark Parable games, we complete fractured object ( FROG ) segments and some interesting and varied puzzles. There are collectible crescent moons and parable segments to gather. During the demo the object of the game is rather vague which is OK with me as I'm sure the story will evolve during game play. As is the case in DP games, Little Mermaid is visually stunning. I am pleased that the FROG scenes are somewhat harder than in some of the prior games. The demo ends when the undersea king makes an appearance and is livid in discovering a " landwalker " has entered his realm. We do not encounter any villainous characters in the demo but I am sure someone will emerge.to deter our efforts. At first blush, this edition doesn't hold the same level of enthusiasm as some of the earlier games. However I am such a fan of the series that I will certainly acquire the game. Players who enjoy the fantasy style games will find this a welcome addition to the genre.
I recommend this game!

I normally shun Match 3 games as I find them boring overall. It seems to me that all are the same basically with only the story being altered. Typically an M3 starts easily and then there are chains, ice and other obstacles placed in the players way. All M3's have powerups obtained along the way to enable the game player to complete a given grid. DragonScales is different in that the grid is octagonal and as well as being an M3 game is also has bubble popper built in since random groups of 3 colors must be utilized properly to finish any grid. Mind you, I will not be buying this game because M3's are not my cup of tea. If I were a fan of this genre I would acquire it due to the novelty of the game. I also liked the names given to the dragons, very Nordic monikers and I wonder if the names are those actually used in the regional mythology. To afficionados of M3 games, DragonScales should entice and even though I stay away personally from these games I can endorse it enthusiastically on behalf of those who do enjoy them
I recommend this game!

The developer is one that was prevalent a few years ago but hasn't been seen for a long time. The look of the game tells me it was more than likely created 4-5 years ago. The characters all very wooden, their movements are terribly clunky and the voiceovers are straight out of Eastern Europe. So many games are developed in Russia, Poland and other countries in that part of the world. Some are excellent. Not so this Mask of Baragus. We truly have landed on a "cursed " island. The HO segments are run of the mill and so are the puzzles. BFG has given us too many games lately that are not at all new. This one certainly had some cobwebs lifted before being offered as the new game of the day. It might have had some appeal a few years ago.
Given that games have reached a much higher level of sophistication, Cursed Island just cannot fill the bill. New players to the genre might find it OK, but I can't fathom that any veteran HOG /HOPA player could ever want to spend good money for this mess. Avoid it!!
I don't recommend this game.

When I saw another Mad Head game being delivered my enthusiasm level increased since this developer has become one of the best in the business. I also have enjoyed the previous Nevertales games. This one just does not have the same degree of style and substance that MH games generally provides. We play as a young lady ( I forget her name if in fact it is given ) who's dream is to a powerful woman in the business world and this is in the world as we know it. She gets a visit from Gears, a mechanical owl from the fantasy world players are used to seeing in prior Nevertales. I didn't much care for the intermingling of reality and fantasy even though most of the game is in the fantasy world. Gears brings a message that the girl's dad has been convicted of a serious crime and is scheduled for execution. Of course, our heroine must enter the fantasy world in order to save her father from a grim fate. The player travels to and fro solving certain puzzles and finding items ( HO segments )which are standard fare in HOPA games. None of these tasks are difficult, save one. There are rune like items collected and all have a numerical value. There is one puzzles in which 3 of these runes are used. I figured out the sequence and performed a series of clicks but nothing progressed. Did it again and a third time knowing I did it correctly. Reverting to the strategy guide, I read that what I performed was correct. It's possible there is a glitch so perhaps I should uninstall and reboot the game. Yet I don't feel like doing that since Smoke & Mirrors does not appeal enough to me to want to do so. Let's face it, not every chapter of a game series will be a home run. The mighty MCF games have a couple of infield singles. Heck, some players have reviewed a couple MCF's as strike outs!! If I may continue with a baseball analogy, Smoke and Mirrors is a ground rule double but the runner gets stranded on second base and does not score. I'm happy that BFG has a nice sale this weekend, for me this game will not be part of any purchase I might make.
I don't recommend this game.

The game is spectacular in every detail, so let us start. First of all the story is engaging. We find ourselves encountering the very strange Gray family having been invited to a supposed family reunion. This is where the fun starts. Upon entering the Gray castle ( after completing a few tasks to locate the entrance key ) we soon learn that all is not well within the family. we discover that Thomas Gray, taken in by the Grays, has a special talent as an artist. His paintings come to life. In fact during game play, we get to animate a few things including a butterfly, owl and chipmunk during the demo. Turns out Thomas has a thing for Luisa Gray but he is spurned when Luisa falls instead for John. This drives Thomas off the deep end and he is now bent on some sort of revenge against the Grays. Here is where the story gets more interesting. The Grays, at least some of them, can be transubstantiated into wolves. We don't learn why in the demo and that's a good thing in terms of story development. The developer of Color of Fright does a great job by allowing the story to develop in much the same way as a good book will. This aspect of the game is enough to compel me to want the game in my repertoire. Fortunately there is much more than the story to propel the game into the realm of greatness. Secondly, I enjoy that there is little or no hand holding by the devs. The player is allowed or is the better term forced into thinking his way through the game. This is best illustrated in some clever puzzles, a couple of which were hard enough for me to skip ( during the demo only as I rarely skip ). The HO segments are very well done. I liked the first one wherein the player needed to find keys to open doors to the hidden objects themselves. I wish the keys were a bit harder to find. Third, I have often asked game makers to think outside the box and use some originality. This game certainly delivers on this front. For added pleasures there are morphing objects and some funky little creatures to collect. 2014 for me has not been a banner year as far as my personal game pleasure is concerned. However the year is looking to end in style as there have been some A+ offerings. This Grim Tales "reads" and plays like a first rate occult thriller. It satisfies me on every level that I want in a solid game. The CE is a sure fire winner and Is without a doubt being added to my own collection.
I recommend this game!
