Dive into an epic journey as a museum owner in pursuit of an undead pirate who has kidnapped your daughter in Nightmares from the Deep: The Cursed Heart!
It's been 12 years since this game came out, and most of the reviews are from that time. I recently replayed it and remembered how great the stories used to be! This is a Loooonnng game! It doesn't have any morphs or collectables; it doesn't need them; you have plenty enough to do just saving your self and your daughter from a very nasty pirate whose remains were brought to her museum and in putting up the exhibit, she brings this very bad number back to life! There isn't a way to move around using the map, but you soon get used to it,, and most places are in a straight line, and if you forget where you are or need to be, the map does show that. This played well on my Dell from 2018 with Windows 10, so it was well constructed, with a good engine that adapts well to todays pc's.
I enjoyed playing this game, not least of which was because I got to skip the puzzles (which for the most part I'm miserable at), and just focus on the adventure. I liked the writing in this one; the characters were more than just one dimensional, and there were some surprising twists along the way. The two types of collectable, (bags of grain and different types of stones, were right from the story. They weren't too hard to find, and at the end you get to feed a barn yard of animals, depending on how much grain you found. One thing I found annoying and I've noticed it in several games recently, when one of the characters gives you something to help with your search, they always reach around behind them with their right hands and pull out the thing. It's pretty stiff and awkward looking. That's being nit picky, but it bugs me. Otherwise a fun game for an afternoon when you don't want too much of a challenge!
Would not let me pick up key once I'd found it, and put it in the chest. Stuck in a loop that just kept hopping back in to the inventory. Tried everything, but no go. Usually if I just reload after closing computer it will sort itself out, but this time it didn't. Very disappointing.
Basically a HOG with continual junk pile HOS. Started off with just a flurry of still pictures, no explanation, then the game commenced with sound, asking you to investigate. Problem is the objects are often far too small or dark. There is a sketchy murder background, but not enough story to justify wasting so much time on junk piles. For me this went to the other extreme from few HOS to way too many!
I was so convinced I would love this game I purchased it before the demo was up! Then right afterwards, the game froze in a scene where I had to pick up a couple of cups and something else. I tried everything, but sadly it won't progress. Hopefully they will issue a patch and I can play it! I gave it 3 stars for the 30 minutes I was actually able to play the game. Everything else gets 5 stars
I've played the whole of the demo. Interestingly I recently replayed this game and at first glance there is very little improvement. I *think* the map is now interactive, but it may have been before. The puzzles are the same. It used to "stick" a bit more when choosing an item from the panel, but there again, I can't be too sure. There are no collectibles or morphs that I could see. Had to rely a lot on the hint button, which means that it isn't more intuitive or better written. All in all the improvements were extremely subtle, but others perhaps noticed more. Hardly worth getting as I have the original. But a good choice if you haven't played the game yet, although I would suggest the less expensive SE version.
Well done sequel, well plotted and written. My favorite in this series so far. I especially like the parts where they force you to think logically and put your thoughts in order. The character development is good - note especially the cold strong faced woman who allows Ms Holmes to help her. I've known women exactly like her - and she is not the villain. Good on you, devs! Morphs and collectibles are well hidden These is a box in the extra’s called “Expedition” where you can go through and find whatever collectibles you missed; they make you work for it, which is fair. I just don't like it when they give no opportunity to go back once you've finished the game. (See other reviews for the rant;). I also like that they give a little back history for the character in these collectibles. Altogether, very well done. Looking forward to Ms Holmes next adventure!
The slime at the beginning was only a tease, thank goodness. It was a little slow starting but wow what a great story and the story kept you moving along at a great pace! Best adventure/HOG I’ve played in a long time.
There was only a few scenes where the art was almost washed out and that was a dream sequence, thus the lower visual quality point deducted. I especially like the no nonsense heroine who accomplished an incredible amount – all while dressed in lovely outfits and 6” heels! The story (ies) was/were laid out in a different way with three different chapters and each from a different person’s point of view. There were some humorous scenes, especially toward the end that involved a vet called in to help Laura. I’ll bet he was a Marine! The puzzles were fun and varied, and the morphs and collectibles were rarely easy to find. But they do let you go back and pick up what you missed; It does take a bit to figure out how to do this. (Try backing out to the home screen then clicking on "extras", then click around until it takes you back to a game scene.) Unfortunately the reward for this is about 25 games of the same type, connecting numbered squares to each other, getting harder with each level; hardly worth it unless you're a hard core puzzle fanatic, so you needn’t find all you missed if you don’t want. It was still a great game. Highly highly recommended.
Weird woman reaches out from a mirror and grabs folks. There were at least 3 game crashes in the first part of the game. I rebooted and it’s been ok. The rest of the game played without incident. This is basically a tale of a female psychopath, born without the ability to have emotions or a conscience. Very grim. The HOS are quite good. Overall grey and purple so visually boring thus the 3 stars for Visual/Sound They let you go back and find the morphs and puzzle pieces you missed, which I appreciate. As I’ve said before, there is no point in keeping people from going back and finding what they missed. They’ve already paid for the game! As for only 4/5 on the Fun Factor, I don't think you can call a story about about a serial psychopath "fun". It did hold my interest however.
Delightful tale, nice and long (both main and bonus). Nice shading of characters who are not all bad or all good. The main bad guy is rather charming in a way (think of Anna’s dad in the middle Grim Tales series) And the way they presented the bad guy’s collaborator in the sequel was nuanced and believable. Well done story writing.
Also plenty of different kinds of HOS, although I did get a little tired of looking for the symbols by the 3rd time it was presented. And I think they should let non-puzzle people write the instructions for the puzzles. Too many times (not just in this game) they could have explained better; what is obvious to a puzzler mind is not always to the rest of us!
But bottom line, this one was worth the CE price, and will definitely be on my replay in a year or so..
