I really enjoy this series and this latest is no exception. The graphics are excellent and lots of HOS that are fun with odd things to find. Unlike some of these darker games Elefun gives you a break with the color and occasionally has some bright scenes, which is pleasant. This is a perfect game for a Friday night when you just want to have fun and collect all the goodies. A sure fire favorite for all of us who love Hidden Object games for the, wait for it...hidden objects!
I really enjoyed this post apocalyptic tale, where we see the results of power and technology gone amok. Actually besides the occasional radioactive monsters and giant yuckies with slime, much time has passed and the earth is starting to heal.
Others have described the game so I'm just going with my impressions. One original move which I greatly appreciated is no final scene involving blowing up the baddies. They actually barely show up in the game (it's all about surviving, so there is enough conflict!) but the end is great fun nevertheless! It was great!
Music: was good at times, I turned it down when it got too scary, yeah I'm a wimp. Art: Excellently well imagined and drawn. Surprisingly even though many are genetically deformed, some, like the uncle of our heroine, look pretty hot! Story: I contemplated giving only 4 stars for the very slow start. This seemed a looong game. But you can really get immersed in this alternate future landscape, which owes a bit to the "Mad Max" movies. But the story was so well told and the pace so excellent (after the beginning) I had to give it a 5. Wow two 5's in one week - maybe the games are getting better? Kudos for adding hidden mushrooms in the bonus game, which many companies don't bother to do Also I really liked that I won 6 extra brand new puzzles (Score!) and it looks like there are 20 of those bonus unscramble the string thingy puzzles, to which I am seriously addicted. Very nice freebies and well done A great game and a fresh story after the innumerable gloomy haunted psychotics that we have been overwhelmed with lately. Not that I don't like a good psycho but this was very fresh and enjoyable. So enjoy this very excellent game!
This is an amazing game and kudos to the writers and artists who clearly have done their homework.
There are many little acknowledgements of the original artists of the books; W. W. Denslow and John R. Neill, and their style throughout the game. They (the writers and artists) really _got_ the artistic time period of Art Nouveau, that made a big part of the popular illustrations of the times. This is not to say the game is overpowered by this art style. The influence is delightfully subtle but the modern touch makes it even better.
For instance, the magic slippers are silver, as Baum originally described them. (A tragedy that the movie people wanted to show off the new color filming and made the slippers red). They are drawn in classic Art Nouveau style and are beautiful! Also I noticed large poppies figuring in the background of a HOS. Poppies were a popular flower, (for various reasons!) in the Art Nouveau style. But again, One HOS scene included lots of Kansas items (cows, barns, etc.) and of course lots of sunflowers for Kansas!
In addition to the art, the game is a nice retelling of the tale in a bit more adult mode, although there is nothing remotely offensive or too adult.
I really liked how they had eerily realistic renditions of the Tin Woodman (he WAS tin and a man!) and the scarecrow, with his flighty brainless style. Also the action takes place with an adult Dorothy, living in Kansas and a Tornado. Not to mention the darling Toto.
Also the sequel/bonus chapter was just as well thought out as the main story, including an amazingly drawn witch. I'll have to go back and look at her again.
I won't give away any more; there are still many things to find and see and I can't wait to play this game again.
If you grew up with the original Oz books as I did this is a classic. I can't remember when I last gave 5 stars, but this game deserves it. I very highly recommend this game for all faithful Oz fans, and those who like a beautifully crafted game. And three cheers to 4friends who are fast becoming one of my favorite game companies!
I'm a big fan of these Park Ranger Games and looked forward to a new one.
However this is a big disappointment. Instead of the lovely out doors and hidden objects to look for these scenes are junk piles; so much garbage to wade through you don't get a sense of wonder like the other games gave us. I only played the demo and in each of the scenes there were only 3 "junk" stuff to pick up (empty bottles, pizza boxes etc, that you put in the trash.) It didn't need them there was so much junk around in one scene you couldn't see the lake - and that pile of old pieces of scrap metal in the lake was not junk!
I agree with most of the positive reviews. My only caveat is how anyone knows they have found all the morphing objects as only the moons are listed in the collectibles. Now that I say that I do remember a sign posted at me that I had found ? morphing objects. But it was so brief I don't remember. Come on guys, how hard could it be to list the number found, even if I can't go back and find the missing morphs as I did with the crescent moons. The ending was rather creepy which was fun.
As in most of my reviews,I will leave to others the breakdown of the game into hos, morphing objects etc. I'll just give you my basic reaction to the game.
I liked it quite a bit. The story was sort of rambling, but that is fine with my liking for adventure and wandering about in mystic realms. The art work was a bit elaborate, (check out the Guards armor!) but that added to the fun. Hos were varied, so I didn't get bored. I like collecting objects throughout a game, so it was fun finding all the morphing cats. But I took off a star for not showing us how many we had got by the end of the game. After all I invested a lot of energy looking for those kitties! I like it best when the devs let us go back and find the missing ones. I'm almost sure I got most of them, but...we'll never know :( The bad guy gets it in the end in a very satisfactory manner (he was a VERY evil bad guy) and I liked the bonus chapter that showed us how that actually came to pass! All in all a pleasant game and lots of fun. As well, it will be fun to replay!
I really liked this game. The story line was pretty standard; rescuing your younger brother from the evil world.
But what stood out for me is that in the Hidden Object Scenes, they had many different options, a hos within a hos, as well as putting things together, and having puzzles within HOS. It made a nice change from the same old hos.
I only gave it a 4 because it lacked a sense of humor or even a challenging view point. I do like the newer trend in CE's of only having one or two hidden objects to look for as you play the game. For awhile there, there were so many it really distracted from the game. In this one you only had to collect skull coins and used those to buy refuting statements for urban myth type cards.
In this CE game I found the sequel game almost better thought out than the main game, and worth playing.
For my penny pinching soul, this would be a great game to buy during a sale.
I just finished playing the CE version of this Reflections of Life...' and I have to say it is my favorite game this year!
Based on the culture of the Bulgarians, Macedonians, Russians, and Serbians it is colorful and very well drawn.
A great thing they did was make several puzzles use the Cyrillic alphabet, the ones we usually see when Russian is posted anywhere. Absolutely fascinating and thinking outside the box.
The story line is harsh, like many from this part of the world where life has been harsh, especially in Siberia where this story is set.
But it also reveals a colorful and creative people. I absolutely loved all the designs and the contrast between the old beliefs using totems and animal spirits (very similar to some of the American Indian art) and beautiful Eastern European designs. No modern american products stuck in the middle of HOG's. Lovely hand carved items, woven fabrics with colorful and unique designs. There are also 80 owls to find, and they were NOT easy! But that was the only in-game distraction: all the other things to find were part of the game.
I said the puzzles were medium, but there were a couple that were really challenging, arranging shapes (rather like Pentominos) using very faintly drawn picture hints that took me quite a while. . But for the rest of this is an amazing, consistent and intriguing game, with lots to be learned about another culture. I highly recommend this game to all intermediates and fans of different cultures, art and storytelling.
I want to write this review while it is still fresh in my mind as unlike usual I did not keep notes. This time I'm going to give you my pros and cons list. First the Pros.
1. Well drawn. I particularly liked Sprout! (the little wooden sprite in the game. What a cutie!
2. And speaking of Sprout it was well done to be able to choose if you want a little helpful critter to companion you in the game. This has long been a contention in games, some people loving the helpers, other hating them. So getting to choose put that problem to rest. Well done dev!
3. For once no finicky pieces of goodness knows what to put together in the HOSs. There were variations like shadows of objects, and they were challenging but not frustrating. 4. The hidden objects (four leaf clovers and statuettes) were challenging but doable. 5. All in all a fun adventure game, except for the cons...
CONS And the reason this game was only given a 3. 1. The necessity to totally pause the game every time you achieved some level or point. This happened far too many times and seriously jeopardized the flow of the game. EVERY time you finished a challenge the game stopped while they posted (usually more than one) a dialog box with your achievement on it, and they took their time. Very annoying 2. On the other hand sometimes an action was so quick one didn't even get to see a piece of writing or a scene. And more than once if I got near the edge of an inset it flipped me out to someplace else. What is with that? 3. And finally and extra game that you had to play a popper game to win the puzzle pieces. Not only that you had to play it 6 times! Extremely annoying and unnecessary. Considering you were able to let gamers choose or not a companion, why force them to play one particular type of game which had NOTHING to do with the game or the jigsaw puzzle?? Bad.
My recommendation unless you are totally hooked on collectibles, is to pass the collectors edition and get the SE. This is a fun adventure/HO game and well worth playing, but not in my estimation worth the price of a CE.
After the many disappointments over the holidays, February has given me a couple of winners.
I have the previous games in this series but don't remember them too well. I found this one well done and a good solid choice for beginning and intermediate HOG fans. The colors are great and bright. The collectibles (90!!) and morphing masks are not too easy and kudos to the devs who let you go back and find the ones you missed. I only missed about 5 of the collectibles and 3 masks, which I consider pretty good. As always with these extra collectible thingies, one can get distracted by the game and miss them! So sometimes it is fun just to not try too hard and then play the game again, just focusing on these hidden object.
The story line certainly wasn't its strong point but served as a link between HOSs; however the creation and rendering of alien type worlds was well done and served almost as well.
All in all a solid 4 for me and I recommend this game!
