I've tried completing this game many times. I like a lot of the Haunted Hotel series, but this one not only falls flat, but repels me. Here's why- the graphics make me feel nauseous, irritated and dizzy! (1)There's too much unnecessary movement going on all the time (2) the graphics are strangely dark and blurry and (3) lack the finesse and detail that this developer usually offers in its games, and finally (4), the story unfolded in such a way as to totally be lacking in charm or story-telling skill.
Available at BFG since 2017. Review based on demo. What solid fun! Crazy, surreal and weird, but in a peaceful, serene kind of way. I am loving every second of this! Please get more games like this! More than anything the whole thing reminds me of the little kids' TV adventure, "The Clangers" from the 70's.
You will collect items from scenes and use them in other scenes. You will also come across puzzles. As you collect leaves, you open more scenes to investigate.
************************************** HERE ARE SOME HINTS FOR NAVIGATION-
MENU- press ESC
MOVEMENT/TRAVEL: On any given scene, if you move your cursor to your screen edge, and a white arrow appears, you can move to a scene in that direction.
CURSOR LIGHTS UP: Hovering and scan your cursor across ALL items you see in the scene. If the cursor LIGHTS up, it means something is to be done or collected. Click the mouse, and something might fly into your inventory. Like in a typical HOPA game, you have to decide where to use it, which might well be in a totally different scene.
INVENTORY: If you hover your cursor to the top of the screen, you will see a circle drop down. Click on it and your inventory appears. There are spaces for the leaves you collect, and other spaces for your inventory items. Inventory is NOT lockable.
EXIT a scene- to reverse out of any scene- go to bottom of screen and select the arrow that will appear.
**************************************
GRAPHICS - Widescreen or Full screen. Good enough to create the right ambience, but not super detailed.
PUZZLES: NOT skippable. NO instructions. Easy to medium difficulty. If you find it fun figuring out what to do in a puzzle by yourself, then this will be enjoyable, otherwise not.
SOUNDS – I didn't see any adjustments in the menu. No music, which is good for me (since no adjustments). Your background sounds are a relaxing mix of, white noise-outdoor sounds and effects of the environments and creatures you see.
MAP: NOT TRAVEL. Will show you where you are in the scheme of things, so that you can work your way around. JOURNAL: NO DIFFICULTY SETTINGS – 1 MODE ONLY
HINT: NO HINT
CHARACTERS: From what I've seen, none as such. However, beasties and creatures seem to be lurking here are there!!
Love story about torn apart sweethearts. The scene is set to make you want to help! The voices were enchanting and the ambience immersive. Everything about this game appealed to me. For the first time in in ages, I actually listened to the voice-overs and skip-scenes. I liked the music too! Lovely bitter-sweet awesomeness.
Available at BFG since 2011.Review based on completed game. I found this game very relaxing. There are times I want a simple game, but one where I'm left to figure it out. Even though there are 15 or so HOPS, the gameplay really is more the style of a point and click adventure game. I really enjoy a lot of the 2017 games, but sometimes I just want to play a game of this style.
***This game is not like 2017 games and does not have shiny-sharp graphics or anything like that.
***90% of the time, you WILL have to work out what to do by yourself, and for some reason the hint doesn't always tell you!!! BFG does have a walkthrough which you can look up.
***Lots of places to go, indoors and outdoors, on your adventure.
CUROSR- The cursor won't change shape as you scan across scenes. However, as the cursor touches on places and items that require attention, you will get SUBTLE sparkles underneath.
GRAPHICS - Widescreen or Full screen, I played Full screen to avoid a stretch. Pretty basic in places. But in other places lots of detail, just not very sharp, that's all.
HOPS: Wordlists. About 15 HOPS where only 3 words appear at any one time, so it actually makes it harder and fun. Some items are difficult to see and I did start to get some eye-ache.
PUZZLES: All skippable after around 1 minute. All pretty simple. No instructions. Easy to figure out. SOUNDS - with 2 adjustments. I liked the music!
MAP: NO MAP. Game is chaptered. JOURNAL: NONE DIFFICULTY SETTINGS – ONE MODE SETTING ONLY
HINT: About a minute to recharge. Not always helpful. BFG does have a walkthrough. INVENTORY – Remains visible at all times CHARACTERS: Hardly at all. Once or twice, briefly.
Playing the demo on this game will give you a very good idea of what this whole game is about.
I recommend this game!

Available at BFG since 2017. Review based on completed game. IF you can get through the first 2 chapters (the guy at the beginning is very off putting!), there is a VAST IMPROVMENT from chapter 3 onward, which lasts all the way through chapter 8. So six of the game chapters are excellent! . Suddenly I felt I was in the game, as opposed to being a bystander. I think that the change occurred because the environment in which you are in becomes more interesting -in the land of the Shade...
The HOPS were good to look at and ornate fragmented objects (as is the style in Dark Parables - I love it when they're ornate!). Some of the puzzles are interesting, and some so new that I didn't really know what to do! So I guess that's good!
Graphics can never look that great when the setting is automatic widescreen and PIXELS ARE STRETCHED. When I changed my screen setting to the smaller size, suddenly the graphics became super sharp. I wish these developers would add an ASPECT-RATIO adjustment into their games, since the quality of the scenes improves vastly! All the work artists have painstakingly labored over is diluted otherwise.

This game has incredibly beautiful graphics. However, as I played the game more and more, the sadness of the children disappearing just built and built and became depressing. The thing is, that several times they show mothers trying to hang on to the kids and this great big scarecrow thing comes along, suspends them in the air with magical energy and then they are forced inside a bottle, much like a genie disappears into a bottle. You can see their crying faces. It was just too much for me, and I found it disturbing. I can handle it when stories have children disappear, just not when they show details of it. Anyway, you might not be bothered, but if you will be, here's a head's up.

Available at BFG since 2017. Review based on completed game. Amazing graphics! Actually everything about this game has had so much detail put into it, including the storyline. I wasn't expecting such an amazing game! Buildings, rooms, outdoor environments...all have pleasing features. Many times articles and items look real. The quality of these graphics are not cartoon-like at all! Draped cloths that imitate still-life paintings, aged ceramics, depth and distance, wow, and the list goes on. How did I almost miss this?!
The HOPS are visually pleasing and puzzles are mixed and interesting. The sound quality is fantastic.
I thought the story was well-told, well-voiced and to be honest, I felt like a little kid being told a gripping story. I got that same sense of, "oh, what happens next!" all the way through, combined with a cozy feeling. This contrasted with the slight revulsion and apprehension at the appearance of the summoned, evil, Dementor-like creatures.
Available at BFG since 2017. Review based on completed game. What a wonderfully relaxing and absorbing game! The whole game has a serious tone as opposed to a silly, cartoonish vibe.
Don't base this game on the first chapter. You'll be taken to multiple locations with great graphics and scenes: watery havens in warmer climates, jungle wilderness, underwater (my fav!), caves and labs. You'll also interact with a variety of weird and wonderful tech! The sound side of this game has had a lot of thought put into it. Actions and scenes have appropriate sounds which immerse you further into the game.
At some stage, you will get helpers, but they're not cartoon-cutesy. There's a monkey and baby jaguar. I really enjoyed every minute and in fact when I found myself beginning to rush, I took a break and saved it for later, so I would enjoy it more.
Most HOPS were fun and nice to look at. Puzzles were of all sorts and all levels. Character were done very well!
Available at BFG since 2014. Review based on completed game. The whole of the middle section is a bit lethargic, but the fun factor improves in chapters 7 and 8! The graphics are ok overall, just not pinsharp, the way I prefer them. This game is definitely good on sale or for a coupon. It's probably more of a 3 star game, with the last quarter being a solid 5 stars. There are at least 12-15 HOPS, mainly wordlists and the puzzles are a mix of all levels, and all skippable. . The backdrops include water, greenhouses, olde -world building with cobblestones and castle.
Fuzzy graphics with lack of depth, dull and annoying characters. Once you arrive at the mountain of portals, at least 1 hour into the game, you get to go to the realm of Gimli, the graphics improve, and the story takes a sudden turn for the better. However, this doesn't last. In the next realm, the realm of Giants- no effort is made to make anybody or anything look giant! A complete missed opportunity! Also mostly the action in the game is completely non-intuitive. Any HOPS that I played had difficult to distinguish items. There were further realms to play, but I was so bored (not pleasantly relaxed) that I had to give them a miss. Yes there are plenty of puzzles, mostly easy, but I lost the will to try any of them.
I have to say that the musician who keeps strumming the lyre is annoying. Not only him but the lyre itself. There is A LOT of conversation in this game. I skipped most of it.
WHY are the graphics so dark? My ultra-bright computer is set to max and it's still too dim.
One of the worst games I've played in a long time.
