I really liked this game and would have given it 5 stars, except that the artwork is not high definition quality. The characters are beautifully drawn, good storyline, good mini games and good game flow. There's a nice haunting operatic aria wafting from the theater punctuating the story. The game deserves a look, and the lower ratings are not merited.
It's rare for me to not want a game to end, but this game had me wanting for more. So why 4 stars instead of 5? I wish the artwork were high definition. It makes the game look dated.
The story for the game and the background story for the entire series is very well done and easy to follow. The narrative explaining the kingdom's special elements are told in poetic narrative--usually it's done with misspellings.
Mini games are on the easy side, but lessens chance of frustration. HOS are the usual, but ties in with overall game and theme.
CE or SE? You will miss out a lot not buying the CE. Here are some highlights: 1- collect MOONS in each HOP of main game and bonus story to get your horoscope 2- there are 2 bonus story games. One is very short but should appeal to romantics at heart (ie female audience). The 2nd bonus game is decent length and a teaser for a future installment in the series. 3- Hall of Mirrors/achievements--each achievement earns a mirror, which splashes onto the screen in a blaze of fire and explains the significance of a character in the series 4- a TEST--basically a questionnaire of things you like and matches up your likes with games by the devs that meet your likes. It's cute. 5- MG refers to a marble/match game that can be played independently of the main game. 6- Find a PORTRAIT of the characters in the series in the various scenes and at the end you get some trivia about the character. 7- Find a CROWN in each scene. They are displayed in the Crown room. 8- Find a CAT in various scenes (not every scene) and you get an interesting tidbit about the cat at the end. 9- Isa's story is a mini book about Isa and his cameos in every game in the series, done as an HOP. 10- the usual--wallpapers, concept art, replayable HOP and mini games, movie clips
I'm looking forward to the next installment in the series. I've played other games in the series, and it's kind of hit or miss--fantastic or just so-so. Hope it's as good as this one. This one ended too soon for me, but I would not have felt that way except for purchasing the CE, which really fills in the details and fun trivia of the characters encountered in the series.
I bought this game based on the fantastic work of a previous game in the series (Everburning Candle), but unfortunately, this game does not reach that high bar.
The artwork is not high definition, which is so important for immersive and persuasive game play.
The story is a mishmash of traveling to 4 Alice in Wonderland portals and a sci-fi fantasy of your soul being shattered and put back together by acquiring the magical orb containing a part of your essence.
The mini games range from easy to mildly challenging. It is a decently long game, but that is about the only good thing about this game.
Try the demo. Ratings are like beauty, it's in the eye of the beholder.
Much as I liked the artwork and voiceovers, the story doesn't make sense and as a result, the actions needed to progress also didn't make sense and made for a lot of aimless wandering through a haunted hotel that houses an Egyptian city?????
I also had issues with some of the mini games, in which the instructions weren't that clear as to the objective to clear the game. However, most mini games were not that difficult. A few puzzles look easy on the surface but harder to solve than at 1st glance.
Do I recommend this game? Yes, with caveats. It's a long game with great artwork, good mini games, more puzzles than HO junk scenes, but the story doesn't make much sense.
This is a game where a map is very helpful in navigating your way among the many doors to hidden rooms. There is a lot of back and forth among rooms encountered many moons ago. Playing without helpful messages would be extremely confusing. You will collect items along the way that will not be used for a long time, so keep at it. And some of the doors have a long view shot instead of a close up shot to clue you in that an object in inventory can be used to open it--that was strange (compared to most games).
If you're big on artwork and length of game, this game fits the bill. If you like a gripping tale and enjoy a good detective story (that makes sense), try the demo before buying.
Although this is a dark, gloomy HO game, the visuals are excellent and almost high definition. The narrator for the game sounds remarkably similar to Sam Shepard, ie great. The mini games are not very hard, but you will have to spend some time to solve on a few, but they are all very manageable.
HOS junk pile scenes are not as frequent as most HO games, which some may find refreshing.
Much of the game involves wandering through the hotel and watching film reels that summarize why certain people received a "death sentence."
It's a fairly straightforward mystery HOS game, with just the right amount of suspense as you make your way to the conclusion. It is well done, and a very nice game to play if you enjoy playing detective. It is not a scary game, but suspenseful, in the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock.
I have played other games in this series, but this one is FANTASTIC. The one thing I didn't like is there a few creepy scenes in the game, but if you play without sound on, it's not too bad.
Basically you play a detective investigating a fire at a Victorian era insane asylum, which holds outcasts who have become paranormal beings who are wreaking havoc on the asylum, but the truth is sadder than things would appear.
Normally I couldn't summarize the story very well because they are forgettable, inane, or just ho-hum. This is testament to how well the story is told and the tension for finding the truth develops.
Parts of the asylum are dark and dreary, but the artwork is high definition and bright and cheery in at least half the game. There is more to like than dislike, and the high definition quality is easy on the eyes. Characters are very well drawn and authentic looking.
Mini puzzles are not too hard, and most of the actions are intuitive, making for smooth game flow.
One fun part about this game is the Rorschacht test, and your personality is revealed.
This game gets a lot of things right, and a must buy if you are an HO fan.
This is an older CE hidden object game. It has a bonus chapter, wallpapers, multiple soundtracks , and concept art, but that's it. As a CE version, not a good value for what is expected these days (morphing objects, collectibles in each scene of main game, achievements/achievement room, extra puzzles, etc).
The artwork is decent, but not awesome.
There are many HO junk pile scenes, if you enjoy those. At least 10% of objects are hard to find, being small or well hidden. There are interactions, but nothing innovative or exceptional. This is one of the few games in which I had to use Hint to find.
Most actions are easy to figure out, and I played on medium mode, so had a good game flow.
The story is easy to follow and pretty good. It's a fairytale/legend theme, so not gloomy and dark.
The artwork is nice, but not high definition, and thus, looks dated (like watching analog TV in age of HDTVs).
Bonus chapter is not that long.
I would recommend this game if you really love HOS or you buy on sale. Otherwise, I think there are much better values and better crafted games out there.
I don't recommend this game.

Dreampath: The Two Kingdoms
Your sister, the Queen, has fallen deathly ill. Now you must travel to a faraway kingdom to find the cure.
This is a tale of two kingdoms, one good, one dark, symbolized by a silver and gold dragon. You are guided through the game by a cat who sounds like a sage old man (think Karate Kid old man mentor, but dressed in half tuxedo?) and narrates the background story for the plot.
Has a very good game flow (when played with helpful messages). Fairly long game. Mini games are not too hard, and I was proud of myself for playing all puzzles without help or hint or skip button.
I would recommend playing with helpful messages because you are traversing at least 5 areas and going back and forth to areas encountered at beginning of game, and if you consult the map, it will give a clue as to which areas have actions/tasks. Otherwise, you will be wandering around aimlessly clicking on areas for actions.
I wish the graphics had been high definition. It is a serious mistake to NOT have high definition graphics, and this game will look very old school a few years from now, even though animation and VOs are standard quality for now.
Bought this game because of playing Family Lies, which I loved, but this game is a disappointment in comparison. The artwork is nice, but it's BLURRY and INDISTINCT. Ruins it for me.
The animals you're trying to rescue are certainly cute and periodically you find food for your pet in your journey . In the lower left, your menagerie icon will blink and glow, which means your pet needs to be fed, and as a reward, you receive an item that allows you to progress. OK, cute, but it seems contrived and doesn't really fit into overall story very well.
I might have enjoyed this game more had I played with helpful messages (hardest mode) , but hint & skip still allowed. It is a bit of a challenge on this mode. I wandered around quite a bit.
Would have given 4 stars had the artwork been high definition. If you're not too picky about graphics and play on casual to intermediate mode, it's a perfectly fine game.
The artwork is enchantingly beautiful and a delight to wander through this HO fairytale adventure to rescue the prince, Cinderella and the fairy godmother. Has a good balance of actions and HOS. Mini games are easy, but figuring out actions to take are either ambiguous or challenging.
This game has the BEST map I've encountered in an HO game. The map is as beautiful as the artwork for the game itself, spots clearly marked and when you hover over an exclamation point, it has a thumbnail of the spot and tells exactly what needs to be done--very helpful and fun to use.
I like that the artwork is high definition, clear, crisp, bright, colorful and not dreary. Characters are attractive and realistic looking. the lip movement and voiceover is not well synced, but not a big deal for me.
There are collectibles of a sort in this SE game--a photo album created by taking photos of beasts and creatures encountered throughout the game. When you hover over an object and see a camera icon, pop out your camera and take a picture. Not sure what the reward is--I captured half of what I was supposed to, so may have to play again to see,
The ending is a little bit abrupt, but the final battle is waged by the good vs evil fairy, so you just sit back and enjoy instead of shoot =em mini game.
A fun game to play. Highly recommend if you're into good artwork.
