This is a long game, for sure, but a bit frustrating to play in intermediate mode, in which Hint and Skip allowed, but NO HELPFUL MESSAGES and Map feature is cryptic.
I felt like I was in the wilderness and had lost my compass. Had to use the Hint button a lot, and skipped several mini games.
At points, the story line became more discernible and enjoyable, but for the most part, the tasks to perform as you progress in your journey are not that obvious.
I guess if you enjoy hard games, this one's for you. The artwork is just OK for me and on the simplistic side, but it does take place in Scotland, which is not a common locale for most HO games.
There are imaginative parts to the game that is refreshing, but I didn't enjoy the game as much because I felt as if the devs were withholding clues to make it more challenging for people.
Who pays $50 to take a tour of a haunted mansion to get spooked? Not me, but you can get your thrills playing this fun HO game.
The house is haunted, but not too scary (no blood, no dead bodies), and you will come out alive if you play it right.
The visuals are good, even appealing given that it's a haunted house. The actors seem a bit amateur, but definitely relatable.
The game is fairly long, most mini games are easy, and there is a happy ending.
I recommend playing with Map that tells you where actions are available, otherwise, it makes for a really long game. Without the teleporting map, I'd be exhausted, as you jump from 1st floor to basement to 2nd floor, and there are doors everywhere---it's enough to give you vertigo.
I loved the cinematics and visuals of this game! It is very well done and a fun HO adventure game.
You play a paranormal detective investigating the Heart estate, along with your father and assistant Jessie.
Inevitably your father & Jessie get disabled, so it's up to you to save the day. There are floating objects all around you as you proceed through the mansion and unravel the entanglements of the Heart estate. Don't forget to use your paranormal activity machine when it glows brightly in the lower left corner, which signals using the machine to find a particular object in the scene and communicate with a lost soul who provides clues to the next task to proceed in your journey.
This is a fairly long game. The mini puzzles are not too hard, and you will not get bogged down by too many HOS.
I am really impressed by the visuals of this game, which is excellent--highly detailed, beautifully rendered, with lots to look at. Unfortunately the beautiful lady pictured on the cover of the game is not seen at all in the game, but she makes a nice cover girl.
This game deserves better reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The cinematics are excellent, voiceovers are good, well drawn characters, and most tasks are logical. It's not a very hard game (for experienced Fishies), but great for newbies to this genre. The storyline isn't terribly original, but it does feature a female protagonist who is a surgeon and saves the day. The game has a good flow and can be completed in a few hours (of fun). Enjoy!
The story follows Alice, daughter of Belle & Pierre, as she fights the Queen of Red Hearts, who is not as she seems. This is a story of love, betrayal, deceit, and redemption.
The bonus chapter is better than the main story, with better graphics and storyline. The Gears owl helper reminds me of R2D2 in Star Wars, and there is a Yoda-like character encountered in the bonus chapter, which unfortunately is too short.
Collectibles are Art Deco style cards hidden in each scene encountered. There isn't a counter to keep track of number of cards found, but you can go back to any scene where you missed the card in the 1st place at the end of main story, to find and complete the jigsaw puzzle.
You also go on a Treasure Hunt for items by going back to each scene and finding one item pictured in the lower left corner. This opens access to the Red Heart Casino where you play games like solitaire, fork lift, shoot em games etc. This aspect didn't excite me too much.
Overall, it is a good game, but not as GREAT as The Beauty Within. Sometimes you can be victim to your own success.
I don't usually buy CE unless it provides great value, and this CE version is a FANTASTIC VALUE.
The storyline is good, well developed, and well thought out. It is appropos to the game title.
Collectibles are roses, one in each scene encountered, and there is a rose counter at the lower left to help you keep track. There are more roses to collect in the bonus chapter, and at the end, each rose represents a jigsaw puzzle piece that reveals The Truth behind the Rose.
Then there is a Trophy case where you go back to each scene and find another collectible item pictured at the lower left corner.
There are three books to open at the end of the Bonus chapter, loosely based on famous myths and legends such as Ali Baba and the Thieves cave, etc, which are opened by completing the Rose jigsaw puzzle and finding all collectibles and completing the 1st 2 books to open up the 3rd book.
This game is structured like a matryoska doll, one doll hides another, just like one key opens up another book to another tale and mini HO game within a game.
The graphics, visuals, characters, voiceovers are all well done and convincing.
Mini games are easy to mildly challenging.
The game is quite long, but fun. This is one of the few games in which the Bonus material matches, or is better than, the the main game. Well done, Mad Head Games.
You play a detective investigating a fire at a posh girls' school, Wilford Hall, that resulted in one girl being seriously injured (Ellie) and another girl being seriously spooked. The overall story arc fits completely with the "Spirit of Revenge" theme.
The graphics are excellent and appropos of a wealthy, New England or British boarding school for the elite.
Tasks to accomplish are intuitive and easy to figure out. Mini games are not too hard--I only had to consult the walkthrough once (solar system).
There are 4 modes of play, but Hint & Skip are allowed even in Hard mode.
The game isn't very long, because connecting the dots isn't that hard. That said, I felt positively BRILLIANT as a sleuther at completion of the game. I had great fun with this game.
The storyline is above average for the usual HOS adventure game, with a very surprising twist at the end, and a set up for a sequel.
I loved the graphics for this game. The characters are well drawn, with colorful but beautiful regal clothing. Voiceovers are very good and match the characters drawn.
I played with minimal hints, and struggled a bit with the tasks to accomplish. You think you are done with finding objects in a particular area, and nope, using the hint button, it says go back to area you thought you had scoured thoroughly. Some of the mini games were also challenging, but the overall story is what makes this game a stand-out.
I have to say, these HO games are great for feminists--most of the protagonists are females rescuing males and not the other way around, as found in most movies, novels, etc. out there. Love it!
What drew me to this game was the graphics. The Solitaire is the usual. Your goal is to recreate the Elven kingdom, and you play multiple levels of Solitaire to gather enough points to rebuild. Each rebuilding is prefaced by a jigsaw puzzle that reveals the new building.
Then you play multiple solitaire levels in order to find fragments of relics (hidden under cards) that power up your solitaire levels. At the end, there is a display case showcasing the relics found.
There's quite a few beautifully drawn graphics illustrating the Elven kingdom as you play solitaire. The music is soothing, and the graphics really make this game for me. It's a great way to unwind playing this game.
Sadly, there is no screensaver capability at the end of the game.
This game was a disappointment. The 1st half of the game is really lonely as you wander around a deserted hotel without encountering a single soul. Then when you encounter people, they talk quite a bit. Even the letters you uncover in your quest are long winded.
The graphics are good, but the HOS are standard issue. Mini games are mostly easy. And there is no pizazz or special effects to make it snazzy and make you go, "Cool!"
The plot seems contrived, completely unoriginal, and just is not very engaging in making you want to see what happens next.
I found it hard work to get to the end, but it did get a little bit better as you got to the end. You will have to try yourself to see if it's your cup of tea.
