I'm in the minority as I prefer the first, original Go Go Gourmet. What I dislike most about Chef of the Year is that the food items are in the same place throughout each location. And only rarely are new food items added (and everything else is still in the same place). Some ppl like this feature but it made the game ridiculously easy and repetitive, IMO. Because you only make maybe 4 different dishes in each round, so if you go fast, you repeat those again and again and knowing where everything is...well, it's too easy.
I did like that the food items were larger and easier to see, and also re-spawned quicker than in the original game. (In the original game, I was sometimes too fast for the re-spawning of the food).
I turned off the music so cannot comment, and I skipped the story (don't care about that). I"m glad it gives the option to skip.
This is a fun, mostly relaxing game; it never gets too insanely fast/crazy like almost all other TM games do (which I really dislike). It's colorful, and I enjoy cooking games.
If you like the Go Go Gourmets, find Burger Island and Burger Island 2. They're similar and such a blast.
I found this by accident on the BF site and remembered I used to have it on a now-defunct pc--it's an old game. Simple, cartoon interface and concept. But it's SO much fun, and addicting. Match-three w/ a twist. You have to catch the falling donuts, put them in the case to create matches so they disappear. Beware the burnt donuts! Those go in the trashcan. Bonus rounds include separating trash from recyclables. Can't comment on the music as I turn that off. The sound effects are cute, fitting (i.e., burning donuts sizzle), and not annoying. Digby stands beside you and makes cute silly comments between rounds. It starts easy but it quickly ramps up! There's donuts with multipliers, and my favorite--orders--where you have to put the right donuts in the order slot. Ding!ding! Order up!
I tend to prefer older games--sometimes older, simpler is better. This is a charming fun game if you like this type. Definitely try the demo--it's a small download.
Don't remember when I bought this, but I just played the entire thing (5/17/2024). I won't go into details that other reviewers have covered; those reviews are very helpful, by the way, as I never would have noticed the rather-poorly-done morphing objects, or known about the map showing them. (Can't see them at all; just hover cursor around the scene til it turns into a hand). I found the story silly; and I skipped most of the character dialog (boring). Skipped a few puzzles but others were easy and fun. HO scenes were enjoyable. Graphics were nicely done and clear. The biggest impact this game had on me was the overt 'stealing' of MCF 13th Skull puzzles, etc. Remember the thing w/ the basin full of water and junk, and you had to move the stuff around to find what you need? Yea, they stole that. Remember the fountain puzzle at the beginning of MCF 13th Skull? They stole that. Remember moving the goblets on the shelf into the correct positions? Yup. They stole that too. And others, I can't remember. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness", says Oscar Wilde. True enough, because now I have a hankering to play the utterly brilliant MCF 13th Skull!
Tried this game again yesterday (5/11/24) and what in the world was I thinking that I ever bought this!!? (Maybe my mother did, lol, as we shared games years ago.)
I turned off the music. The sound control covers all other sound including ambient and voiceovers. I like sound effects but often turn off ambient noise. The footsteps, etc were good BUT the constant LOUD thunder, then constant LOUD churchbells (and I do mean Constant) was giving me a headache immediately. Also the voiceovers were horrid--the usual generic, awful voices. I also found the hidden object scenes lame, and the evidence board thing was a ridiculous gimmick, IMO. [I'm glad that others liked it though.] I stopped playing and uninstalled this mess about 10 mins in. Absolutely not recommended if you can't stand annoying repetitive background sounds and voiceovers, but would still like to hear SOME sounds. Oh and I might have hit a glitch--I found one of the heads for the church door puzzle, but it wouldn't let me access my inventory to put it on the puzzle.
I try just about every solitaire game. The ORIGINAL Fairway Solitaire has always been my all-time favorite. I also really love Lapland Solitaire, and Avalon Legends II.
But this one!! WOW!!! I got the CE for a very low price (otherwise I wouldn't buy a CE solitaire game). The main plus of the CE is you get an extra 'land' (50 levels I think).
The developers have done almost EVERYTHING right...other reviews have mentioned those things but here's a few-- --STUNNING and I do mean STUNNING card/board graphics. The detail is amazing. Even the spider is beautiful lol. Cards are gorgeous--several backs to choose from. One minor negative is only 1 front, but I didn't mind that. --Some REALLY COOL effects like the "walls" (I think that's what they are) where you get a hammer card and it zaps walls off the cards. Very cool. Also love the lantern dispelling the fog, and the torch making the spider go away. (Even a small detail here--you don't kill the spider, you just scare him off. I like that.) --Layouts are not upside down, etc (hate that) and there's always enough cards to finish a layout. --Cards do not duplicate, triplicate, ad nauseum (i.e., when there's 5 Queens on the tableau, and you keep turning over Queens...doesn't happen in this game, thankfully). --Story is silly, cute, and engaging. --BIG PLUS--Ambient sound can be turned off! YAY! I don't play w/ music or ambient sound but I do play w/ card sounds. Sound effects are very pleasant, satisfying and useful (i.e., there's a sound as well as a card that shakes, when you miss a move). --I really enjoyed using the "mana" to put scenes together. Cute. --3 modes. One is timed which means you get 8 seconds each time you turn over a card, if you don't make your move, it turns over another card. Clever, and a good challenge. The Easy mode uses 2 decks (I have not tried that). --The layouts get harder and more complicated as the game progresses which is great fun. It is ALWAYS possible to finish all levels. --Excellent shop! You have to THINK and PLAN for what you buy, as at first they seem expensive but eventually you can buy everything and then buy jokers to finish levels. But it takes quite a while to get to that point; it's fun and satisfying.
The one huge glaring NEGATIVE is there are moving backgrounds, which are completely unnecessary and extremely annoying. I cannot tolerate them at all due to vertigo issues; it makes some 'lands' in the game very unpleasant to play. I ended up taping paper on my monitor to cover the moving trees in the desert scene (the worst one). Please, please, please, NO waving, moving, nausea-inducing backgrounds!
Otherwise this game truly is a masterpiece. Dreamland Solitaire Dragon Fury is almost as good (but has even more moving backgrounds), and the original Dreamland Solitaire is also great--although ambient sound can't be turned off in those 2. All 3 are similar but Dark Prophesy is the best IMO because the developers listened and really polished the game. Absolutely recommended if you want a gorgeous, challenging, but satisfying on every level solitaire experience!!
I did 3 pictures during the demo and that was enough. This gave me a headache. I just didn't care for it. But I do agree w/ other reviewers that it's well made and the pictures are pretty.
If you have any of The Revills other solitaire games, you'll find this one is very similar. They take the same game mechanics and change the 'skin'. Like Ember Knight solitaire and some others, this one has the duels (in this case, you throw cupcakes at jelly animals). All levels have various locks on the cards such as a milkshake, a cookie, a mess that has to be cleaned up. There's usually at least one 'steaming' card that has to be played twice.
There's a lot of powerups to buy and at first you have to be choosy what you get to play smart but by around the 14th or 15th chunk of levels, I've usually managed to buy all of them that are helpful (there's 20 overall chunks of levels, w/ 10 layouts in each chunk). It's much easier to get 4 stars of all levels w/ all the powerups esp the ones that provide a wild card or facsimile.
As another reviewer stated, it's impossible to make card chains (long drives) in this game because there's too many locks in every level. It gets tedious.
There are a lot of card backs to choose from, and some special cursors that are cute. They offer about 4 sets of card fronts but they are lazy offers--i.e., one choice is sweet food items on white background, one choice is the same food items on a light blue background, one choice is the same food items on a light pink background (just lazy imo).
I don't play w/ the music on. The sound effects are lame and again, lazy..always the same sound effect for just about everything.
I've been playing in the up/down (golf solitaire) mode in casual. This does offer other modes like regular and hard, as well as a match 2 and addup to 14 (or something like that) mode. I played the match 2 mode in Ember Knight solitaire. As mentioned, this game is pretty much an exact replica of that one w/ a different theme.
This developer has gotten lazy, churning out solitaire games w/out much thought to adding anything new. I loved Home Run Solitaire which was one of their first ones I bought, and although I do still buy some of their games, they really do not measure up to some of the much better solitare games I have.
I recommend this game if you love Ember Knight solitaire, etc and want another one pretty much just like it, but otherwise I don't recommend it as you can't make long drives which is always fun. There are much better solitaire games out there. This one is just ok IMO.
If this worked, I'd give it 4 stars. But it's extremely buggy. So many glitches like sound cutting out during combos, missing necessary items, etc. You end up having to finish levels w/out doing the best you could, due to missing acorns on blocked cards, etc. Some of the dog abilities don't work right either, some of the time.
However, it's a unique game, and it's cute. There is a learning curve to figure out how to get the dog's abilities working, but once you figure it out it's fun.
It's your basic golf solitaire which I do enjoy. It's got a vibe like the original Fairway Solitaire, but no narrators...narrators would be a wonderful addition to this game! The sound effects are ok. I can't comment on the music as I turn that off. There are a ton of levels so that's good.
There's no choice of card design and I wish there was as the numbers on the cards are small and hard to see when I lean back to relax and play. A choice of decks is pretty standard nowadays in solitaire games so I'm not sure why they slacked on that. In general it's almost like the game wasn't quite finished and polished before they released it. W/ some tweaks and fixes it would be a great solitaire game, but alas, it is what it is.
Due to all the bugs in the game, I cannot recommend it UNLESS you have a free credit or a good sale. Because it is fun, and different, but a bit frustrating w things cutting out and going wrong much of the time. Still playable, but be aware.
I bought this, and almost regret it. I liked the battle element in the demo. But then I played Shadowhand (by Grey Alien Games) and now THERE is a great solitaire battle game!! Going from that back to Ember Knight Solitaire I realized how lame and limited this one is.
I have several The Revills games (i.e., Homerun Solitaire) and this is pretty much the same thing w/ a different theme. Sound effects are the same. I don't have music on so can't comment. Same game mechanics (find x number of whatevers (in this case, blue badges or something) to pass the round. Same blocked card gimmicks (use a key to unlock a chest, use a hammer to break a stone plate, etc). Usually more than 1 on each hand--in some cases impossible to pass the level w/out replying MANY times due to their being too many locks in the level and not enough cards. (I played in Normal mode. There is a Casual mode and a harder mode too.) (I also played the usual golf (one up one down) version, 2 other types of solitaire can be chosen instead.)
Also as others have stated, the powerup shop is expensive and there's a lot of non-very-useful items.
I found the minigames intrusive and annoying, so I turned them off.
Overall the game is blah. Try Shadowhand if you like the battle solitaire idea and you will be hooked.
The full screen option doesn't fit my monitor, it squeezes the cards (which I hate, can't play like that). Other option is windowed mode which makes everything too small to play comfortably as I like to recline against my couch back when I play solitaire.
I have this developer's Home Run Solitaire, which I like, and this one is very similar, even has same sound effects. I didn't play the demo long enough to get to the 'battle'. I was bored w/ it and don't like that it won't fit full screen correctly.
For those who can view it correctly, I'd recommend it, but if you have other solitaire games from The Revills, they're all pretty much the same.
