This game is fantastic in terms of gameplay. You have 3 kinds of hidden object scenes in all rooms. The first one is putting back items you find in other rooms, the second is a yard sale kind of like the gardenscapes games and three you have finding X amount of one item like 15 bears etc. I found that because there was so many different aspects to this game that I never got bored! It doesn't hurt that I am absolutely crazy about games like this. You can play timed or relaxed. I chose relaxed since my mouse was a bit wonky.
The best part of this game though is building the dream hotel. When you get there, it isn't really the beach side inn of your dreams but you can fix it up especially because it has themed rooms and you get 3 choices each costing a little more than the one before it to fix it up. You go through all 4 seasons so you get to see it dressed up in a bunch of different ways. I was able to change many of my decisions but still had more than enough money at the end of the game where I didn't have to keep playing to buy everything.
The only issues I had with this game were the graphics and the custom cursor. The graphics were a little outdated so some things were kind of hard to spot. Also because some things in the room move or make noises, it became kind of hard to concentrate but I like challenges so it was ok. The main issue for me was the custom cursor. I could not play the game at all with it on because it was crazy slow. I am playing this on a Mac OS 10.6.8 so it could have been that but its always been slow even when that OS was brand new back in the day. Turning off the custom cursor helped immensely and the game ran pretty smoothly like that. There are some games that when you remove the custom cursor, it really kills certain parts of the game BUT this is not one of those games. You don't miss anything by taking it away. It did lag sometimes still when updating the hotel/yard BUT it was manageable.
I loved this game and I recommend it to people who enjoy games like GardenScapes, Barn Yard etc or just fixing up a house or what not. I found I was very pleased with the way my hotel turned out and you can even name it too! I named mine Zen Garden because looking at it made me wish I knew a place just like it that I could go for the weekend. I wish there was another one as the ending hinted that there could be but seeing how old this game is, I really doubt it. Kudos for such a delightful game.
This game is sooo fun and I love that there are way more in this series. I just hope that one day we will see them for mac users as this was the last one released...But I digress.
The sequel is very much like the first in terms of gameplay but in this one, one of the new things to do are planting and picking flowers. My oh my did they make me hate flowers. I usually am a stickler for getting gold in these games but I was happy to get through with just finishing some of these levels in the time allocated. IF you run out of time, you have to start all over, no advancing which is a little annoying. There are a lot of levels requiring you to move numerous rocks that take A LOT of gold and strategizing is very important as a lot of these levels don't have warehouses so you can only have 20 of each item at a time...when a rock costs between 12 and 17 golds and you can only hold 20.. well lets just say its a bit of challenge.
I seem to love the snow levels for whatever reason although I hate that you have to hunt polar bears but its the game so its no different than playing The Oregon Trail and hunting for food. Wow that was a blast from the past game if I ever mentioned one. The achievements do not tell you what you are trying to get but once you get one, it goes bronze, silver, gold depending on how many of each you do like collecting resources or taming snakes. The game is set up where you will collect all of them in at least bronze or silver. I got gold in a lot of them but there were several ones that I did not and I am okay with that.
The only downside to this game is that you can't link tasks to people so you have to wait for them to run back to your hut. Also, when you have a lot of locations to build, it can be tricky to figure out which one to do first. However at the time this came out, most games didn't include linking tasks so for its time, this was a very inventive game.
I recommend this game as I love a good strategizing puzzle and this isn't just a click fest, there is a lot of thought you need to put into it at times. I will probably go back and try to get gold on some of my silver times but I felt good with the progress I made and I enjoyed playing it which is what counts! In this sequel, there were little mini games inbetween levels that I do not remember seeing in the first edition and I quite liked them but they can be skipped if you want to, you just will not get the achievement for it.
This game has voiceovers to tell the story and the story line is very good but can be skipped if you don't like all that filler stuff.
I consider myself an expert when it comes to hidden object games and adventure but for builder & match 3, I am definitely just intermediate.
I loved the first one in this series but this one missed the mark in my opinion. Its such a disappointment too because Eipix are great developers but the demo was very deceiving and had I known the kind of game I was getting, I don't know that I would have gotten the collector's or standard edition. Let me say I am not a person who gets offended by game story lines as Im open minded and it seems like either people didn't care about the theme or didn't get that far in their reviews or maybe they focused more on the gameplay but I really thought the story ruined this game.
It starts off with you and your brother unpacking the house and getting things in order after the last ordeal when a general arrives at your house claiming he needs the iris, the last part of the projector that you guys just happened to keep to remind you of your father (REALLY?), because someone is after it and its not safe anymore and you guys believe him and give him the iris and then set off for the barracks to assess the situation. However, once you get there, things aren't what they seem. There is a special feature that gives you two rooms for the price of one which I thought was a really cool concept kind of like the Secrets of the Dark series with the opening and closing of the shades. This is what made me buy the game as I found this feature to be quite interesting and it made the game seem to have lots of depth and character. What the demo failed to show though was the fact the story line has to do with Pearl Harbor and although it wasn't mentioned, the general basically was a Hitler type figure wanting to start a war and only have some people still there blah blah blah. I play games to get away from the horrible things in life and although I was not alive when Pearl Harbor happened or really have any ties to military or war besides my gramma serving in world war II, I really really did not like where this game went in terms of story line. It went to a dark place when the first one had nothing to do with pearl harbor, hitler or any other kind of big real dramatic problem. These are real world dramatic issues unlike a fun loving game so once the game went to this place, I lost interest and it was very hard for me to finish this game.
A lot of the achievements were incredibly hard to get. I thought I had gotten them but they never appeared but there are a lot of collectibles and I was able to get all of them. But finding clovers, kites, morphs and film reels while listening to audio tapes about how this general guy has gone over the edge due to losing his son during pearl harbor really killed what could have been a good game. It started good, it had dramatic moments and beautiful cutscenes, fun mini games and hidden object scenes where you had a choice of playing match 3. While Im searching for these clovers, I am listening to tapes about how he's going to make a new world, only some are allowed, a war of the worlds, a domination of everyone. And Im very turned off by this game because of it. Had no actual war been mentioned, I would have been okay with it. I would have preferred the developers to make up something fictional instead of using something so horrific thats all.
The main game had a proper ending. There is a cool feature in the extras where you get to see their offices and make coffee and talk to one of the lead producers of this game. I felt bad not liking his game after hearing him explain things and there will be a 3rd one according to him which I hope will be better than this one. I like how these developers have "making of" or videos like this that introduce themselves and let you have a peek of how these games are made and how much work they put into them. It showed how the lead producer was also the actors and with the technologies they have, he was able to morph his face into a woman and play her part too! The way it was shown was very interesting. Its amazing what technology today can do.
I attempted to play the bonus game but once the main game was over, I just couldn't bear to keep playing. Im not trying to be overly sensitive but story lines like this are for the history channel not games that are supposed to be relaxing and take your mind away from the world's problems.
I give this 3 stars as there are some very good cutscenes, mini games and hidden object scenes. The overall beauty of this game is intact as far as scenery goes. In the hardest mode they took away black bar hints which I really enjoyed. Besides the story line though, my other pet peeve was that this game seemed to be all over the place therefore I could never figure out what to do next and I never have that problem. The map had pictures of the film reels in the button if you hadn't found them in the scene yet which I liked but there is no choice on the hardest mode to have the map show you where to go so because its so disjointed, I found myself using the hint button a lot. There were a lot of times that the game would lead me back to the beginning of the game to do a hidden object scene again even though I hadn't been there forever and would have never thought to have to go all the way back. I know a lot of games make you go back and forth but most games don't make you go back a certain point once you get so far into a game. This one did just the opposite and it made it really confusing.
I just am not a fan of this game. I know some love it and I see the appeal but I just can't get over the story and the disjointed feeling of the game. It wasn't for me.
When I first started playing this, my initial reaction was...why the heck did I buy this? Its been awhile since I purchased it and starting off it doesn't look all that spectacular but about 20 minutes into it and I remembered the appeal. Although a familiar tale of evil coming to an island, its actually a very unique twist on it. There are all kinds of weird people like half deer half human, an octopus that talks to you, people who should be dead but aren't, talking whales etc. This is a game that could have been cutesy BUT the developers made it scary instead and thats the overall appeal. Weird characters but an overall creepy feeling each time you find more about the story or go into different rooms.
There are 10+ chapters, 25 creatures to find, bonus chapter & 80 whale bones which are a lot harder than I thought they'd be since you can't use hints on them. The whale bones are in the extras and after you are all done with the game, you go back in and find all the bones to put the whale to rest. I tried using hints and it said that this is a special challenge where hints aren't allowed. Luckily though the strategy guide shows you where each one is in case you get stuck. I missed ONE and when I saw it, it was HUGE in the middle of the floor...like how'd I miss that? Throughout the game you have morphing creatures which can be very hard to spot as well. There are achievements, the normal fare like not skipping any puzzles or hidden object scenes etc.
I found that most of the mini games were pretty easy to do although some were a bit harder. The hidden object games are really fun as most items are interactive not to mention sometimes you have to find X amount of things or 4 shells, 4 roses, 4 hammers and they are behind some things and interactive as well. I enjoyed the hidden object scenes so much, I wish there had been more.
Bonus chapter is not very long BUT shows how this mess happened in the first place. I wouldn't say its necessary to the story but it was nice to see how it all happened especially since everything was so weird. This game however, is VERY long. I finished it in 2 days because I was addicted and couldn't stop playing but Id say I put in about 7+ hours into this which is a great length. There are so many extras that it makes the collector's edition very appealing. I have no doubts about buying it.
I definitely recommend this game. The voiceovers were impeccable, dialogue flowed without having to click continue. My only big pet peeve was that the inventory box didn't lock because I personally hate it bobbing but I got over it for such a creative and well told story. I don't own the first small town terrors, as I remember it came out as a standard edition awhile ago and I didn't quite care for it but these developers learned from their mistakes and were able to make this incredibly well done game. I quite enjoyed myself and its very rare I give the 5 stars out but this is a game that definitely deserves some hype. Kudos developers! I hope to see more!
Games like this remind me why I fell in love with hidden object games to begin with. I wish more games were like this.
The best part of this game is there are collectible horseshoes in the standard edition that you can buy things in your office with and the challenge of the hidden object scenes because some of those things are blended in a little too well! And it had VERY well done voiceovers. Bravo!
Other than those three things though, I found this game to be very boring. There is no map but one is not needed because every chapter is a new game basically so there is no need for back and forth among a lot of locations. Things also get blocked off so you know you don't have to go back to other locations. There are 5 chapters that I felt dragged on forever but I have to say this game was pretty short, just felt long because I was bored.
The hidden object scenes are list and also show you the item and you find it. The show item one was hard because even though you could see what you were looking for, they were behind other things and I liked this challenge. However the mini games were not original and were quite easy, never had to use my brain for those.
The story line used the sleepy hollow plot but the game was far from the actual story line of the actual story. That is fine by me BUT I love sleepy hollow in general and this could have been sooo much more inventive but it just fell short. In each chapter you get all new inventory items so there is not much challenge. Everything I got, I played within a few moments of picking it up.
There are 2 difficulty modes and expert has sparkles on mini games and hidden object scenes. I like relaxing games so this didn't bother me however this game just dragged on forever and the ending was BAM! and its over. I felt like I had a conclusion but I felt quite unsatisfied with the abruptness and wished I had known the overall outcome of the game if that makes sense.
For beginners, people who don't like back and forth or want a relaxing kind of game, this one is for you. Although the hidden object scenes were rather hard to find at times, I really would have liked harder puzzles on expert level as well as no sparkles on anything.
I recommend this game because it has collectibles but had it not...I don't know that I would...there's just nothing too "special" about it.
This is a very relaxing game although there is a timed mode for those who like fast paced. It is an older type of game in the fact that there is not much story except for the overall theme of scrap-booking and mostly just list of items to find throughout the store. The items you find range from buttons, stamps, scrapbook pages, newspaper etc. Some of the items are quite tiny but thats what the magnifying glass is for! Usually I do not like magnifying glasses but this one is done quite well and goes over the entire area and is easy to use. Double clicking turns it on so no need to even leave the spot you are looking. There are unlimited hints although I really found they were not necessary.
At the end of each chapter, there is a scrapbook page for you to complete. Part of it is things you must find the object for BUT you can choose to stay on the page and add more to the scrapbook for extra stars. This doesn't change the game just adds a little something extra for those who love the scrapbook part. Each chapter has 3 places to search and there were a lot of chapters. Each object scene also includes a "riddle" item that will give you a description and then you must find it. Most are very easy.
I generally played this game at night before bed for a relaxing wind down feel. It took many weeks playing a little each night. I really enjoyed this little gem. Games like this are a bit old school but even though not up to par with todays big ticket games, still can be quite fun for the right person.
I recommend this game to scrapbookers, people who love old school hidden object scenes, beginners or those just looking for a relaxing game. I'd definitely say demo first since its old, it may not work on all platforms the way it was intended when first came out. I only wish this developer had made a sequel. Kudos!
For me, this is one of the best games I have ever played. Its relaxing but challenging but not pull your hair out hard. There are 6 different packs of puzzles each a different material the puzzle is made of. For example there are fabric, paper, metal etc and they make the appropriate sounds to make it sound like it should. If you play 20 rounds of FEVER which is a fast play mode against the clock, then you get a bonus pack which is a mixture of all materials. There is a bonus bonus pack that has puzzles from different games like Drawn, BFG logo and others.
The game can be challenging at times if you are trying to get the 3 stars. One star is for finishing it and it advances you to the next puzzle. One star is for completing the puzzle without making any mistakes or dropping a piece. One star is for finishing the puzzle under 2 minutes. These are not mandatory but do give it a harder element for those who like a challenge. All the packs except the bonus ones are open from the beginning though so if you get stuck in the wood one, you can switch over to the metal and be able to do that pack.
All the sounds can be turned down or off as well as the music. I found the music relaxing but would generally play this game on windowed mode while watching crime tv shows on the computer. I could listen to the show but also play the puzzles without being super confused like in some games.
There are a lot of levels and it kept me busy for a long time. its definitely worth the money or a free credit. I wish there were more games like this to be honest as it was a fresh breath of air to have something so unique being offered. I cannot wait for more! There were only 2 levels I could not get all 3 stars on but I am okay with that because the overall experience of this game was worth 10 stars and I loved every minute of it and am sad its over. Please make another one!!!
First of all this game has an actual ending in the standard version that does justice to the game so thank you developers for not short changing us. Secondly, this delightful game is by Elefun and I for one really, really enjoy the games they provide for us.
Let me also say, I usually buy collector's editions but I decided not to for this one for whatever reasoning I can't seem to remember and I have realized that I enjoyed this game more than ever because it had no distractions. There are no tiny coins to find or some weird morphing birds. So as much as I love the extras, it was nice to see a game for the actual storyline and not just extras.
That being said, I really enjoyed this game. I remember the first one because at the time it was a new concept bringing live actors into games and they did it quite well although I am glad they got rid of the live actors in this game because I thought the last game didn't have a lot of flow and it was sometimes hung up on dialogue but this one flowed great and had lovely voiceovers that really matched each character.
I came across a lot of puzzles that involved switching items around or putting all the red beads into the red area etc and I found them quite enjoyable. There were no repeat of games which I enjoyed and the hidden object scenes were interactive. You also have a choice of playing a matching game instead of the hidden object ones which is nice since you play all hidden object scenes at least twice. Nice to have a mixer upper. The difficulty is customizable but I would have liked an option to turn off black bars because they were a little too helpful at times and I like a good challenge.
I see there is now a 3rd one out in this series and I for one am very curious to see where it will take us. This story line is very well done for a story about witches. Its actually quite realistic for what it is. I really like the main heroine that you play and also lynn who is the typical teenager but also a witch so those two things meddle well together.
I will definitely be purchasing more standard editions because it was sooo nice to not be distracted and able to concentrate on the story and get hints when I needed or skips instead of being penalized and not getting the achievements. I could actually focus and a good game DOESNT need all that extra fluff to be an excellent game.
I recommend and even though it does give a brief recap of what happened in the prior one, I really recommend playing them in order.
I give this game a 3.5 but Im rounding up because its BLAM games! and I love them as developers. They have some of the most original games I have ever played and I am a big fan. Having said that, I sooo wish I had played more than 15 minutes of this game before purchasing it. I knew going into it that there was a fog changing people into weird things like tree trunks or beasts. For instance a cat turns into a tiger, a man to a tree, a couple to some kind of weird bench like thing. However, I am so over the cutesy animals and beasts, having to name things like the dragon in this one, having a pet that helps you (raccoon) and all the rest of the cutesy things. If I had played this game further than the 15 minutes, I can't say I would have purchased this game as a collector's edition but I did so next time I will know to be more careful.
Although the fog theme has been done before, I did enjoy most of this game. The main game has a complete and satisfying ending so there is no need for the bonus game. The main game is pretty long, took me about 6 hours give or take. There are lots of collectibles which really blend in so they were fun to search for. Also, there are achievements HOWEVER they do NOT tell you what they are sooo thats a real guessing game. I get they do not want to spoil the plot but maybe then the ones that are moving the plot should be a secret but the rest of them should be open so we know what to do. Because of the fact you have no idea what they are, I missed a lot of them.
The map was a nice touch. I like how even though I chose a hard difficulty level, I could make the map available throughout the game with it showing me where I needed to be. I only used it when I was stuck and that way I didn't need hint or skip. Hidden Objects were interactive as usual, no black bar tips in harder levels which I appreciate! Although there were some silhouette hidden object scenes in the beginning, there were not a lot more throughout the game. I liked most of the puzzles, felt they were unique and liked doing them.
My issues with this game besides the hidden achievements and the cutesy creatures are that for some reason I just couldn't get into this game. Maybe it was the reasons I mentioned above, maybe it was the overall feel of the game. I didn't care about the fog or the people I was saving and this took me many weeks to get through due to the fact I was so bored. I know this is a good game, a great game in fact which is why my rating is so high but for me personally, I could have lived without it.
The bonus chapter was about another fog that swept the lands and how you conquer it once and for all except you did that in the main game so Im not sure what the point of the bonus was except to be a filler. I did not finish the bonus chapter as I found it quite repetitive and boring. I really really enjoyed Fierce Tales-Marcus Memory by Blam games and gave it 5 stars plus a spot in the top games of 2013 in my opinion BUT this one is definitely lacking in some way that I just can't put my finger on. I think it was the abundance of cutesy creatures. I just am so over that theme and I wish that developers would go back to darker themes instead of fairy tale princess cutesy animals you name and dress up and there is a beastiary in the extras but you can't access it til after you get all the creatures and they go into the bonus game so I never saw it but I didn't care either. I just was so glad it was over and next time I will definitely test drive a game more than 15 minutes because cutesy things seem to be the new trend and Im really not a fan of it. Enough is enough.
Do I recommend this game? Yes because although I didn't care for it, I know most people will enjoy it especially the people still in love with the cutesy stuff. Like I said, I know its a good, well made, beautiful game, it just didn't keep my interest...
Although the servants do go back to the house before they take the next item in order, I REALLY REALLY enjoyed this game. You can link in order but unless the item is on one of the item buttons, they will always go back to the house first. I found this more fast paced though then most of the other games like this and I know people hate to always have to go back to the house but it did not bother me at all because their pace was good.
The best part of this game would have to be hercules himself because it adds a different aspect to builder games. He has servants but if something really heavy needs to be lifted, then he will appear and a green hercules symbol will appear around the object in question. This game doesn't have a lot of objectives but they are long levels. Basically to complete ONE thing like "move the pointer", you have to go across the entire game board or you won't have enough coins or supplies. In the later levels, it becomes harder and harder to get the supplies and you really need to rely on the cornucopia to boost your intake along with the storage facility.
I liked the music in this game. I felt like it gave it an adventurous vibe that other games in this genre don't have. It never took itself too seriously and I loved how there were different creatures houses you built and they took care of certain bad guys for you. Instead of just regular people like an army, I could call on medusa, cyclops, pegasus and a 3 headed dog I can't remember the name of. I really felt this made the game unique.
My biggest pet peeve about this game was the fact that nowhere in the game can you ever build a gold mine. Instead you had to rely on little buttons that took about a minute or more to turn blue and then the item would appear. There were farms, storage and wood to build throughout the game but I really felt the gold aspect was lacking because like I said you need to boost your intake or you literally wait and wait for the buttons to turn blue. This was the only thing that really bothered me though and once you learn how to get a lot of product then it becomes easier to collect but a mine would have made more sense.
There are achievements that are spread out around the board and once you get them, they turn into a cute animal or fruit or cute addition to the board which I liked. There were some that I felt were impossible to get. At no time could I ever get 5 people in my house and since the house can only build up to 3 people, even using the powerup of an extra servant didn't help with this feat. I also could not get the 4 guys to run faster because the level you'd be able to do that on, has a glitch and only registers the house being upgraded twice when you actually have done it 3 times and would have the 4th guy. So i did miss a few but I really enjoyed the ones I was able to get and I liked having those missions on top of the regular ones.
Note to users. There is a relaxed mode and a challenge mode. Usually relaxed mode means there is no timer so I chose challenge mode and then could not understand why I could hardly get gold until I started over on a relaxed profile and realized that relaxed IS timed. Its just kind of slow and gives you way more room to mess up. You also can get achievements on this level and I did way better on relaxed so I do recommend you try both to see where you are.
The originality of this game and the music really immersed me in this game. I haven't played a builder game in a long time that I actually LOVE and I was really sad when this ended. I wish it had been longer but I definitely recommend this game and can only hope for another one sometime soon.
