Your mother has been missing since last Christmas and you and your father are too sad. You get a message from your mother, so this year you go to find her. You meet a sorceress, Queen Winter, Father Christmas, swans, and goblins. Not everyone is helpful. Lots of puzzles, some of which I skipped. I liked the music and the color is great. It is somewhat a worn plot, someone has hidden the Christmas magic and you need to help save Christmas, but the methodology is a bit different. A good Christmas game.
I liked the storyline with Mombi (if you have read the books you know who she is) trying to ruin the first Christmas in Oz. Your standard characters are there: Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsman, the Lion, Glinda, a flying monkey, and random Munchkins. Dorothy (you) come to Oz to rescue Christmas when all the presents are stolen. I skipped a bunch of puzzles because I got frustrated or the game froze. It was a nice idea but I don't think it was executed as good as it could have been.
This time they win a cruise to the North Pole - not geographically possible even with global warming. The locations are pretty familiar anyway. I enjoy these and even played ALL of them this Christmas season but this one is a bit disappointing. It has all you expect from playing games 1-9 with recognizable locations and characters. I did find a bit of challenge with a couple new puzzles but that was about it. The CE options were disappointing - replay certain locations but then you are back in the regular game? I don't think the CE is worth the extra $.
Based on test only but I thought it was fine. The music changes for the HO location, e.g. chants for the church and opera for the opera house. Each chapter requires going to multiple locations that are identified, interacting with the person there, finding HO's by name, shape, or multiples of a single item (fleur de lis, as an example), then doing a simple puzzle - matching, jigsaw, swapping pieces to complete. I do agree with other reviewers in questioning why is this considered a CE. There were no morphs, souvenirs, or whatever extra to find. One hint is to select an HO left to right across the screen as characters sometimes recommend a different location but that's not necessary. I wonder if it gets harder as you go along.
I didn't think it was quite so bad as other reviewers. Yes, the music is irritating but after a while I could almost ignore it. You have ten levels to "solve" ranging from easy to hard, although the difference is hard is more cluttered and you will have to find multiples of the same thing. The good part, for me, was the need to distinguish items overlapping each other of very similar colors - candies, ghosts, spiders, bats, pumpkins, cauldrons, potions - are very close (brown spider & bat together, for example). Even so, I'll probably wait until it is on sale.
The match girl is the focus and the "villainess" - sort of. As is common, she has to learn the error of her ways and you must show her, but first she leads you on a chase through her magic garden. Who needs to be rescued? Sometimes it's you. This was somewhat disappointing and the first time I skipped a puzzle due to unclear instructions even using the strategy guide. Not as strong as other Dark Parables, to my mind. It is really a 3.5 but I rated down, not rounded up. If you are a fan of Dark Parables, it's worth a look but I probably won't play this one again.
If you like puzzles, then this is a game for you and you may select the easy or hard option to play them. Puzzles are not my favorite part. Decent map that jumps is helpful. Since you are a healer, you must stop to heal various characters who will then help you in return. I got pretty good at that part but it seemed to slow the progress of the game a bit. The plot was fine but the ending was a bit abrupt when the dark dragon was defeated.
I am familiar with two of the three detectives in this game so that made the third one more difficult for me. You switch between them to take advantage of each one's particular skills. The puzzles were pretty good although I skipped a couple random-type puzzles which are not my favorite. I enjoyed the HO's with shadow outlines of items. Some were extra hidden, so that was good for me. I liked the use of the original detectives' locations to bring their skills to the forefront. I did wonder about the end and what the long-term effects will be but can't say more without a major spoiler. I'll definitely play again. and have already purchased the second one.
Your partner is the lead but you seem to do most of the work. Many locations and a good map. Only skipped one puzzle since it's a type I dislike, but completed all the rest without difficulty. I used the guide about an average amount for me - only when I really got stuck or too tired in late evening to want to figure it out on my own. It's a fairly typical mystery but you have lots of clues and possible suspects so plenty to do. I enjoy this type of game and only object to the pace, pretty much the lead's "I'll stay here and you go do x" so you get to find all the clues and put them together so the lead can jump to conclusions. The leap to conclusions is my primary complaint with the game. Secondary problem was the developers needed at least one English speaking reviewer of the text. You are asked to "isolate" the wires when you need to "insulate" them, as an example. Watch out for other incorrect words, particularly in HOs.
I enjoyed the other Lagoona games but I felt this one was weaker than the earlier ones. Most money for making needed repairs are earned in the arcade. You need to find or earn tokens to enter the arcade. Quests are a major source of tokens but I ran out of quests way before I had enough money. All the familiar puzzles are in the arcade and you need to complete many, many of them to earn enough to fix everything. I did have leftover tokens in the end and I did get better at a couple puzzles that are not favorites of mine by the time i had played harder and harder levels of those puzzles.. I've played the other two of the series multiple times because I enjoy the humor and the characters; not so sure I will want to repeat this one. Try it and decide for yourself.
