Welcome to the Katz family factory one that was founded by Wilhelm Katz and now run by his wealthy and eccentric daughter Victoria. Recently the factory has been beset by strange occurrences so this is where we come in.
The game begins with a very nice introduction with a voiceover that seems to hold promise for what lies ahead. As soon as the introduction is over that is the end of the voiceovers and from that point on there is only written dialogue. One of my favorite reviewers equates the introductory narration as a sort of bedtime story. Hmmm, I think that bedtime story should have been “twinkle, twinkle little star” because it doesn’t take long before we are deluged by a shower of sparkles that are more like an array of stars. The bad news is that the settings for the game are so minimal there is no option to turn off the sparkles. In fact the only options are for sound settings and two options for playing the game. After I entered my name and selected my gameplay option I should have gone no further but I at least wanted to see more of what the game offered.
I have said many times that I am a true HOG fan but after playing the demo for this game I need to qualify that statement by noting that I love to play HO games where at least there is a reasonable probability of finding the items. Yeesh, playing this game was almost worse than a trip to the dentist. Even in the days when almost all HO games had numerous junkpiles to sort through, I doubt I found one where the items were so difficult to spot. One of the issues with this game is that every scene is the same variation of gold, brown, and grey tones with ornate backgrounds that make the items even more difficult to spot. I rarely use the hint button in an HO scene but in this game the only way to complete the scene was to use the hint and then wait an extremely long time for it to recharge so it could be used again. I chewed through the demo time in only three HO scenes because the items were almost invisible.
When I play a HOPA or HO game, I do so for the entertainment value. I generally enjoy hunting for objects, yes, even in junkpiles but I at least expect a high probability of finding the objects. Thank goodness I chose the easy setting for the game because had I not done so, the time for the demo would have expired before I made it through the first two HO scenes. Maybe there are those gamers out there who love finding monotone, miniscule items in a game but I’m not one of them.
If you enjoy a game that would have you ripping your eyelashes out then perhaps you will enjoy Factory Katz but since I want to keep my eyelashes and fingernails intact this game will definitely be a pass for me. Happy gaming!
I'm not sure how I missed this game because I generally play every HOPA game released here at BFG. Ashley Clark Secret of the Ruby is a great game particularly if you, like me are very tired of the newer cookie-cutter games. The game is what I refer to as minimalist in that there is not a lot of hand-holding or other glitzy features. There is no custom mode but you can select for four game modes and find one that will suit the way you like to play.
Secret of the Ruby is a rather refreshing game since you have to use your brain to figure out how to proceed. Of course if you are stuck, there is the hint button.
Ashley Clark is a detective out to solve a series of kidnappings and who suddenly finds herself in a dungeon in the past. Now Ashley must find the link to the kidnappings and return to her own time.
I happened to really like the game and can heartily recommend it to those who are new to playing HOPA games or to those of you who happen to be bored with the now common cookie-cutter games. The puzzles are a challenge and great fun to solve but be sure to bring along a boat load of patience - lol. Even though I love the game, please try the demo to see is Ashley Clark Secret of the Ruby is the right game for you. Happy Gaming!
Secrets of Magic 3: Happy Halloween is right on time for that spook-tacular time of year. After rescuing her parents in the last adventure, Victoria is now a teacher at the school where she learned her magic abilities. Since Halloween is approaching Victoria has been given the task to decorate the school, since she isn’t very good at it, she needs our help! Jump in and save the day for Victoria in this fun new Match-3 game that is perfect for the season.
The graphics in Happy Halloween are perfect as we approach the big day. They are colorful and crystal clear. Although there are no voice overs, there is written dialog to help you. Three modes of gameplay are available – Relaxed (unlimited moves), Challenge (limited moves), and timed (beat the clock). Not only are there three modes of gameplay we then can choose Casual (with less obstacles and more power-ups) or Expert (with more obstacles and less power-ups). With so many choices I am sure that gamers will be sure to find the one that meets their needs. As we play through the levels we will collect gold coins. Each level has several goals to achieve such as matching a specific number of various types of tiles. You will need to destroy fences, and then bring items to the bottom of the board in order to complete the level. If you are new to playing Match-3 games I would recommend that you choose the Relaxed, Casual mode to begin and then you can move on to something a bit more challenging when you are ready to step up the pace.
Although Match 3 types of games are not my favorite, I do find that when I want a change of pace from playing my beloved HOPA games, Match-3 games will fit the bill. I have found several that I love and this new Secrets of Magic game is perfect for the season and for that fill-in game. I love this little game and it is so much fun that the time flew by and I had to drag myself away so that I could at least look a little productive this morning. Even though I had to buy the game, please try the demo to see if Secrets of Magic 3: Happy Halloween is a game you will enjoy as well. Happy Gaming!
Fear for Sale the Curse of Whitefall is the tenth game in the series and as always you play the game as Emma Roberts an investigative journalist for Fear for Sale magazine. This time around Emma has been called to Alaska to investigate ghost sightings at the construction site for a new hotel. With all of her experience, surely she will be able to save the day!
The game includes most of the bells and whistles that we expect to find in HOPA games here at BFG, but that being said I am a bit dismayed that a developer who is a favorite of mine is apparently a bit behind the times when it comes to keeping up with the newer technology. I dislike the delay between scenes where I get a black screen and a message that states “loading”. I have seen other gamers complain about this same issue so I am hoping that it will be fixed in the near future as I happen to find the delay very annoying and as a result will not purchase the game.
There are 22 HOP scenes in the game I happen to think the HOP scenes are excellent and find them far more enjoyable than the puzzles. There are more puzzles than HOPS with 28 puzzles with most of them being quite easy. In fact the trend now is for easy breezy puzzles with most of them seeming to simply be thrown in probably because the specs from BFG require a certain amount of puzzles in each game.
If you prefer the CE version of a game this one includes a lot of extra content with 20 collectibles and 33 morphing objects to spot throughout the game. As in other Fear for Sale games you have different ranks to earn based on your achievements and this game has a whopping 128 to earn. Other collectibles are the standard fare with Wallpapers, Concept Art, Music, Strategy Guide, and Bonus Game
I love games from this developer and own all of the games in the Fear for Sale series. Most of the early games are excellent but as is the case with these endless sequels each new game seems far worse than the previous games. Of the early games in the series Nightmare Cinema remains my favorite. I mentioned above that I will not buy this game because of what I believe is a technical issue but even then I am not persuaded that the story is anything different from every other new game that I play at BFG. As much as I love HOPA games I am really becoming very tired of cookie-cutter games that are nothing more than an exercise in boredom. Unless the developers can come up with something fresh, I might be reaching the end of my love affair with HOPA games. For those of you who are new to playing HOPA games, I am certain that you will find the game more to your liking. As always, please try the demo to see if Fear for Sale the Curse of Whitefall is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!!
Grandma is back with game number seven in the Whispered Secrets series – Forgotten Sins. How exciting! You and your friend Carol have been invited by your former college professor, Dr. Lomonosov to visit the excavation site of an ancient city that has recently been discovered near Agora. As soon as you arrive at the hotel where you are staying, a young woman races into the lobby asking for your help just before she collapses. It turns out that Emma is a collector of rare antiquities and when she revives she asks you to help her identify the strange parcel she is holding. Well, this is your first big mistake and only the beginning of your trouble-filled adventure because when you open the parcel you find that it contains a cube that is a powerful artifact called the Cube of Sins. I don’t want to give away more of the story because it will be far more fun if you discover it for yourself as you play the full game or even further into the demo. Let’s just say there is lots of excitement ahead.
The graphics are very colorful and although at times they seem washed out some scenes are very vivid. At first the graphics did seem a bit cartoonish but as I played the game I enjoyed the overall visual effect. I am a gamer who always plays with the sound on and I love the Middle Eastern style of music in the soundtrack. Your tools include an interactive map that you find very early in the game. Other tools include the mysterious box that Emma gives you ( will let you discover its use for yourself), and as in other games in the Whispered Secrets series you will have pictures or photos that help you identify hidden areas in some scenes.
The HOPs are varied in style and some are well-designed so they don’t seem like the same old scenes. Early in the game there is a HOP where we gather herbs and it took me a minute to figure out how to place some items. I found the scenes better than those in some recent games and very enjoyable. The puzzles seem to be very easy but maybe that is because I play so many HOPA games that I am familiar with how to solve them. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the puzzles as well because sometimes I prefer the easier puzzles to those that require a brain-drain. For those of you who aren’t as familiar with the puzzles this developer offers either a “Casual” or “Hard” setting on some puzzles. I wish more developers would offer this setting so that gamers who are not into the puzzles and generally skip them might be enticed to actually give them a try.
The CE version of the game includes 74 collectible crystals hidden in the scenes. There is a pop out box on the top right side of each scene that will indicate how many crystals are to be found in that particular scene. Yes, there are achievements to earn but I couldn’t figure out exactly how many there are available. Other extras include 10 – Wallpapers, a Workshop that has 10 concept art scenes, 8 Music Tracks, Replay of Movies, Replay of HOPs and Mini-games, a 61-page Strategy Guide, a Bonus Chapter and a Hidden Chapter. With seven chapters plus the two bonus chapters the game might be a bit longer.
What I love about this game is the overall visual appeal and the soundtrack. Those two things always increase my enjoyment of a game and the mystique of the Middle East is very appealing. The downside of the game for me is that we have yet another evil spirit that is eager to take over the body of someone and wreak havoc. Even though I am really very tired of this trend or theme in HOPA games the end result was more than I expected. So even though the theme is rather worn out, I still found the game very enjoyable. Since we all have different things we like in gaming I always recommend that you try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
Anna Grey is back in yet another of the never-ending installments of the Grey family saga or the antics of their children in this case. Anna receives an urgent call from her nephew Brandon asking for her help because his son Billy has gone missing from the Evergreen Boarding School along with his school friend Sarah. When Anna rushes to the school she finds there has been a fire that has destroyed portions of the school but thankfully the children were evacuated, with the exception of Billy and Sarah who are still missing. Will you be able to solve yet another mysterious case and save Billy and his friend from the White Lady?
The technical aspects of the game are in line with those of other games from this developer, but the graphics are really very cartoonish with the exception of Richard who is well illustrated. As I played the game I kept feeling like I was in the pages of a comic book. Aside from the graphics that really put me off, the sound and voiceovers are generally okay. The game offers the custom mode with hints and skips that can be set in a range of 15 to 90 seconds as well as other options to set up the gameplay as you wish. There is an interactive map and you have a helper in the form of your dear old dad, Richard, or at least his skull to tag along on your inventory bar.
The HOPS offered a variety of interactive scenes including list, silhouette, and matching types. The HOPS are interesting and sometimes items seem difficult to spot but the scenes are actually very good. Yes, the puzzles again are familiar but some have a different twist. The puzzles in the early part of the game are easy but there is some challenge ahead. Although some seasoned players might find the puzzles very easy, overall I found them to be quite entertaining and fun to play.
If you prefer the CE version of a game, this one includes two collectibles and morphing objects to find, achievements to earn and the other expected extras this developer includes in its CE games such as the Secret Room, replay of HOPS and Puzzles, a 40-page Strategy Guide, and the Bonus Chapter.
Grim Tales: The White Lady is game number thirteen in this series. Honestly, I thought I had lost all interest in the Grey family storyline but I found that I rather enjoyed playing the full game. Yes, I dislike having Richard’s Skull tag along and really wish he would go away but he was helpful at times. In the end Grim Tales the White Lady turned out to be more than I expected and it was a nice surprise. I enjoyed the gameplay and the overall game was much more entertaining than I expected. As always, I recommend that you try the demo to see if The White Lady is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
Marriage is off to a wild start for newlyweds Sybil and Nigel. The old adage of “beware of strangers bearing gifts” should apply when Sybil receives a gift from a stranger telling her it is a gift is from one of Nigel’s friends. Inside the package is a portrait of Sybil that is indeed “special” but certainly not in a good way. As Sybil takes the portrait in her hands she is overcome and quickly begins a transformation that is sure to unleash the beast within. Who would do such a thing to a kind and lovely young bride? As you play this new game in the Dark Romance series, the Monster Within, you will discover the answer to that question and even more as you find out who is behind this betrayal of friendship.
If you are like me and happen to love the Dark Romance series I think that you will find the Monster Within to be a game that you too will enjoy. Yes, for some, the storyline might seem nonsensical but I love the way the developer uses both characters to tell the story using a back and forth interaction between the lovers. Again there are many who love to analyze a game but I am such a game addict that for me unless a game is horribly dark, I play simply for the joy of playing each game that comes my way.
The graphics are beautiful and excellent as is expected from this developer. There is a custom mode available and the interactive map. There is an option on the map that you can click that will then show when a scene has collectibles not yet found. You also will find your father’s amulet that will grant you a useful power. Again, I don’t like to give away all of the details of a game because discovery is the most fun. A unique feature from this developer is the inclusion of little circles on the inventory bar that will be open or closed to show when there are collectibles or morphing objects to find in a scene.
The Monster Within has an equal distribution of 19 HOPS and 19 Mini-games. IMHO, the HOPS are very creative and interactive but if you would rather not hunt for objects, there is a Match-3 game. Some of the HOPS do have mini-games included and the one in the first scene is fun. There is good variety in the style of HOPS included in the game with silhouette, list, and storybook types to keep you entertained. The mini-games or puzzles are a lot of fun and many are included in the HOPS as well. The mini-games are familiar but that is not a big deal to me. This developer offers a choice between Easy and Hard when you play a mini-game, with Hard being the default. If you get stuck you can always reset the mini-game by selecting Easy.
If you prefer the CE version of a game this one includes 6 Chapters plus a Bonus Chapter and a 50-Page Strategy Guide. There are Morphing Objects, Collectible Brushes, and Paintings to find. Of course we have Achievements to earn, all with creative names. Other extras include Wallpapers, Concept Art, Music, Movies, and a Menagerie. IMHO, this developer always adds a lot of extra content making the CE version a great value.
Since I am a huge fan of fairy tales (I kept several of my favorite collections from childhood) and I love the Dark Romance series. I am a romantic at heart so I really want to bring Nigel and Sybil the happy ending they need to live happily ever after. Even though the game was an instant buy for me, I recommend that you try the demo to see if Dark Romance the Monster Within is a game you will enjoy. Other games in the series include Vampire in Love, Heart of the Beast, the Swan Sonata, Kingdom of Death, Curse of Bluebeard, Romeo and Juliet. Happy Gaming!
Detective you have been hired by Richard Rives, the Mayor of Mudcreek City, to investigate and hopefully put an end to a reign of horror that is sweeping his city and somehow he feels that he is involved. His wife Rosalind has disappeared and since he worships her he needs to have her back whatever the cost. Well, maybe . . .
Well, after I get to Richard’s estate and fight off an attacker, I think the game continued to go downhill. The dialogue is absolutely corny and even worse than that is the fact that when I do something a huge red flag flops down to congratulate me. Why would a developer even begin to think that an adult gamer would need a big happy red flag and a big trumpet ta da to pat them on the back for earning an achievement? Come on, this is simply ridiculous.
Between the descent into darkness of a series I once loved and now the incredulous turn this latest Puppet Show game has taken, I think that when I see the name AMAX I will run away as fast as I can. I am absolutely done with this developer. I thought the game might possibly be decent but it is an absolute joke. The storyline is so confusing that I had no idea what I should be doing.
There might be something different with the HOPS but I want more in a game than an odd HOP or even a few puzzles. I think someone on the development team lost their marbles when this is what they came up with. Why don’t you just bury, burn, shoot or whatever it is you do to get rid of this series because it really has now reached the bottom of the barrel.
Sorry guys, maybe I should have not bothered to write this review but it is a sad day when I have to let this developer know that they are now an abysmal failure at developing decent games. Adios!!!
In A Stranger’s Venom, the second game in the Enchanted Kingdom series you again play the game as the “Honored Healer.” In the game’s lead-in cutscene a beautiful young dancer, Clarissa Stark, is accused of using dark magic and then being thrown out of the Imperium Dance Theater by its manager Domenico. Fast forward twenty years, and as a reward for your valued service Dr. Klein has invited you to attend the dress rehearsal for tomorrow’s performance at the dance theater. Of course when you arrive at the theater things are not going well for Domenico and you must quickly jump into action to save him and to ward off the attack by the very angry young woman who attacked him. Why did Amber attack Domenico and where did she go? As you play the game you will discover the answer to those questions.
The game has the clear and colorful graphics that are signature to this developer who uses beautiful hand-dawn artwork. Your tools include an interactive map, and a task book that also includes notes. As in the first Enchanted Kingdom game, your special tool is the Healer’s Box that will allow you to diagnose and treat specific ailments
The HOPS are mostly the list type with some minimal interaction required. There are other scenes as well such as the storybook and silhouetted items types. I prefer the list type but the game does have something for everyone. I happen to enjoy the HOPS mainly because the items are not so miniscule that they are difficult to find. If you would rather not find items in the HOPS you can choose instead to play an alternate Match-3 game.
The game has an equal number of HOP scenes and Mini-games. There are plenty of mini-games and I like the fact that we can select either an easy or a hard setting when we solve a puzzle. Some of the mini-games are very creative and some I have seen before but they are all fun to solve. The option to choose your specific setting in a puzzle allows even those gamers who don’t care for puzzles to at least give them a try before hitting the skip button.
The CE content is fairly standard but in A Stranger’s Venom we have collectible statuettes and crystals as well as morphing flowers to find in various scenes. Something I like about games from this developer is that the user interface area includes circles attached to the inventory bar that will indicate if there are certain collectibles and/or morphing objects to be found in a scene. And yes, there are those inevitable achievements to earn. I don’t know about you but aside from being obsessed with finding all the collectibles and morphing objects, I never worry about earning the achievements. Other extras include the standard fare such as Wallpapers, Artwork, Movies, Soundtracks, replay of HOPS and Puzzles, an Imperium Library, a Bonus Game, and the Strategy Guide.
I love almost all games from this developer and since I enjoyed the first Enchanted Kingdom game, this one is a definite addition to my gaming collection. I know I dislike the interminable series that we get game after game BUT after trying the demo, a Stranger’s Venom appears to be even better than the first game in the series. Although there were a few things that seemed really silly when I started the game, I still enjoyed finding objects, diagnosing patients and mixing potions to be a lot of fun. All in all this is a game that I highly recommend. Even though it is a perfect game for me, please try the demo to see if Enchanted Kingdom: a Stranger’s Venom is a game you will enjoy.
Match Ventures is another terrific matching game from Playcademy that is much like Silver Tale and Runefall. The game mechanics will be very familiar to those who are fans of Silver Tale. Match Ventures is another epic game where we this time are in league with a leprechaun and his pack of dwarves. As the story begins we learn the tale of the Kingdom of Socaria and the battle that leveled Cliffmont Castle. Many have tried to enter the castle to plunder any riches that might have been left behind when the castle fell and many have failed. Now you, brave explorer have joined forces with a leprechaun and will endeavor to succeed.
Match 3 games are games that I only play when I find one that is complex and offers a lot of challenge and that is why I love the games from this developer. I am an addict of Silver Tale and it is my go to game when I become bored with the HOPA games, which is quite often recently. So if you have played Silver Tale you will be very familiar with the game style and mechanics. There are some differences as you will also sometimes face an opponent who you must battle to earn extra rewards. There are also puzzles included but they do seem a bit easier than the ones in Silver Tale or Runefall but I have only completed a small portion of the game. The game has excellent graphics AND a huge plus, IMHO, is that the developer has fixed the technical issues with setting up the game options.
As I mentioned earlier Match Ventures is set up very much the same as Silver Tale where there are different boards in each level, with each board needing a special item to unlock it. Various items are used to unlock a board such as a key, a crowbar, planks, etc. As you play you will earn gold bars and various power ups that are used to help you progress through the game similar to those used in the other two games I mentioned.
As soon as I downloaded Match Ventures and realized that it is another game very similar to Runefall and Silver Tale I purchased it immediately. Now I know I will have weeks ahead that will be filled with fun as I explore and rebuild Cliffmont Castle. Happy gaming!
