Our time-traveling heroine of the Griffin Order, Sarah Pennington, is back in this third installment of The Secret Order series. After her recent missions to travel back in time to stop the Order’s arch enemy the Dragon Clan from wreaking havoc, the Order decided to ban all time travel and to destroy all time-travel machines. Now, Sarah is looking forward to a well-deserved vacation but before she can even dream of relaxing on sunny beaches, her BFF Julie calls with some very exciting news. When Sarah and Julie were in high school they were obsessed with stories of the Buried Kingdom and now, after years of research, Julie thinks she has finally found it. Sharing Julie’s excitement, you decide to pay her a visit and that is when you discover that you and Julie are not the only ones interested in the Buried Kingdom. On your way to Julie’s home your call with her is interrupted as you witness her kidnap. Will you arrive in time to save Julie? As you plunge into the depths of this new mystery and work to save Julie, you begin to think that maybe the Order’s move to destroy the time machines might have been a bit too hasty.
The game tools include an interactive transporter type map is present at the beginning of the game. You will find Julie’s Amulet, a magical dragon eye, that when charged with energy will allow you to see visions of past events. Then there is Droi, a little dragon who can use his fiery breath to light fires and help you retrieve items that are out of reach. I don’t mind pet helpers as much as some gamers but there was a time when they showed up in every game and that did become a bit much. Of course being a huge fan of dragons, I am quite happy to have my purple little friend tag along as I play.
The HOPS are varied and include the storybook type where you must find the item that is capitalized, the progressive-interactive type where you find one item and use it somewhere else until you eventually complete the scene, the standard list type and even a FROG thrown in for good measure. The mini-games were not too difficult but there was one during the demo that took a bit of time to figure out. Even though there was nothing really different or too earth shaking in either the puzzles or the mini-games, I still found them very enjoyable. In the HOPS the items were not so well hidden that I couldn’t find them nor were any of the mini-games so difficult that they were frustrating.
I LOVE this game! Yes, it is not a mind-blowing challenge but I don’t always need that. What I like is that the gameplay is entertaining and the storyline is very good. The excellent and colorful graphics create a wonderful fantasy world with interesting characters (some not so nice) and, of course, there are dragons. Even though The Buried Kingdom is my kind of game, please try the demo to see if it is one you will enjoy.
After the first couple of excellent games the Dark Dimensions series started going downhill with Blade Master being the worst one yet. The storyline is tailored to those who have been clamoring for what they consider gritty games. I love almost all HOPA games but this one is abominable. It starts off gratuitously violent in an attempt to sell games in a series that should have long ago met its demise. I don’t need fantasy games all of the time but give me a great suspense game with some jump-scare moments to round out the mix, not one that is part of the new rash of games that often drip blood or are a bit too violent for my tastes. I play HOPA games to relax and take me away from the ugliness and violence that is present in our world today so I certainly don’t want it portrayed in a game.
Give me a break – cartoonish and flat graphics are just part of a mixed bag. Sometime the characters are realistic and at others seem like they are flat and laughable. Throw in poor voiceovers and this game becomes even worse. One of the great things about the game is that if you like to set your own difficulty, there is a very good custom game mode available.
Your tools include an interactive map and the Blade Master’s Box that holds magic knives.
The HOPS are excellent and even at times unique but even those don’t make up for the lack of taste in the storyline. Unfortunately, this is probably only the second HOPA CE I won’t add to my gaming library so I didn’t play long enough to experience more than a couple of HOPS or even the mini games that seem to be excellent.
The CE has the usual bag of goodies that we normally find in these games.
This is undoubtedly my shortest review and even though I try to be objective, there is not a lot I care to say about this game. I think the storyline is tasteless and obviously not one I like. Many gamers will love this one and if you do please enjoy but I am one of many who will most likely not care for the storyline or the violence in the game. I see too much of that in real life so I choose to not relive it in a game. Even though I can’t recommend the game and will definitely not purchase it, I suggest you try the demo to see if this Dark Dimension is one you want to enter.
Your first day on the job could turn out to be a brutal one – at least this is what it seems like. In this newest game in the Grim Façade series you are the new detective in town and have been tasked with investigating the latest murder in a recent string of killings perpetrated supposedly by someone dubbed as Bloody Stanley. A local man has been convicted of the murders but he’s on death row awaiting execution and the police captain is beginning to wonder if they have the wrong man in custody. Jump into this new Grim Façade to find the killer and help save an innocent man from meeting an untimely end.
Everything about this five-star game is top quality from the graphics to the sound package. One thing I like is that in the custom level the hint and skip buttons work independently.
As with the other Grim Façade games you will find coins to be used to purchase needed items from the local street vendor. Dare I even mention the word pet helper? Even though he isn’t a pet helper, that scraggly cat with attitude – Death – is back and, in this case, he is a welcome addition to the game.
The HOPS are excellent, varied, and interactive. IMHO, these are some of the best HOPS from this developer who seems to have recaptured some of the creativity that once had it as the leader in casual games. I enjoyed the first HOP that is interactive and quite a bit of fun. The mini-games are excellent and some of them required a bit of thought to solve. My favorite is the very first mini that involves placing various shaped tokens into a panel according to shape. It is not difficult but it is tricky as you can easily get stuck. All in all I am impressed by both the HOPS and the mini-games.
I Enjoyed this game and purchased it almost immediately. The storyline is interesting and before the demo ended I had seen enough to know that this is a great addition the Grim Façade series and is even better than some of the older games. Even though I am not a “cat person” there is something about the scraggy and beat-up feline that I like. IMHO, this is a very good game that took me some time to complete. Please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy as well.
Hallucinations - seeing people change before your eyes: are you crazy? You are definitely worried as you seek the help of a therapist. Well at least you think he is a therapist until he then turns into a maniac with an axe. This is definitely not a normal day! You soon realize that you may have stepped through a looking glass and have one foot in your world and one in another. You play the game as Cindy but why do people keep calling you Cinderella? Travel between two worlds – one real and one a fairy tale land as you try to stop the evil huntsman who is on a rampage.
The graphics are terrific but sometimes cartoonish as they create a wonderful fairy tale world. I happen to love games from this developer and this new spin on the Surface series shows a new level of creativity. Your tools include an interactive map that is very helpful and shows where you have collectibles to find as well as where there are things to do. When you click on the map icon you will also find a journal that is a tool I love to have on hand. One of the best things about this game is that it is NOT loaded with video cut scenes that chew up a lot of space on the hard drive.
The HOPS are excellent and very creative. The mammoth has finally stepped out of the box and is now providing some HOPS that are sure to entertain even the most seasoned HOPA game players who have seen it all – over and over again. The first HOP is one where you will match pairs/types of items to begin a very interactive silhouette scene that is so well-crafted that it becomes part of the storyline. Finally, a game with no searching through a suitcase to find a key! There is a good variety in the HOPS with some being more interactive than others but all of them are terrific.
The puzzles are the WOW factor in Surface Lost Tales. If you read my reviews you know I love the puzzles or mini-games that are included in HOPA games and those I encountered during the demo were terrific. The first mini-game was very easy matching type where we move dolls to the correct position. The next one was not so easy for me although others will find it simple – a manual dexterity game where I had to drive my car while avoiding obstacles in the road. I know we have all seen this type of manual dexterity puzzle before but this one was a bit challenging because of speed changes. If this had been real life I would be in the hospital because I kept crashing – LOL. All of the puzzles are excellent and even though many were quite easy there were others that presented a lot of challenge.
The CE version has lots of extras and does include finding flowers that are the signature of the Surface games. Other items include collectible statues, morphing objects, achievements, replay of HOPS and mini-games, music, wallpapers, concept art, bonus chapter and the strategy guide.
Surface Lost Tales is an awesome game! No one does fairy tales better than the mammoth team and, IMHO, with Lost Tales they have revived the Surface series. At least for me, this is one of the best games in the series with a storyline that is different and entertaining. I love everything about this game and for me it is perfect even though it might not be for everyone. I have always loved fairy tales and some of my fondest memories from childhood were having them read to me as bedtime stories, so Lost Tales is a game that is perfect for me as I am sure it will be for many others. Even though I love this game, please try the demo to see if it awakens the child in you and that you will enjoy it as much as I do.
Midnight Calling Jeronimo is a great game and one that I happen to like. Okay, it is not for everyone but hey, I am a hopeless HOPA junkie and truly enjoy almost all of the games that come my way with only a few that I ever happen to dislike. Jeronimo is one of those games that you will either love or hate and I happen to fall into the love it group.
As the game begins Jeronimo a retired rascal and thief turned respected innkeeper is telling a story from his past to a traveler. We play the game as Jeronimo so we get to relive the tale as it is told. The tale Jeronimo relates is of a harrowing trip to the forest to find ingredients for a potion to heal his dying young sister. Of course the trip is full of danger because only the forest witch has the potion and now we must steal it. Play this fun game full of adventure and magical creatures to see if it is one you will enjoy.
The graphics are excellent but some scenes have a lot of blue. Most of the scenes though are excellent and I found the graphics to be quite crisp and clear. The game offers a custom setting with hints and skips that can be customized within a range of 10 – 90 seconds.
This is where the game will get iffy for some gamers because we do have animal helpers. I didn’t mind them because they fit well into the game's theme and they did prove useful. I found them easy to use and it only required a click or two of the mouse to get them off the interface to complete their tasks. In the CE version of the game we collect coins that can be used to purchase food items for our pets. There is an interactive map present right from the beginning of the game.
The HOPS include a variety of styles and while some items might be hard to spot because they are smallish, I had no trouble finding any of them. My least favorite style of HOP is finding items by silhouette and there are several of those but since the silhouettes are excellent they were easy to complete. The mini-games are plentiful and some are easy while some are a bit challenging. I guess the challenge level depends on how good you are at solving the minis. Some gamers will be better at them than others and I fall into the category of someone who loves the minis but sometimes finds them difficult. The ones I dislike the most are those manual dexterity ones that bore me. All in all, there is something for everyone in this game.
The CE version of the game includes finding several sets of tarot cards as well as the coins mentioned above. There are morphing objects to find and achievements to earn. The game includes a secret room that is a bonus I happen to enjoy, and then there is the store where we purchase food for our critters. The remaining extras are fairly standard with wallpapers, concept artwork, bonus chapter and the strategy guide.
As I mentioned above, this is one of those games that you will either love or hate. Over the years I have played so many HOPA games that I can’t even count them so it is no surprise to me that the stories are often carbon copies. Yes we have an evil witch to deal with but the developer has been very creative in the way the story is told. I found it entertaining and one that held my interest even though it got off to a slow start. As I played through the demo I began to enjoy the game more and by the end, I knew this is a game that would be perfect for me. As always, even though I love this game, please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy.
In The New Order, you are an agent for the Curio Society and this time you are matching wits with Frederick, a scientist who has perfected a potion to rid people of their emotions – good and bad. Not only is Frederick intent on ridding the world of emotions he has enlisted the aid of your nemesis Susanna who was expelled from the Curio Society for her traitorous acts. Susanna has a score to settle and Frederick offers her the perfect opportunity to wreak havoc for the society. Can you even imagine what it would be like to live in a world of no emotions, where you felt no love or joy? You will need to act fast and use your brain to prevent this outrage from happening; one that could possible change the course of history.
The game offers a custom mode but, IMHO, it is rather useless. The graphics are excellent but the voice acting is flat because the game depicts an emotionless society with rather robotic people. As you move through the game you do meet more interesting characters who have avoided becoming emotionless. You have an interactive transporter type map that at times is very helpful.
The HOP scenes are very good and most of them are quite interactive. Most scenes rely on finding items by silhouette but the silhouettes are good so it is easy to determine what item should be found. For those of you who would rather not search for items there is a match 3 option included in each scene. Even though the HOPS are good the puzzles are almost too easy with very little challenge required to solve them.
The Curio Society games have never been ones that thrill me so I was very surprised that the game was as great as it turned out. I gave the game a mediocre rating and a less than glowing review when the CE was released but in a moment of weakness I ended up purchasing the game. Wow, it is so much better than I suspected and is without a doubt the best one of the series. The storyline was very good and the gameplay was quite a bit of fun. It is such a shame that the game starts off fairly slow and is bogged down by finding fiddly little items to make any progress but once the momentum picks up the game became excellent. My apologies to the developer for such a bad review the first time around that was based more on my feeling about the previous games than it was on The New Order. If you are looking for a really good HOPA game with great HOPA scenes and good puzzles, please try the demo because you might enjoy this one.
At last, in a departure from this developer’s worn out series it has taken a giant leap into this awesome new game The Keeper of Antiquities. I love games from this developer and have always found them to be well-crafted and long, offering great gameplay and, if you choose the CE, lots of extra goodies. The graphics are very much like those in the familiar Witches’ Legacy and Fear for Sale series where the artists are terrific at creating dark fantasy worlds.
You play the game as Alexandra who’s Uncle Paul has disappeared and you are on a mission to find him. When you arrive at your uncle’s shop you stumble upon a book and find your uncle trapped within its pages. As you work to free your uncle you discover a much deeper and sinister meaning to the mystery and the nightmarish book that soon will trap you and a friend as well. Now you must not only save your uncle but others as well as yourself.
Your tools include a terrific, interactive map that not only shows you where you have tasks to accomplish but also where you might have available extra goodies to find. Your other tool is a fire salamander that will help when a little flame is needed.
The HOPS include a lot of those familiar windowed mini-HOPS where we must find a specified number of parts scattered around the scene to complete the needed item. The full-blown HOPS are excellent but I did find some items difficult to find as the scenes were a bit dark. A great thing with the HOPS is that they are very puzzle-like and contain mini-games to find some needed items. The mini-games are excellent and some are tricky to complete. I found most of the minis quite enjoyable, but I love solving puzzles so Keeper of Antiquities is perfect for me.
The CE version of the game is chock full of extra goodies. There are puzzle pieces to find as well as different sets of collectibles and morphing objects. I had a hard time spotting some of the morps so I am thankful the map lets me know where something might have been missed in a scene. Yes, I love CEs and I admit that I am almost compulsive about finding all of the extra goodies in a game. Along with all of those extras to find we have the usual standard extras such as the bonus game and strategy guide. Keeper of Antiquities is what every developer should look at when it comes to formulating an excellent package that is CE worthy.
Congratulations to this development team for stepping outside the box and giving us an exciting new game that will keep us thinking and entertained for hours. A lot of thought and creativity has gone into Keeper of Antiquities and I am enjoying each step as I save others from an eternal nightmare. Of course the game was an instant buy for me and one that I love but please try the demo to see if Keeper of Antiquities is a game you will enjoy.
You play the game as the daughter of the governor of an island in the West Indies who has finally come to visit your father after the passing of your mother. Unfortunately, you are kidnapped just as you arrive, separating you from your father and putting you into the perilous situation of walking the line between warring factions. There is the Pirate King, who rather resembles the fabled Blackbeard, and others who are bent on destroying him. Shortly after your capture you find an unlikely ally in the ship’s captain who helps you escape and starts you on your adventure.
The gameplay modes include the custom setting where you can select your hint and skip times as well as a few other options. The graphics are absolutely top-notch create the pirates’ island haven to perfection.
The HOS are familiar and what we normally see from this developer. In the demo I only saw one scene where we must find five each of two different items to open the list – a mechanism that has been quite overused. One HOP scene I really liked is where I had to find clothes so that I could camouflage myself as a pirate. Several of the HOS were multi-level and even though they are familiar were enjoyable. The mini-games were good as well and include finding symbols to open a box, place statues in the proper position by moving their limbs, find your way through the jungle by using a map, place weights to position a bridge, and others that are fairly simple. My favorite mini-game was a slider puzzle that requires removing the sliders in the correct order to open a path. All in all even though there were not any difficult mini-games I still found them fun to solve.
The CE version includes the following extras: 41 messages in a bottle, 6 chests, and 25 souvenirs to find after you complete the main and bonus games. Morphing objects can be found in the HOP scenes so keep your eyes open to see if you can spot them. Of course you can earn achievements as you play through the game. Other extras include the Strategy Guide, Replay of HOPS and Puzzles, Music, Video, Pictures, and a Souvenir Room. There is also a tribute video for the series that will highlight scenes from all Sea of Lies games.
The Sea of Lies series is not my favorite and I although I was rather ho-hum about this game in the beginning it did become much better and I was quite surprised. Leviathan Reef is the final game in the Sea of Lies series and at least it is sailing into the sunset with flair. In the end, I did quite enjoy the game and it was excellent. The mini-games were much better than usual and the HOPS were well-crafted. If you enjoy pirate games, then Leviathan Reef is a great 5-star game to add to your collection.
I recommend this game!

STOP THE ANCIENT SWAMP FEVER TO SAVE THE KINGDOM
PostedJune 4, 2016

fromI must find the healer at all cost to save the kingdom
Leaping frogs, the whole kingdom has been over taken by an ancient disease, swamp fever, that is turning everyone into those croaky, green amphibians. The day starts out as any other except it is special because it’s Princess Daniela’s birthday. Among her gifts she finds a butterfly pendant but she is puzzled because she doesn’t know who gave her such an exquisite gift. No sooner does Daniella place the pendant on her neck than disaster strikes the kingdom as the fever begins. Just before her mother is disabled by the fever, she implores Daniela to find the healer who dwells in the swamp as he is their only hope.
The graphics are gorgeous and create a sometimes beautiful fantasy world that is bright and colorful and at other times they are dark and gloomy. There is a custom mode where the hints and skips reset 10 – 120 seconds.
Your tools include an interactive, transporter type map and a special amulet that is among your birthday gifts. There is a journal that contains notes as well as objectives.
The HOPs are very well-crafted and clever with some being different than those we normally see. There is a nice balance with 27 HOPS and 27 mini-games as you play. Some of the mini-games are different and a bit challenging at least for me because they are the toggle type where one action affects other items and I am not at all fond of those. Fortunately there are other types of mini-games so there will be something for everyone.
The CE Version of the game includes: 12 Morphing Objects 19 Achievements Replay of 27 HOPS and 27 mini-games Bonus Chapter Strategy Guide Videos Music 18 posters 18 Concept Art
I hate to admit it but I do enjoy fantasy games and this one is quite good. I love finding frogs scattered throughout the scenes then realizing that they were once human members of the realm who have been affected by the swamp fever. I guess this princess is just going to have to work quite hard not only to save the family but to restore all of the frogs to their original state and save the kingdom as well. I actually think the storyline is quite creative and the game is very well-designed. I am sure many of you will love the beautiful graphics as you move from scene to scene. I knew after playing the beta for the game that this would be one I love and have to add to my gaming library. As always, I recommend that you try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy.
The game begins with a “smashing” taxi ride to Redemption Cemetery where you find yourself at Death’s Door. You discover there is a way out but that begins with releasing the Keeper of the Cemetery who was long ago imprisoned by, yes you guessed it, an evil spirit. Once you release the Keeper you are told that to return home you must help three spirits find peace, which is the theme of all games in this series. To help each spirit you must enter their past and find what is holding them from finding their eternal rest.
This game is from one of my favorite game devs who was the first one to get me interested in HOPA games years ago. I love their wonderful hand-drawn artwork that brings the characters such a sense of emotion and realism. The overall graphics are absolutely excellent and then couple that with a terrific sound package it creates the type of game that I love to play. The game also offers four modes of gameplay to select from that includes a custom mode so you can fiddle with the settings. However, there is one thing I dislike in the custom mode and that is the slider used to set the hint and skip times that are not independent of each other. Adjusting the hint to a lower setting will elevate the mini-game skip time, which is a feature I absolutely hate since I like my hint and skip times set the same and that is generally different than the times available.
Your only tool is an interactive map that is present at the beginning of the game. A refreshing change is that there is no gimmicky tool included.
The HOPS are varied and, yes, they are often visited more than once. Some examples include the story type where you must find the items listed in bold in each sentence. There is some interaction required to find items in this scene. Another scene is one where items are found by silhouette and this one also requires some interaction. Then there are the standard list type scenes as well. All in all I found that I really liked the HOPS in the game and found most items fairly easy to spot as well as the actions that would be needed to complete an item. The mini-games are excellent and most of them had a fairly decent level of challenge. There were several that I really enjoyed such as the one where we rotate circles and swap their pieces so the colors and patterns match. The only mini-game that was involved moving skeletal arms to open a door but then moving one arm moves the others. For some reason the Bunny includes this puzzle frequently in its games and the interaction is generally tougher to figure out than in similar puzzles from other devs. There is another mini-game that occurs when we open a portal to the life of a spirit who we are helping. I found the puzzle to be a fairly time-consuming so I did skip it in the demo but will take the time to solve it in the full game since I really liked this one.
Even though I did not care for the previous Redemption Cemetery game this one is quite good. Yes we are dealing with an evil being once again so there is nothing new here but I really enjoyed moving through each part of the game. At Death's Door seems a bit more difficult than some of the dev’s recent games and it is not always obvious what you need to find. I had to use the hint button a couple of times just to get going but once I found those elusive and important items the game opened up a bit. Even though I really like this game, please try the demo to see if At Death’s Door will be a game you will enjoy.
