I really didn't like the graphics on this 9th edition of Christmas Stories. When you compare them to the WOW graphics we used to have in CS A Christmas Carol these are so cartoonish. The turquois blue is used everywhere and there isn't enough shadowing to define objects in the scene which are already too busy. Some scenes were better than others.
It does have a jump map, which is nice, but it isn't all that helpful. It doesn't point out which areas you need to go to next because all 3 open areas say "come back later."
I loved the CG gnome. Whoever owns that task at Elephant really makes the game better with those little special effects; so well done.

BASED ON COMPLETED GAME (but not CE bonus play)
This game took me 4:40 hrs. (over 3 days) to complete the main game.
Right from the start it has the MCF feel and straight through to the end this one felt "worthy" of the MCF title. I loved how the characters looked so life-like and spoke from within the scene. This game has an amazing journal (as MCF should) and it is used to access clues.
There is an awesome MG in chapter 5 that is a tiny model of Huxley House where you place objects into their correct rooms. I also loved a HOS in this area (children's room) that is beautifully illustrated with Victorian toys.
The only thing I didn't like were the game effect sounds which made a clunk when making an incorrect choice. These gaming sounds couldn't be shut off without affecting the environmental sounds because they were on the same slider in options.
I gave this game 4* instead of 5* because this game is very MG heavy at the end. I prefer hidden object scenes to mini-games and would have preferred they used those instead.
A FUNNY QUOTE from the game that made me laugh..."She lost it completely. Pain & stress can do that. Finding her eyes may bring her some comfort." LOL, you think?
This game reminded me of a 2014 game called Tales of Terror: House on the Hill so I've added a link if you liked MCF Broken Hour and want to demo that one too.
I recommend this game!

A shout-out to the BFG members that have been here since 2010 & before. Remember the days.... those of you that played The 13th Skull and Dire Grove for the first time. Remember when BFG would offer mouse pads or MCF pins when you bought the CE version? I actually bought the CE on day one, back then (several times) and still have those mousepads (which I'm using right now).
Remember when we saw the live actors for the first time in the MCF series, the attention to the cutscenes, the awesome computer generated, crystal clear, ominous graphics that immersed you further into the incredible storylines? Remember when you were proud of yourself for completing a MG because you had to refer to the MCF JOURNAL to solve a problem? Remember the cutscenes? It was like solving a case inside a movie!
****Sigh***** :( Those were the days, though.
BFG, many of us are begging you to bring back the live actors, those graphics, and at the very least, for the MCF series that many people come to BFG site just to play the newest in this series.
MCF Harbinger....this game is not that.
I actually rate this 1* but I know how hard they must have tried to make this game and hate leaving bad reviews so I won't leave a 1* review anymore. I struggled getting through the entire demo for this game. I was bored to tears. I think my biggest problem was the childlike hand-drawn graphics (which I despise). This is a Mystery Case Files heading and it needs to be BETTER than the average HOPA.
The intro cutscene into Harbinger, I thought I may be playing a Dark Tales title. The cutsie, hand-drawn graphics were similar to those and immediately I thought it was produced by another DEV than Grandma. Those have their own place in their own series... but MCF should be atmospheric.
I couldn't believe the "super puzzles" here. They were just mini-multiple versions of the MG we see in all the dumbed down games except they were all in one spot.
I absolutely adore Grandma, and one of my very favorite games is produced by them. MCF just isn't their thing, imho. Possibly this game gets better after the demo and possibly they have changed some things in the newer MCF they put out. If so, I'm so sorry for the criticism of Harbinger and hope you understand it's meant to help you going on (along with the other reviews).
However, if I can't have the live actors of Dire Grove, 13th Skull and Shadow Lake then 2013's Fate's Carnival, is getting closer to the MCF I once adored.
I don't recommend this game but Grandma made one of my favorite games of all time that has ***the most incredible HOS*** I have ever played, called Whispered Secrets: Everburning Candle. Tap the link and try that demo if you haven’t already!
I don't recommend this game.

This is one of those games that has multiple hidden object scenes like the Vacation Adventures Park Ranger series. It also has some fun mini games in between the HOS. There all all types of HOS too.
I didn't have any of the technical issues a lot of the other reviewers had. I use a Windows 7 gaming computer and everything worked as it should.
WHAT I LIKED:
~I loved the graphics in this game. I wish all the current DEV used crystal clear, defined graphics like this.
~I really loved how a portion of each scene is animated (like being able to look out the scenes window to see moving traffic outside). The new one that came out yesterday, FA: The Forbidden Crypt doesn't have this detail (at least in the demo). I really notice details that take more time to make a game better. I liked this game's demo better than the newest one.
This is pretty funny. By chapter 4 I came to a HOP where they give you descriptive words to find the item. The words were "wire clamper". I had no idea what that meant and hit the hint key and it gives me a second one...."shoots fasteners". Guess what this item was?
A stapler. LOL
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
~ The sound that repeats every hidden object you find. After playing a HOP only game for any amount of time this gets REALLY annoying. The one used in this game is an especially loud ding.
~ There is just way too much dialog to click through. IT CAN BE SKIPPED (which is great) but DEV, maybe change that feature to a different way of getting the story across. I see the majority of the other reviewers are alerting you this needs to be changed to perfect this game series.
~ I found the chapter breakdown confusing. You really have no idea where you are in the game or in the chapter for that matter. The scenes had numbers on them in the chapter title screen but they were random numbers so I wasn't sure what scene I was supposed to go to next.
I'm so sorry to nitpick this game because I did really like it and I am going to buy it but I did notice this game has lower ratings than other games of it's type. I played all of the demos to this series back to back and I noticed the same exact complaints by reviewers under all of this series titles including the newest version. I really think it would help the DEV if they read all the reviews under these FA games in order to make a few teeny changes that I bet would make this game series go from a 3* star rating to a 5*star rating going forward. I've noticed most people adore this type of game.
I recommend this game!

I loved the story in this game. If you liked this game try
Paranormal Pursuit: The Gifted One and
Veronica Weaver: Catch Me if You Can
All of the Hops are basic list type. The minigames are all game related type which I loved.
It has a basic diary. This game had such a great storyline I wish the diary held more of it than it did.
There is a great "memories" hop at the end.
The entire game takes place at night and in the cold snow.
I loved this game and highly recommend.

BASED ON COMPLETED GAME (but not CE bonus chapter)
On the game page for this game there is a "Blog Walkthrough Guide" link. I kept it open in a background window and would hit the windows button (next to alt) to get back and forth while this game was open in the main window.
It took me 4:03 hrs (over 3 days) to finish this game. I played most of the MG but skipped them if I was too frustrated. For the most part I turned to the walkthrough guide if I got stuck on the puzzles.
I purchased the SE to this game in 2010. This is not an easy game; there is no hand-holding. I LOVED it. I don't think I'd always love a game this tough, but it was so much fun as a change. Many times over the years I would start and stop this game because I would either get stuck or the computer I was on wouldn't allow me to play it. I used Windows 7 this time- on a gaming computer and it still bounced me out a couple of times but I still managed to reboot and make it to the end.
I went in to this knowing they just released the new game "Redrawn" and decided I would try to play it without a walkthrough guide as much as possible. I can't wait to play Redrawn now. The hint system here DOES help and it makes you think. I think it took me all these years of practicing with other games to actually complete this one.
Everything about this game makes you think. It is sort of an IQ tester as well as a memory tester all in one.
The graphics and special effects are just spot on. The music is gorgeous. The voice overs are perfect. The story is interesting. One of the characters is not really "saved" so I wonder if the other Drawn games that come after this helps this character. That was my only gripe with it. Thankfully I own the other Drawn games too so I'll continue on those.
I recently tried another old game I own, released 11-14-11, that reminds me of this game a little bit.
It's called: Nightmare Realm (in favorites link)
Be sure to finish watching the credits to this game because they show some of the game's concept art.
Thank you to all of you that worked on this beautiful game. You must be so proud of yourselves!
I recommend this game!

BASED ON COMPLETED MAIN GAME (and CE bonus play)
This is now in my top 3 HOPA Halloween games.
See the top slot, 5 star reviews on the CE version page for this game. I thought Skullfun and HeavenBound7729 have already done perfect reviews for this game. I just wanted to add a couple of thoughts.
The main game took me: 4:09 hrs
CE bonus play (if you are on the fence to get that version) took me 1:47 hrs
Total Play with bonus took me just shy of 6 hrs (@ 5:56 hr)
I loved this long game from beginning to end. I found it was cheering me up every time I was playing it and wanted to get back to it when I had to do other things.
The bonus play for the CE addition was also long and had 10 ALL NEW SCENES.
My favorite thing about this game, other then the intro cut scene, were all the items that you can interact with when clicked on. I call them "reactive items". I had more fun looking for these items then the morphs that were in the CE addition.
EVERY scene in this game, right through CE bonus play, had a "reactive item" to find. I think my favorite was in the demo.... so when you get to the (2nd or 3rd) scene with the little boy, CLICK THE SNEAKERS! Just so clever and you don't want to miss it!
I kept clicking the one in the area called "Cave" in chapter 3. CLICK THE MOON. Another favorite was in Chapter 4 "Girl's Room" CLICK THE PAINTING on the right wall. I loved so many of them I'd be here all day.
These items are just so fun so be sure to click EVERYTHING in the scene so you don't miss any.
The scenes that didn't have the actual reactive items had other special effects or characters, such as a little french bulldog in the area called Rosetta's House. I have mini~bulldogs so I was thrilled with that little dog. Another scene further on had 2 grumpy old vampires that were hilarious to click on.
I adored every second of this long game. I highly recommend the CE version to it.
Side note to the other reviewers: I read these reviews every day and look for your game suggestions. A lot of us are missing the older games lately. Can you add your favorites under the "favorite games" link in your reviews? Thank you!

BASED ON COMPLETED MAIN GAME
I think my end rating on this would be 3.8 stars.
It took me 3:05 hrs to finish this game. I completed a lot of the mini games (which were really good in this one). I am more of a HOP fan and usually skip a lot of the MG but took the time with the ones in this game.
I absolutely loved the special effects (mostly in the demo) and how scary some of them looked. The main baddie in this game is a hooded skeleton that looks like a Scooby Doo monster. It would have been cool to see a more realistic rendering for a baddie here, I think.
Most of this game is spent in an alternate reality that is dirty and dilapidated. There isn't as much "Halloween theme" here as much as a spooky focus.
That's fine too because I like both themed games and horror games.
The "black book" in this game is a dark magic ritual book. I really wasn't thrilled with the storyline. I may be more sensitive to this subject matter though because I'm an energy/spiritual healer in real life, so maybe it's just me.
I didn't like some of the items that were on the tables etc. that would be considered ritualistic and ultimately it's why I didn't buy the CE version in 2018. When I replayed the demo of the SE in 2021 I decided to buy the game and finish it. I did end up liking the main game & I'm glad I played it through, but I didn't miss the bonus chapter here.
I'm mentioning this because over the years, I've read several other reviewers not liking the games that have storylines with dark magic or ritualistic stuff. It's not over the top here but enough to mention it.
My favorite game in this series is still Halloween Stories: Horror Movie. I highly recommend the CE to that one.
I recommend this game!
