I enjoyed playing this chain M3 -- especially like all the different directions you can take to create lengthy chains that cause explosions and other tile zapping effects. I agree with a couple of other reviewers that if you enjoyed playing the 4 Elements games you'll probably like this one, too. I've been waiting for something to interest me enough to use a coupon that expires tomorrow and am glad this one came out in the nick of time.
I haven't played the previous Dig The Ground games so all was new to me but I didn't find I needed more instruction to quickly get the hang of it. This game is easy enough for everyone to play relaxed- take as long as you want/make as many moves as you want but also provides challenge for when you wish to bring more strategy into the game and finish the boards more quickly, in fewer moves.
I did suffer a bit of an unresponsive mouse problem in the last level I played and am a bit wary as far as that goes, hope it was just a glitch in that one level (could be I need a new battery in it already, better check that out!).
The storyline may be silly (I think so) which is fine with me because that's not a priority unless I'm playing an adventure game. The clutter-style hidden object scenes are good, relaxing fun and there's a variety of other style minigames that you can play or not within each level -- a matching pairs, match 3 and connect pipes one. If the previous game in this series is anything to go by, they increase in difficulty as you progress which is nice for those times when you're craving some challenge. I even liked using my earned stars to improve my "Mind Fortress" or whatever that silly storyline called it -- looks like a room in an old castle. You collect jigsaw puzzle pieces when you purchase those fortress upgrades which you use to complete a small puzzle at the end of each level (10 or 11 gameboards per level incl the minigames one).
I'll certainly be purchasing this one. I know I'll get hours of entertainment from it; it's one of those games you can play through to the finish (or not) and then pick up down the road now and then to play a few levels whenever the urge hits you.
Based on demo play, this is the best Clutter game yet in my opinion. I had a blast; lots of fun and lots of options so you can play the way you want to play. Not as confusing to navigate as one or two of the recent games were for me at first so we can just concentrate on enjoying the wonderful variety of great puzzles (and so many of them, excellent value!) Joe's put together for us this time.
I certainly can't remember game board layouts from one game to the next so can't contribute anything to that discussion; my memory's just not that good I guess. I don't own any of the previous Chronicles games either. But, I did recognize several elements this game has in common with one I did play some years ago, Fruit Lockers Reborn.
If I recall correctly, Fruit Lockers got progressively more challenging -- very rare that a new M3 game does that anymore (but I keep hoping!). I don't think this will turn out to be one of them - based on my experience playing only the demo - but who knows? Hopefully someone who plays the entire game will soon review. I wasn't bored, found the story to be better/more interesting than most others (but that's about the last of my concerns re Match 3 games). I didn't care when the demo ended either, no urge to rush back here to purchase. I'd use a coupon on it though, or choose it as my 2nd game during a BOGO sale, in the faint hope that it does get more challenging. Otherwise I'll probably quit playing before I finish the game, bored of it like most of the other M3s I've purchased in recent years.
After 3 or 4 levels I thought this game was going to be pitifully easy, for the kiddies, but then I was pleasantly surprised. Level of challenge is no more or less than any of the popular M3 series offered here - and the cute, clear icons are all Christmas themed. Music is relaxing, gameplay is nice and smooth, no waiting for tiles to finish dropping before making another match, plentiful bonuses to explode and hazards to use them on. You earn points to purchase holiday decorations with -- Santa's on vacation (at this time of year?!?) and you're decorating his living room while he's away.
I was enjoying myself, feeling all Christmasy, so was disappointed when the demo ended. So nice to play after another hectic day getting ready for the big holiday. I recommend you give the demo a try and see if Santa's Holiday makes you feel as "jolly" as did me :-)
Nice change from the usual with the addition of -- believe it or not -- fun and challenging puzzle games after every few mosaic puzzles completed. The mosaics also offer enough challenge to entertain both those new to this type of game and seasoned players (you can choose easy or hard level of difficulty).
before reviewing. 2 1/2 stars. I can't believe it's come to this! Every year, I eagerly await the new game in the series and give it a glowing review. This time, 10th Anniversary no less, I'm feeling more disappointed than anything else.
You'd think the developers would've put a little bit more effort into it -- other than most scenes looking more cluttered than usual, I felt like I was replaying any earlier version, right down to the same old music and what are by today's standards, poorly drawn family characters. That's why only 2 stars for visual/sound this time -- an update is long overdue and wouldn't take much effort on your part.
If you're a diehard fan, there's little reason to pay twice as much for the CE version, none other than the 9 extra HO scenes, in my opinion. As a diehard fan myself (except I felt like I was dying of boredom when I played this one) I'll give only the standard version a recommendation.
It's not very often we see a new Match 3 game offered that has any challenge to it, requires at least a bit of strategic thinking. For instance, when one of those dart-throwing (from their mouths!) guys is on top of another and you're trying to set up a match in front of the bottom one, you need to be careful not to trigger the top one -- the dart-throwers don't disappear after their particular job is completed. Icons are easy to see/differentiate from each other, game play is smooth and you can make quick matches which is a must for me. You can play timeless (relaxed) and timed or limited moves for even more challenge. The occasional mini-game is a welcome change from just matching board after board, too. I accidentally declined help at the beginning of the 2nd gameboard so had to figure out how to use bonuses and get rid of obstacles without it. I don't recommend doing that so early on (this is not the usual cookie-cutter M3) but I did manage just fine for the rest of the demo. If you're also a fan of M3 games, I recommend you give this one a try. It's a buy for me.
I love a good M3 game and the Cursed House series is one of the few favourites I enjoy playing more than once. This one, with new challenges (yay!) described in previous reviews, is great fun to play. No long-winded stories interrupting my M3 play, smooth matching, an easy minigame every 5 or so levels for a pleasant break. Love having the ability to choose level of challenge to suit whatever mood I'm in. Definite purchase for me!
