This is one of the games with the awful interface that takes up a third of the screen (ghost dogs of moon lake has it, curse of blackmoor) and it annoys me intently as I feel I am playing this through a viewfinder, I am not immersed in it. It’s not one of the better ones but I still enjoyed it.
It wasn’t difficult, some ND puzzles usually is hair pulling but these were straightforward though like all ND games you have to think with some. Also I do wish the journal would record everything that I need for some mini games, and I didn’t need to write things down but that is the same for all of ND games that I have played. It’s also the only ND game I have played that didn’t have a theme running through it, learning about a subject. You also don't have to go to bed or have a clock (have to do things at a certain time etc) throughout the game so that side of it was great.
Even though it’s not ND first game you may think it is by the story – 1920s young Nancy trying her hand at her first case. You have to drive around town a lot, and earn money for gas money this can get tedious.
Puzzles – -Miniature golf – this was fun -guess what colour is in each spot – gives flags if right colour in wrong place etc -slider puzzle, and a gears puzzle -same colour piece to go on corresponding colour tile on a board - a few decipher riddles, logic test (one of those was an old fashioned expression I hadn’t heard) - rotate tiles and place them in correct pattern to make a photo -place nuts and bolts in their corresponding correct size drawer -a variation on the old mentalist trick of ‘guess what I have’ by how I say something – this was random so you work it out by process of elimination There are a few others.
Pros – -variety of puzzles -great plot
Cons – -Interface taking up too much room -Slightly too much dialogue, I can read faster than they speak so would love a skip button. I could then follow the plot without wasting time. -In options I chose not to listen to the music and not to have subtitles. It didn’t work I had both, and nothing seemed to change it.
Nancy drew games I have played and the order I enjoyed them:
1)White wolf of icicle creek 2) Trail of the twister (although shorter and less variety than others) 3) Legend of the crystal skull 4)Secret of the old clock (I like puzzles and there was more variety than other games) 5) Ghost dogs of moon lake (although the graphics and adventure side was better) 5) Danger deception island 6) Message in a haunted mansion (must retry it with walkthrough as missed vital thing early on and just frustrated me so not that far through it)
Overall a solid B purely on plot and I like the puzzles. It's a good one to start on. If you click on the journal and then on the icon beside it you get a hint by a to do list, if you play on junior level.
(Although I play a lot of LF games I still think ND games are so different so view myself intermediate, gave myself a promotion with this game!)
BLAM made this game. It seems they usually do TM games and this is their first HOPA. Which makes this game even more remarkable.
This game was so near to getting an ‘A’ rating from me which is rare and how irritating it is that I can’t give it! I do not have a widescreen laptop and yet I still got black side bars. About the only modern HOPA game that has done this, I thought that was absolute and a minimum for a modern game to have no black bars! (and I do have my nvidia panel set to stretch games and tried everything!)
Leaving that aside the hidden object scenes (bar two junk scenes – why did they have to be there?) were the best hidden object scenes that I can remember in a game and not very easy. They were the best integrated in a scene, and mostly not junk pile. (Although they had the usual random click penalty which is annoying.)
The puzzles were for once in a game a nice hardness for a HOPA, enough to be challenging and take your time over. It was well done the adventure interactions, and all the graphics were really sharp and didn’t have that awful soft wash on them which I hate in some games.
The plot was standard fare but didn’t interrupt too much which was good but when it did it really was excellently done – nice mild sacredness factor. I like it when I can ignore the novel/diary and it doesn’t glow as I don’t need updates.
There was a choice of 3 settings and in the bonus!
I played no sparkles, don't skip puzzles (but like the choice to do so) and it was a good length. I’m not a very fast player.
I must point out that for the first time in any HOPA game (even escape from ravenhearst - latest MCF game I had none!) I had a few tech problems. My whole computer shut down in the middle of the game a few times and most of the time when I was trying to get out of a scene my whole screen went black for a few seconds (not the skull and diary), that never happens. It did remember where I was. So would urge the new DEVS to try and not make a game as much of a hog (sorry about the pun!) next time. (yes I am full updated)
SE - 5 hrs +. bonus has 2 chapters – 1 hr 40 mins (roughly)
BONUS -
pro -
- choice of difficulty, sadly this is quite rare in other games - 2 chapters - long bonus - don't play any scenes (apart from first scene) in the main SE game so it's all new the whole bonus
cons - the hidden object scenes were nowhere near as well done as the main game - more frequent H O scenes
If I could have had this game play full screen for me, I'd give it a higher mark and 5 stars for graphics.
As is, a very good B+ game for having mostly excellent hidden object scenes and not super easy puzzles.
I recommend this game!

worth a look if you love hidden object scenes for a daily deal
When I first started playing this, I was all excited - an option to play with harder puzzles (and also harder to find hidden object scenes with no outline hint option)! The graphics were great and everything was going well.
Some hidden object scenes were well done then it just seemed like there was one hidden object scene after another and some were pure junk piles, when the demo hour was over. And the puzzles were few and far between to take advantage of that excellent addition of harder option.
Checking against the walkthrough after demo hour was up (to help judge length of game) I was over half way through. But don’t let that put you off buying it as I did have a couple of hours longer. So in all it was about 3hrs on hard. It is shorter than other games. There is an option for story at the end but there isn’t a right or wrong answer.
The variety of settings of scenes/areas you are in is quite small for a game. But they are well done. The hint button is helpful (tells you what you should do next). If you like a lot of hidden object scenes and have a spare coupon or it’s a daily deal (I got it as a DD) you may like it. But I wouldn’t go expecting an A calibre HOPA as this isn’t it. It’s a laid back, small feeling, quaint easier game.
If you like a lot of hidden object scenes then I’d give it a C+ if you are expecting a normal HOPA I’d give it a pass!
It’s like saying here is a chocolate bar and you look forward to and expect chocolate only to find out it’s a granola bar. It may be a really good granola bar but it’s still not chocolate! I was expecting azada and I didn’t get it. I wanted my chocolate!!
Putting my great disappointment at BF for farming this game out and mourning a loss of a truly great franchise; this game is very good. I really enjoyed it.
Pros and cons - Pros - -No sparkles in my setting - one or two harder puzzles (the bugs in the globe game) -Different environments - from fairytale to literally hades - Backtracking was contained compared to other games - although not truly unique puzzles, I felt ERS did try and at least put a different face/dressed it up a bit
Cons - -some puzzles, like the one with different coloured gems and you had to move them into their coloured slots in the middle of the board (one where you used the brush to activate it) could easily have made from a really easy puzzle to a easy puzzle by making the arrows move the tile the complete direction and not square by square.
- Needed more and harder (or at least a harder option) puzzles as the first two azada games were just one puzzle after the another and some were hard.
I admire ERS for pushing things a bit, no hidden object scenes or junk pile scenes which is their comfort zone (and I don’t like) and trying. If they ratcheted up the puzzles and the hardness of them and not call this azada I’d give it an A. But too many easier puzzles and not enough of them makes it an A-.
It is a bit shorter than their other games but not super short. Obviously I'd love an hour longer gameplay but much prefer this quality over their standard longer HOPA with junk pile hidden object scenes games.
It’s the best nancy drew game I have played (apart from the dossier series). You go undercover as a cook and maid at a small ski lodge to uncover the sabotage and strange things that have been happening.
There is a clock in this game but unlike the haunted mansion where I missed out on vital thing, it didn’t happen here. I play on junior level. It was straightforward what to do and when and who to speak to and as everyone was in the lodge it’s easy to speak to everyone and you don’t have to spend ages backtracking to find out if anyone has anything new to say!
You don’t have a cell phone but you use the hotel phone, so no Bess and Hardy boys to call. It’s cold up in Canada so you can only stay out in the cold weather for a certain amount of time but it’s plenty if you only do one thing at a time outside. Usually in ND games you learn something about a subject, here it was about wolves, especially one and that part was good.
The puzzles were a mixture of arcade, thinking, and TM style. Arcade – 1d, style avoid obstacles while on snowmobile*, and a variation of whack a mole (snowball fight) Re snowmobile, it would have been good if it could have been first person view on the snowmobile, scenery like it was outside.
TM style– food. I waited at the kitchen for the right time and always managed to get all meals done before end of service and I am not good at TM games. So don’t know what happens if you don’t complete or run over time. I missed 2 meals by being outside but nothing happened (don’t know if it affected my end score). I loved this part but some of the food looked yuck like the salad, I guess you are not a good cook!
There was also a tight timed pipe puzzle game but discovered by a tip you can play this untimed (click rapidly on door till Nancy says something, but you don’t go into second chance so have time to do puzzle).
Maid duty, I didn’t make many beds during game, (just required one click) but you take away the towels, that’s about it! But as you are snooping around the rooms anyway it all works out.
I loved the fox and geese game but it is quite hard so if you don’t like it don’t play it till the end. There is an involved cipher but you can look for a walkthrough to skip that. There are some smaller puzzles scattered throughout.
I love this game as it’s contained re talking and ND games always has a fair amount of talking in them. And the variety of puzzles was a lot better than trail of the twister, and it was mostly straightforward with what you had to do next. Here is a list of ND games I have played in order of my personal enjoyment/rating. And so you know what I am comparing them to.
1) White wolf of icicle creek 2) Trail of the twister (although shorter and less variety than others) 3) Legend of the crystal skull 4) Ghost dogs of moon lake 5) Danger deception island 6) Message in a haunted mansion (must retry it with walkthrough as missed vital thing early on and just frustrated me so not that far through it)
I am an experienced LF adventure player but as ND games are so different still think I am a beginner maybe moving up next game to intermediate! I always play hard in other games but still with ND am playing on junior level so if you are a beginner I’d advise that. It’s quite a good game to start with as everything is contained.
I hope you enjoy it, I know I did!
*Tip – snowmobile at end. I thought there was a bug as I was at that for 20 mins a time (real time) and couldn’t get it to finish. I followed a tip here on the game forum which worked -on keeping the cursor on the snowmobile you are chasing so it keeps you up with it, not crashing in to anything and you in the same screen which you need to be for about 5 mins of game time and it ended quite quickly.
This ended up being a really good game. I groaned when I saw no options for difficulty and had sparkles. But I liked the atmosphere not eerie but slightly haunting. It’s the puzzles that make this game stand out. There aren’t loads but the ones they do have some are really unique.
And I felt the ratio of hidden object scenes were OK, not too many but enough to keep those that like them satisfied. I also like games with the majority of scenes being in a house. It ended up being a good length as I thought finishing the demo it would be short. Plot was a bit obvious but good and didn’t interrupt gameplay that often like so many games do.
Pros -Truly unique puzzles -Some quite hard puzzles -Helpful hint button which told you if there was anything you could do in an area and showed you the arrow buttons if there wasn’t WITHOUT using up the hint button and having to wait -No penalty for random clicking in hidden object scenes, so rare but makes such a wonderful difference!
Cons -Hidden object scenes weren’t to my taste, either in the junk pile realm and or some quite hard to find -No option of hardness so had to have sparkles -Fair amount of backtracking but probably average for a HOPA (still would have liked the shortcut appear earlier in a game) or have a transporter map to at least outside major areas.
I love puzzles - this kind. I love weird, quirky, different, adventure, puzzle games that give me a change from all the meatier games. It definitely will only appeal to a very narrow set of people.
At the beginning it's so easy but it gets progressively harder. When, at the 2nd or 3rd level I didn't do things in the right order the first time, I then knew it wasn't just a kids game. And when you get into the latter levels you know it's not a kids game at all!
I don't know if I would say it was a logic game as some things you have to do you would never guess the 1st time. I thought it would be short as I was getting through it fairly quickly and there are only 15 levels. But at level 12 it is timed (and also thankfully doesn't have the click and pull of scenes to get to the next scene which I agree is annoying) and I was at level 12 for ages.
It's hard to say how long it took as it is a game you can pick up and play for a level or 15 mins at at time which is great! I know it took me over 5hrs and could easily be 6hrs.
If you like hapland (way before tiny bang) then this game is definitely worth a look. I like how the game is laughing at itself with the graphics, it's supposed to be that way. I guess it's how you look at it, you either get it or you don't. And you realise for some of the puzzles to work it had to have the look of cardboard cut outs/pop up childrens' book.
You can earn hints by collecting coins.
This game is the perfect example of why it's good to have the whole hour demo, as if you spend the whole hour on it, you may end up getting it. Don't give up after a short time. I stopped and got it at 25 mins into it (when I had been at that 'male chicken' as well for ages, I knew I had to get it, if it could stump me).
If you only try it for 10 mins then you won't get it, you will be confused at how the graphics look and how simple it is for the first couple of levels.
This is a unique and different game, you play as a man who has lost his memory and doesn't know why he is in the middle of a jungle and he is trying to get back to his wife and child. It is part of a trilogy so don't go expecting a 100% tied up storyline or you will be disappointed. It's also not a standard hidden object puzzle adventure so if you are looking for that then pass on this. You have the option of playing this in 360 or using arrows, this is good as it immerses you more into the game and you have to remember to look up as well as down. The puzzles are challenging but not too hard. There is an option in the trilogy to play puzzles in an easier or hard mode - I love this and wish more developers would do this. This has the feel of tomb raider/indiana jones. The whole game is set in this 'jungle' so don't expect different scenery.
The hidden object scenes isn't what you are used to but more find 15 same items, or find related pairs and there aren't that many of them. This is a game for puzzle adventure fans. At the beginning you will find you think you can do something but realise you need to accomplish something else first so you have to go and find that first. You explore a lot at the beginning to get a feel of the layout and where things are (it does open to more areas later).
If you are looking for something different, a good storyline, nice puzzles (if not that original) then do try this.
About the other games in the series -
The 2nd game in the series is set in a very modern, office type setting and didn't like it as much. This game is the best in the series and then the 3rd and then the 2nd game (in that order). I played all of them as I wanted to know how the story ends!
ERS knows their formula and have stuck with it. That is a positive and negative thing for them. While this game is good the formulaic style leaves me a bit bored, I know what to expect and I get nothing new or exciting. But that is ERS for you- you know what you are going to get. Which is why I don't give any of their games an A as you have to do something out of the ordinary and push yourself to do an exceptional game instead of giving us a good solid B game.
pros - collecting roses nice touch for a SE and if you get all the roses makes the game plot at the very end slightly better - romantic plot - couple of medium puzzles, they usually have all easy puzzles -no sparkles on my setting
cons - - I just don't like their washed out graphics which they love - A bit glitchy - sometimes the 'eye' wouldn't pick up on a HO scene and had to be very accurate on a non accurate area (ie at end there was a big expanse of grass for a HO scene but if you didn't hover over it in the exact spot you wouldn't know there was one) - Also had to exit the game to get one of the puzzles working - The junk pile hidden object scenes - all of their scenes were this way. While a couple of items in it is interactive most other DEVS are at least doing a few non junk pile HO scenes as well as being interactive (ie doing something in a scene to reveal an item) - puzzles are always on the easy side with ERS they need some more that are a challenge. If I pick a harder setting to play then the puzzle should be harder as well. - opening with broken down mode of transport (and there have been a few carriages in games) it just gets old and a bit predictable and boring
As no one has mentioned it yet in these reviews I felt I had to warn some people. The plot of this is about child abuse, and from the child perspective a lot of the time. Personally I don't find games about this subject matter fun or something I wish to play in a game.
I don't mind dark or eerie things at all but child abuse, just don't get it (either in real life or as a choice of game). As ever it's a personal preference but stating mine.
Apart from the plot, this game is just old, the puzzles are repititive and really boring. I think they chose a 'dark' storyline to try and give a really boring bad game some edge - to try and win players that like warnings about it being for mature audiences.
So my bad rating for this game isn't just for the plot but for repititive bad puzzles and a boring game.
