This is based on the demo....
This game is supposed to be creepy and Poe-like so is mostly dark. But the darkness of the screen doesn't keep the player from seeing objects. You are also able to select the custom mode which allows the player to change the hint recharge time as well as the skip time.
The HOPs are very easy with none of the objects really hidden. A couple of the puzzles were a tad difficult (for me, and I love puzzles) but some were very easy. A couple were the ones where selecting one object changes another object. There is a method to that so you just have to pay attention to it. The one where you had to change the entire board into the blue color was one that stumped me for a bit. :-(
The demo ends in a way that I didn't see coming. I'd like to see how it goes so will probably buy this one.
Play the demo to see if you fall in the group that hates this or the ones that think it's not bad.

This review is based on the demo:
As others have said, I too am not sure why some have given this game such low ratings. I've read them and most seem to be based on the storyline which I personally thought was imaginative and completely different from the "European, horse/carriage riding, go meet the Queen/King/Nobility" or any of the other monster or detective stories that seem to be all the rage.
The minigames are not that difficult. The HOPs are different but again not difficult. The demo ended at a place that makes me wonder what comes next so I'll be buying this to see.
As always, play the demo first to see if this is your cup o' tea.

Where to start? The Collins character is SO ANNOYING!!! I think he's supposed to be funny/witty/charming but I think MHG missed the mark with this one. Instead of using the boards to go over the pit, MHG should have had them used to smack him in the head and take him out for the rest of the game. I might have reconsidered my review.
And then there are the puzzles which are either so easy or nonsensical. On a puzzle where you are to match the word with a picture, at least make the picture look like the word. Otherwise, all one can do is click all of the pictures. Same thing with the hidden objects. Some are right out front but a couple are made to look nothing like the object to be found. Keep your hint charged.
And what were they thinking with the tool kit in the bottom corner. What is that supposed to be for? It lights up and jumps around when you are in need of one of the tools to complete a task. Just put the tools in the toolbar and be done with the tool bag. Lost opportunity there, guys.
It was a chore to complete the demo and am very glad that I did the demo and didn't buy this outright. Please play the demo before buying as this might not be your cup of tea. Others seem to like this but I'll be passing.

Another reviewer said that this game starts out slowly but I didn't think a game could actually start this slow. Wow!
The game is VERY easy, very slow, and very predictable. And why do all of the characters have to sway? Do you sway when you talk? Geez, let them stand still!
Play the demo and see for yourself. I'm glad I did and saved myself some money.

This game started a little slow for me but after about 15 minutes or so, I was hooked (so if you're playing the demo, keep going). The setting is a house that you and your spouse have decided to "flip" but HEY, it's haunted. The graphics are pretty gray and dreary but they fit the mood perfectly. The HOPs are a little different and not all are the typical find the object ones. The puzzles are not terribly difficult so you should not have to skip any to keep the game going. I have to admit I jumped when the "thing" came out of the basement shoot. Holy cow Batman!! Creepy for sure. Enjoy but keep the lights on.

I have to wonder how players have given this game 5 stars when I can't even figure out what to do. There are no instructions. I found the map and all it had was areas with one or two leaves. Selecting one of the areas just popped up the location where the leaves were and did not transport you there. Here's a hint for those of you trying this out. Hitting "m" on your keyboard takes you to the Menu (which is still useless). Selecting ESC on your keyboard gives you the chance to exit the game. You will make use of the ESC for sure. Terrible!!!

Others have given an overview of the story so I'm not going to go into it again. I'll just say that the story is good. But the game itself is VERY short (as in VERY short) and was not in the least challenging. The puzzles were so easy and the HOPs were just obvious. When objects were found, you either used them in the same location or the one just prior or just afterwards. There was no collecting objects and wondering where in the world they were to be used. This is the second time I've played one of the games in this series but I think I'll pass on the other ones. :-(
If you are a new player, don't like long games, or just like to while away an afternoon, this one might be for you.
Play the demo first (I did not which was a mistake) as the first part of the game is the same as the rest.
I don't recommend this game.

It took me a while to get to this series but I am glad I did. This particular game was a great purchase. It was perfect as far as the level of challenge (I LOVE puzzles) and is one of the longest games I have played in a while. There is quite a bit of back and forth but the map is helpful for that. I'm not usually interested in the story lines as they are typically lame but this one is pretty interesting. I'd recommend this one for sure!

This review is based only on the demo. It is possible that the game picks up a bit in the later scenes, but based on the demo, I am never going to find out.
The story is OK - a whodunit type story. You have to find the clues and take them back to the lab to analyze them. The only challenge was in getting the facial features correct from a picture. ZZZZZ...
The hidden objects were very easy to find. There was absolutely no challenge.
This just didn't do it for me but I'd suggest the demo to see if it's your style of a game. Happy gaming!

As always, I won't review the storyline as that isn't a make or break for me. Suffice it to say that it's good. :-) The number of characters is perfect. A lot of times, these games add character after character and does more to confuse than to add to the story. This isn't one of them.
The puzzles are really great. This is why I play these games. If they are too easy, it's boring. If they're too hard, it's no fun either. These are just right. Some are a a tad difficult but doable. No cheats or skips are needed. The HOPs are not just the hunt and peck but are varied with finding objects, putting objects in their place, and then solving puzzles with the found objects.
The map is very useful as there are a lot of regions that get opened up.
